The article presents the contribution of Mosko Moskov to the study of sound symbolism. His research on Turkic and Turkish borrowings of sound-symbolic origin in Balkan languages is the first complete and thorough investigation on phonetically motivated words in Bulgarian linguistics. This pioneering work of the scientist was written at a time when the attitude to sound symbolism was highly skeptical.

The article is devoted to Prof. M. Moskov’s studies which reflect his interest in language culture issues. The studies contain implicit directions related to the linguist’s privilege and obligations in explaining and exploring linguistic features. Based on his philological education and extensive knowledge in the field of general linguistics, the author directs his attention to the problems of language culture and seeks to formulate the theoretical basis for its formation. The place of lexical borrowings and the attitude towards them are presented in their relation to the formation of the modern Bulgarian literary language.

The parallelity of language explicates – language units is due to their common affiliation – the self (the subject of consciousness) whose voice introduces them to the communicative process. In emotions, however, the voice is only the producer – it models and modulates. These explicates are not part of the language system. They represent non-linguistic consciousness and are a phonetic expression of emotion, not of ration.

In this article, the author proves (making comparison with Serbian) that the morpheme -to in Bulgarian personal nouns of the type Vancheto, Lencheto, Miteto, etc., is not a definite article by origin but a transformation of an old nt-stem plural ending.
