The main objective of this paper is to identify how imports and exports influence the economic performance of countries in the Black Sea region. The choice of countries takes into account a common feature of them considering the direct access to maritime transport whose potential for increasing foreign trade and stimulating economic growth is being investigated. The results of the study highlight the fact that this type of influence may or may not be significant depending on the level of economic development of the analyzed state while the common advantage of the geographical position does not generate the same type of effects for all states.

In the article a controversial judgment of the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice is discussed, passed in the case of S.A.S. v. France of 1 July 2014, where the areligious French ban against face covering in public space was considered — with reference to protecting the value of living together — consistent with the European for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR). Especially important in the case are both legal circumstances accompanying the introduction of the controversial ban and arguments included in the statement of reasons of the analyzed judgment, particularly doubts related to applying univocal judicial techniques and a comprehensible axiological system of weighing opposite interests.

The research presented in this paper is based on analysis of the Facebook posts of five major Hungarian political parties over the course of the official campaign season leading up to the 2018 parliamentary elections. We conducted a mixed-method analysis on 795 Facebook posts. First, the main topics of the parties were collected. Second, the posts of the parties were analyzed from a populist communicational perspective. Third, we tried to find some correlations between the basic topics and the populist communicational categories. Finally, we outline possible differences and similarities between parties’ communication. Our analysis shows that opposition parties did not have a common communicational strategy on Facebook while ruling parties emphasized both inner and exterior threats that could destabilize Hungary.

Televised political advertising appears in very different national political communication contexts. Sweden is an interesting case study. For many years, political ads on TV were not allowed at all. However, with the transition from analog to digital terrestrial television the public service obligations of the “hybrid” channel TV4 were dismantled. In the 2010 national election campaign, all Swedish parliamentary parties bought advertising time on TV4. This article intends to shed new light on political TV ads as a new campaign feature in a rapidly transforming political communication environment. The study relates to the concept of hybridization of election campaigns and intends to increase knowledge about hybridization processes by focusing on a critical case where one of the most adopted campaign practices worldwide is finally implemented within a specific national context and deviating political culture.

This article is a qualitative investigation of the mechanisms of reproduction of national identity narratives through digital media practices of hybrid populations in a conflict context using the example of Ukraine after the outbreak of the conflict with Russia. The article is based on a collection of 14 in-depth interviews with Russian-speaking Ukrainians from various regions. The findings point to several conclusions: first, hybrid/heterogeneous media practices are not always accompanied by high engagement. However, diverse heterogeneous and non-diverse homogeneous practices characterized by high engagement produced opposing narratives of national identity in the post-change Ukraine: a nation-centered interpretation of national identity homogeneous versus a universalistic post-national interpretation heterogeneous.

Ethnic affiliation is an important factor in family and reproductive behaviour and it also has an important role in assortative mating. The historical presence of numerous ethnic groups, especially of Hungarian and Roma background in certain regions of Slovakia, raises the question of how they differ in some selected population communities (e.g. age, education, economic activity, religion) and whether there are differences according to their place of residence (e.g. size of municipalities). In this study we tried to point out the existing differences in fertility levels and the parity structure of women in relation to ethnicity, education and place of residence. Other important questions that we analyse in our paper are the differences in family formation in connection to ethnicity. For this purpose, we use not only marital status but also census results by households. In the last part of the study we examine the issue of ethnic exogamy.

The Middle East is one of the most turbulent regions in the world, and its resource potential makes it a major field for geopolitical clashes. The American strategy in this region is in many cases contradictory, almost always pragmatic, but often based on idealistic motives. The context analysis, the policies and the means the United States implement allows the essence of the American strategy to be traced and evaluated – whether it is transforming and how.

This article explores how a low carbon economy transition might affect two of the leading countries in the shia/suni division in the Middle East – Iran and Saudi Arabia. The aim is to compare current and future demographic data in order to predict which of those two countries would have harder times to adapt to a low carbon economy. While comparing current demographic data, one may assume that both countries have similar characteristics, they diverge drastically when we compare the immigration statistics. Saudi Arabia is extremely dependent on immigration labour force. The analysis shows that a significant drop in its oil revenues may push those migrant away, seriously damaging its economy and the political role Saudi Arabia plays in the Middle East.

In this article, its author offers the practical considerations of a philologist, a linguist, a translation-studies researcher, and an eager modern-language academic teacher, regarding a range of contemporary technological solutions/tools for enhancing the acquisition of a foreign language (English). In particular, the author refers to electronic pedagogical dictionaries – the monolingual Dictionary.com, the bilingual Wielojęzyczny słownik polskiOFFLINE, and the semibilingual Słownik angielskiegoDiki, which are presently commonly used by young language learners. Such smart-applications developed for smartphones and tablets – in the author’s view – are remarkable tools for enhancing the complex language teaching and learning process, but – on the other hand – they do require certain methodological training if they are to bring a range of didactic benefits to their users. As the author perceives this notion, such a training regarding the smart dictionary applications – the metalexicographic training – should become the integral part of the modern language teaching and learning process, which may serve as highly beneficial to both smart-users of electronic dictionaries and their smart-teachers alike.
