The paper examines the creation of the “nomadic writer” concept in the autobiographical narratives of the Portuguese writer Jorge Listopad. It traces the features that characterize the extraterritorial writing, as well as the thematic presence of the migration problems, in particular that of the language nomadism in the short story collections Biography of Crystal (Biografia de Cristal, 1992), Slipping (Deslizamento, 2009), and Remington (Remington, 2013).

The article presents the specific phonetic and morphological features of the dialect of the village of Hebilevo, Komotini district. They are compared to the peculiarities of the dialect of Gorni Yurutsi village, Krumovgrad region, which is part of the dialect of village Hebilevo. It shows the general peculiarities and differences between the two Bulgarian dialects.

The paper analyses the writing of three authors who emigrated from the Balkans and settled in France in 1960s and 1970s. – Vassilis Alexakis (of Greek descent), Dumitru Tsepeneag (of Romanian descent) and Julia Kristeva (of Bulgarian descent). It aims to present the intermediate position of these immigrant authors in Western European environment in regard to the constituent components of their new identity – an intermediate position that allows them to examine the processes simultaneously from the “outside” and the “inside” and to generate bidirectional interpretations and literary images. The issues are further compounded by the inherent “crossroad” and “transitory” geopolitical characteristics of the Balkans, often thought of as a border region between the East and the West. From this point of view, the immigrant authors from the Balkan region appear to have a very complex existence, in which two kinds of duality intertwine – the one imposed by migration, and the other imposed by the “marginalization” and “uncertainty” of the Balkans when it comes to their European status. Because of these peculiarities, the three writers construct in their novels a variety of models for imagining the “native” and the “foreign”, the centre (European West) and the periphery (European Southeast), and the Other.

Linguistic functions of the vocative as a morphological, syntactic and pragmatic-semantic category

The vocative as a pragmatic-semantic category, i.e. vocativeness as an appellative category, is a means of expressing many linguistic functions. From the functional point of view, vocative expressions are never monosemic, i.e. they do not serve only a conative function, as explicitly defined in the literature, but they very frequently perform other linguistic functions as well – especially the emotive function (expressing speaker’s feelings, personal attitude towards the interlocutor) and the poetic one. As a means of establishing and maintaining communication, i.e. checking the functioning of the communication channel, vocative expressions perform a phatic function as well. The referential function of vocative expressions is confined to the subject and predicative role in the language of folk poetry, and this paper shows that such a role in the contemporary Croatian language can also be performed by vocative expressions in the role of predicate adjuncts and adverbials with certain verbs.

Addressing the notions of convention and context in social media research

The aim of this paper is to discuss two fundamental pragmatic notions, convention and context within the framework of communication on social media. By presenting an overview of theoretical perspectives on the two notions and analyzing concrete examples from Twitter we put forward the importance of the dynamic and constant synergy between convention and context in communication on social media, but also in communication in general. Examples of tweets (Twitter posts) will show that the core principles of traditional communication – conventionalization and contextualization – remain strong and are visible in concrete realizations through new ‘communicative items’ such as hashtags (i.e. #onokad) and handles (i.e. @username). The technology behind the media opens up new avenues of creativity for the participants (users, speakers), yet the creativity remains situated within ‘contexts’ (micro- and macro-level) and perpetuated (or dismissed) through mechanisms of ‘conventionalization’. Pragmatics is shown to be a highly relevant and appropriate scholarly field for comprehensive research into language and communication on social media.

Fonološko-morfološke osobenosti turopoljskih povijesnih dokumenata 17. stoljeća

In this paper the authors discuss some interesting facts about the language of the historical documents of Turopolje in Croatia from 17th century. The language analysis is taken on twenty eight texts. A special attention has been given to the question of the language differences between 16th century texts and 17th century as well on its phonological and morphological elements. The linguistic description of these documents contains a break-down of the texts into its phonological and morphological elements which show the belonging to the Hybrid (more) and the Kajkavian Croatian literary language (less).

I costrutti preconcessivi in italiano e in russo: primi risultati di una ricerca sul corpus parallelo del NKRJa

This paper presents some of the options available in Italian and Russian to express a preconcessive construction, typically formed by a paratactic correlative structure coding a contrast between the connected textual elements. Data were obtained from the Italian- Russian parallel corpus of the Russian National Corpus (NKRJa), by looking for the Russian translation of some typical Italian pre-concessive connectives.

Il corpus parallelo italiano-russo-italiano come strumento per l'indagine contrastiva delle marche discorsive e testuali: il caso di comunque e i suoi traduttivi russi

The Italian adverb/conjunction comunque has recently acquired new textual and discursive functions which haven’t yet been completely described. The article provides a corpusdriven analysis based on a bidirectional Italian-Russian Parallel Corpus (PC) in order to show 1) the usefulness of PC for linguistic heuristic inquiry on discurse markers; 2) how a contrastive analysis helps explain the semantic value of discursive and textual markers. The analysis shows that comunque can be a 1) demarcative, 2) conclusive, 3) modal (expressing evaluation), 4) or generalization marker.

Connettivi polifunzionali e traduzione. Gli equivalenti di certes in italiano e inglese nella prosa giornalistica

By comparing parallel and comparable corpora of press articles, this study shows how the epistemic adverb certes moved away from its original assertive meaning and specialized in the concessive function when it is followed by mais, which is a sign of a more advanced grammaticalization compared to certo and certainly that have a mainly intensifying meaning. The analysis takes into account L1 attrition in the translation process.

Le mot tut : une étude contrastive

The paper analyzes the semantics of the Russian linguistic unit tut that is shown to be polyfunctional. The study is contrastive, with all the data being collected from the parallel corpora of the Russian National Corpus (RNC). Analyzing the tut-contexts, the author looks at the solutions literary translators opted for while translating from Russian into French and vice versa. This is how some specific meanings of the connective tut have been found to add to the traditional locative, temporal and narrative meanings.

PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS WITH SACRED NUMBERS IN RUSSIAN AND SERBIAN

Our aim is to study phraseological units that have numbers in their construction. The material was collected from phraseological dictionaries of Russian and Serbian languages. In both languages, phraseological units with sacred numbers appear frequently in speech and writing, for example: Rus. книга за семью печатями – Srb. књига за седам печата [a closed book, literally “a book with seven seals”]; Rus. за семью запорами – Srb. иза седамбрава/катанаца [under lock and key, literally “well guarded”]; Rus. семь смертных грехов –Srb. седам смртних греха [capital sins, literally “seven deadly sins”]; Rus. за тридевятьземель – Srb. преко седам/девет брда/планина [at (to) the other end of the world, literally“very far away”]; Rus. чувствовать себя на седьмом небе – Srb. бити наседмом/деветом/десетом небу [(be) in seventh heaven, literally “(to be, feel) boundlessly happy”]; Rus. в трех шагах от кого, от чего – Srb. два три корака [within a stoneʼs throw of, literally “ very close (to s.o. or sth.), very near”]. Phraseological units with numeric components are regarded as a descriptive meta-language. This analysis can provide an insight into relationships between culture and language.

The article is devoted to the idea of learning Russian as a foreign language through active communication with Russian native speakers in different types of activities. Examined are possibilities for such type of youth forum on the example of Herzen’s youth forum “My Initiative in Education” in which took part students from Russia and Bulgaria (in Saint Petersburg and in Varna). Some prospects of joint activities between Bulgarian and Russian students and schoolchildren in assisting mastering of Russian as foreign language are also shown.

Múdrosť a múdry: O poznaní a nepoznaní

Contemporary researchers have cast considerable light on the limits of ancient knowledge imposed from outside the human intellect. As for obstacles to learning from within, modern interpreters have yet to give an adequate analysis of students' resistance, despite translations of Sumerian and Egyptian scribal texts and corresponding comments in Sirach. A constant complaint runs through these school texts that some students resisted all effort to educate them. Also, a section in Sirach dealing with difficulties confronting teachers and students demonstrates the extent of affinities between Egyptian and Israelite wisdom literature. Ben Sira concentrates on irksome aspects of learning, using images from agricultural labor and recalling the desirable season of harvest. In trying to understand why so many obstacles stand between learner and a desired goal, Ben Sira suggests that knowledge plays a game of hide and seek, testing students to determine whether or not they deserve any reward. The paper offers the answer to the question: “Did biblical scholars think of knowledge as an achievement or a gift?”

"ΓΑΔΑΤΗС". OBSERVAŢII ASUPRA UNUI ANTROPONIM DE PE UN GRAFFITO DE LA ROMULA

As a result of the archaeological research developed at the Roman settlement of Romula a fragment of a Roman pottery was discovered, which is nowadays preserved in the Museum of Caracal. Here the word ΓΑΔΑΤΗС was incised. D. Tudor considered it a Syrian anthroponym derived from the name of the god Gad, which lead to the formation of numerous Syro-Palmyrean anthroponyms. This opinion was shared by all those who, up to the time being, inserted this graffito in various epigraphic corpora of Dacia, considering it as further evidence of the Syrian presence in Roman Dacia. Yet, the supporters of such a viewpoint did not take into account all the available data which allows us to assert that Gadates is definitely an Iranian anthroponym attested on other sources as following: Xenophon’s Cyropaedia, The Letter of Darius to Gadatas, the Elamite Ka-da-da inscription discovered in the Persepolis fortifications, a Greek inscription from Delos and another Greek inscription from Antiphellos in Lycia pertaining to the Roman period. Xenophon’s Gadatas and the one mentioned in the Letter provide the Iranian character of the anthroponym. Within the Letter, Darius specifically name Gadatas ‘(his) slave’. We encounter this term in the Old Persian variant of the Behistun inscription as comprised in the collocation mana bandaka, meaning ‘my subject’ or ‘my servant’. It exclusively refers to the highest ranked Iranian individuals in the proximity of the Great King. Gadatas anthroponym is probably ahypochoristic derived from Bagadata, a very widespread name in the pre-Islamic Iranian world, having the same meaning with the Greek Theodotos and the Slavic Bogdan, i.e. ‘the Gift of God’. We do not know precisely where Gatates of Romula came from. He could belong to Syria as well, where the Iranian anthroponyms were natural, as the land had been subjected to the Iranian rule for more than two centuries.

The author presents the objectives leading to the creation of a new BA program in Balkan studies that could potentially benefit Bulgaria-related academic disciplines.
