L’absurde dans le théâtre Dada et présurréaliste français

The publication focuses on the absurd in the French Dada and pre-surrealist theatre, examining the scenical potential of three texts which have, until now, remained practically unexplored: “La Premiere aventure celeste de Mr. Antipyrine” by T. Tzara, “Les Mysteres de l’amour” by R. Vitrac, and “S’il vous plait” by A. Breton and P. Soupault. The author understands the absurd as an aesthetic category applicable to theatre analysis in general – contrary to the “Theatre of the absurd”, a concept suggested by M. Esslin in order to characterize the avant-garde of the 1950s and often criticized for its lack of precision. The conclusion evaluates Esslin's contribution to the study of the absurd in theatre.

Tremendismo: el sabor amargo de la vida: Tras las huellas de la estética tremendista en la narrativa española del siglo XX

Tremendism is one of the most peculiar phenomena that appeared on the Spanish cultural scene in the 20th century. Its origin at the beginning of the 1940s had been accompanied with several polemics that have gradually faded out. Tremendism appeared along with a new literary group, the so called Generation of 36, whose literary works influenced the later development of the Spanish narrative. A greater revival of interest in this issue took place only much later, especially in the 1990s after Camilo Jose Cela, the leading representative of tremendism, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. At the same time, new writers from the Generation X published their tremendist novels. This monograph is a contribution to the academic discussion on tremendism as a literary phenomenon.

Počátky latinské písemné kultury v českých zemích: Nejstarší latinské rukopisy a zlomky v Čechách a na Moravě

"The monograph focuses the onset of the Latin written culture in Bohemia and Moravia, especially its sources. Its focus lies on the presentation of manuscript fragments of the early medieval era, which were usually excluded from the codicological discourse or marginalised; most of them are published for the first time. The intrusion of the Latin caroline script in the Bohemian lands is presented on the base of a complex palaeographical and codicological anlysis as a phenomenon, that accompanied the Latin trend of christianisation, which came into the central Danubian region from the ecclesiastical centres of Bavaria during the IXth Cent. From mid-11th century on, the preserved sources show an important transformation: the initial passivity (i. e. dependence of the Bohemian lands upon the import of books from other countries) is transforming into an active participation of Bohemia in the transcriptions of Latin texts. In this period the oldest identifiable scribe school in the Bohemian lands can be traced – the scriptorium in Břevnov monastery founded during the long abbotship of Meginhardus. The book includes coloured pictures of all relevant sources including diagrams visualising the codicological conclusions; codicological and palaeographical registers are added."

Humour and Translation in Children’s Literature. A Cognitive Linguistic Approach

The present book combines the results of my studies on developmental psychology, theories on humour, translation theories and cognitive linguistics with the special emphasis on the theory of mental spaces and conceptual integration. Gill Fauconnier and Mark Turner’s model of conceptual blending serves as a basis for creating mental maps that can be used by translators as tools in translating humour, especially wordplays. // The book contains several examples of translating humorous elements taken from English children’s literature (Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Roald Dahl’s The BFG and Francesca Simon’s Horrid Henry) into Polish and Portuguese in its European and Brazilian version with the use of mental maps. Cognitive aspects of translation are strongly emphasised, while translation theories and developmental psychology can be treated as a background for translation analysis and evaluation.

One hundred years of Germanic Studies in Brno equates to a hundred years of attempting to define the profile of a philological discipline situated very close, in a historical and geographical sense, to the identity of the university, the city and the whole country. Čeština Bedřicha Smetany: Analýza Smetanovy česky psané korespondence

The monograph deals with the research of the composer Bedřich Smetana’s Czech. Smetana (1824–1884) lived in the period of time which is, in works on history of Czech language, referred to as revival or post-revival. From the linguistic perspective, this period is typical of replacement of German by Czech in the function of high communication variety and formation of modern standard language norm. The publication poses a question how contemporary speakers, who were educated but were not professionally involved in Czech language (as e. g. writers or journalists), mastered this norm. By the analysis of orthographical, grammatical and also complementarily of lexical aspects of Smetana’s correspondence, the monograph demonstrates how is Smetana’s expressing prototypical and in contrary extraordinary. The aim of the work is also to contribute to the knowledge of constitutive standard language of the second half of the 19th century.

Synergistic Application of Metaphorical and Humorous Elements in Polish and English Advertising Discourse

The book Synergistic Application aims at investigating the synergistic application of metaphorical and humorous elements in Polish and English multimodal press ads. The presence of conceptual similarities as regards both construction and understanding of humour and metaphor, seen through the lens of the theory of conceptual integration, is a starting point for discussion. The analysis of advertising material makes it possible to investigate joint workings of the phenomena in question. Furthermore, research participants’ feelings on perceived attractiveness and funniness levels of the ads sampled are examined. The results help to check how the informants understand the mechanisms inducing humour and metaphor in ads, which allows for the identification of both similarities and differences between the two language samples.

Dacă primele două numere ale revistei A Treia Europă au fost consacrate unor teme importante ale culturii central- -europene, începând cu numărul dublu 3-4 am introdus un alt criteriu de organizare a cercetărilor noastre, încercând să ne concentrăm analiza asupra literaturilor țărilor din regiune. Primul subiect al acestor investigații a fost Polonia, al cărei destin plin de dramatism și de tensiuni l-am socotit paradigmatic pentru înțelegerea întregii dinamici politice și culturale a zonei. O a doua etapă din acest vast program se realizează acum prin numărul consacrat Ungariei, mai precis dialogului dintre culturile română și maghiară. în anii următori revista noastră își va orienta atenția asupra celorlalte culturi din Europa Centrală. De ce Ungaria? în primul rând, datorită literaturii sale contemporane extrem de dinamică, foarte bine reprezentată din punct de vedere al traducerilor în cele mai importante limbi de circulație internațională, o literatură care își datorează vitalitatea talentului câtorva scriitori de mare calibru, din rândul cărora se detașează tripleta (atent investigată și în paginile revistei noastre) Esterhâzy-Konrâd-Nâdas. Apoi, contactelor directe dintre reprezentanții Fundației A Treia Europă și intelectuali maghiari de marcă ai momentului, care au culminat cu vizita la Timișoara a lui Konrâd György, președintele Academiei de Arte din Berlin. Rezultatul acestei întâlniri este un volum din seria „Seminar” în curs de apariție la Editura Polirom. întâlnirile unor grupuri de intelectuali români cu o parte a elitei intelectuale maghiare în cadrul unor colocvii organizate la Centrul Cultural Român din Budapesta din inițiativa directorului său, Anamaria Pop, parteneriatele academice ale Centrului de studii comparate central- și sud-est-europene al Fundației A Treia Europă cu Universitatea Eötvös Lorând din Budapesta și Universitatea din Szeged, colaborarea intensă și fructuoasă a revistei noastre profesori de literatură maghiară și comparată de la Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai, dar și cu tinerii redactori ai revistei Korurik din Cluj au fost de natură să stimuleze conceperea și realizarea numărului de față. Nu în ultimul rând trebuie să evocăm o Timișoară a excepționalei relații româno-maghiare, exprimată de reviste trilingve (română-germană-maghiară), dar și de eminenți traducători, autentici mediatori între culturi, precum Franyo Zoltân, Aurel Buteanu, Andrei Lillin, Ion Stoia-Udrea ș.a. Mulțumirile noastre se îndreaptă spre toți cei care au fost alături de noi în acest efort : Anamaria Pop, Balâzs Imre-Jözsef, Horvath Andor, Farkas Jenö, Maria Pongrâcz-Popescu, revistele Observator cultural și Korunk. Nu în ultimul rând, mulțumim generoșilor finanțatori care au sprijinit realizarea programelor noastre de cercetare și de editare a revistei : Fundația Pro Helvetia și Fundația Culturală Europeană din Amsterdam.

Polsko-słoweński dialog międzykulturowy. Slovensko-poljski medkulturni dialog

The volume addresses important issues of Polish-Slovenian intercultural dialogue and its multifaceted nature. It has been divided into five parts, each dealing with a different type of relationship and often deepening and supplementing previous reflection on the subject. Some texts, moreover, uncover areas of Polish-Slovenian dialogue that are still completely unknown. The first part deals with direct Polish-Slovenian contacts, experiences that constitute a biographical feature and are related to various types of wanderings. The authors of the texts collected in the second part present intertextual relations in the sphere of themes and literary structures between Polish and Slovenian writers. In the next part, the authors' attention is focused on literary translations, which are an important manifestation of Polish-Slovenian and Slovenian-Polish intercultural dialogue and are an expression of the need to bring the two cultures closer together and to translate them through the medium of literature. The intercultural dialogue at the level of linguistic structures, content and expression, is described in the articles collected in the next part of the volume. The last part is devoted to the sphere of education, promotion of the language and culture of both countries, cooperation in the field of higher education or selected aspects of language policy in higher education in Poland and Slovenia. The volume Polish-Slovenian Intercultural Dialogue is the outcome of the first exclusively Slovenian academic conference in Poland and in the world devoted to cultural contacts between Poland and Slovenia.
