This publication is the result of research by a young collective (professional staff and doctoral and non-doctoral students) from the Department of Slavonic Studies at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Arts. Its component chapters provide studies on the broadly-defined topic of the urban space in all three zones of the Slavic region—East-Slavic, West-Slavic (Central European), and South Slavic (Balkan-Slavic)—with some carry over into the non-Slavic Balkan environment. The whole publication is based on the area concept, which consists mainly in stepping beyond the conventional borders of traditional philology and creating room for intertwining of philological and social sciences. The individual surveys analyze phenomena traditionally covered by linguistics, language teaching theory, history, religious studies, and literary science.

For the first time, they can discover detailed linguistic analysis of the names of 357 trains that have been crossing the Czech Republic since its foundation. The third part of a Musical-Literary Dictionary builds on the first two parts of the Dictionary dealing with international and Czech composers which were published by the Masaryk University Press in 2011. The third part of the Dictionary concludes a monumental dictionary trilogy. This work deals with literary production of the 20th century composers and registers only their musicial compositions which are linked to literary (exceptionally also visual) art. The link could have a form of unspecified literary, visual or musical inspiration. In the most cases the connectionis about a common idea, theme, content or text of a literary work. The Dictionary designed this way brings a new and original point of view to the 20th century artificial and non-artificial musical production in a worldwide context into Czech and world musicial and literary lexicography. The book includes 4,205 musicial works of 533 Czech and international composers living from 1930 to the present and, on the other hand, it includes also 1,995 literary authors whose literary works have inspired the birth of musicial works. Furthermore the Dictionary pays attention to folk literature and its display in musicial production and also to musical works through which their authors have paid tribute to important artists of the past.

This book analyzes the specifics of mature Fletcherian style, proposing a reading that agrees with the Baroque mode. Publication deals with critical history of Spanish Gypsy lexicography. In first place, it pays attention to the theoretical lexicography and it applies its rules, mainly from the area of lexicographical criticism, to the corpus of Spanish Gypsy dictionaries. The main part of the book presents a critical study of repertoires of lexical units of this mixed dialect, starting from the 16th and 18th centuries manuscripts, 19th century amateur lexicographers’ dictionaries and ending up with 20th century ones. Final chapters look closely to Spanish Gypsy vocabularies and lists of lexical units present in publications about flamenco and Spanish Gypsies in general.

The monograph centres on the changes in content and form in Russian literature at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. The first part of the monograph discusses the roots of the shift in the system of values and in the concept of the individual in comparison with 19th-century Russian prose, and shows differences in the models of the world presented by literary works of the period. The second part of the monograph explores particular phenomena in the work of V. Bryusov, L. N. Andreyev, L. N. Tolstoy, I. Shmelyov, S. N. Sergeev-Censkij and F. Sologub in relation to the work of F. Kafka and R. Musil.

The monograph deals with the issues of expressivity (emotionality) in language. It starts with a theoretical chapter about the development and characteristics of fairy tales, fairy tales of German and Czech provenance are then analysed and compared. The author categorizes language expressivity at different language levels: phonetic, morphologic and word formation, syntactic and lexical, as well as those relating to text-linguistic, pragmatic and stylistic aspects of the utterance. The book also discusses translation problems, i.e. comparison of the original and the translation. The monograph analyses selected fairy tales by brothers Grimm, Clemens von Brentano, Michael Ende, Karel Jaromír Erben, Božena Němcová and Karel Čapek and presents examples of expressivity at several language levels.

The thesis deals primarily with the term wit and its modern and historical usage in literary and aesthetic theories. Further, it concerned with the literary and aesthetic implications of the terms wit and esprit as they were theorized in critical writings of several authors of the early modern England and France. The thesis has two primary goals. The first goal is to re-assess the English concept of wit, nowadays regarded as an out-dated device of past poetic systems, and to present it as vital and useful part of the contemporary discourse. The second goal is to provide comparative reading of early modern English and French theoretical texts dealing with wit and esprit, respectively. Presenting ideas on the English term wit as employed in the theoretical writings in the light of its French equivalent esprit, I wish to demonstrate a gradual development of the terms from rhetoric to aesthetic.

The book summarises the basic principles as well as main tendencies within the medieval lyric genre Minnesang – both in its German version, investigating its individual evolutionary phases, and in later appearing old Czech love poetry of high Middle ages. Moreover, the author of this comparative study Sylvie Stanovská applies her findings to younger German love poetry before 1500 as well so she gains a broad analytical basis, pursuant to which she constructs a novel, with numerous text examples supported typology of the old Czech love poetry. This typology can thus lead to further research of this genre.

This book analyzes in contrastive way Czech and Bulgarian translations of phrasemes of two Serbian prose works: The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić (1945) and Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavić (1984). It tracks and describes the formal, semantic and stylistic variations of Czech and Bulgarian translation solutions while trying to answer the question, to what extent the greater typological linguistic proximity is playing bigger role at the accuracy of the translation of phraseology (Czech is thus closer to Serbian than Bulgarian) and to what extent the genetic and cultural-historical propinquity is more important (Bulgarian to Serbian is thus closer than Czech).

It could appear that people use the same language in school as they do everywhere else. Nonetheless, school language is so specific that it is often considered to be a foreign language. In fact, students begin to learn particular facts together with ways to talk about them as soon as they enter school. The sole purpose of this book is to examine this process which is typically called school-language socialization. The book, based on empirical research of classes of Czech language at lower secondary schools, describes how students learn to use language in a specific culturally determined way in conformity with the customary teaching activities of a given school subject.

The monograph deals with the issue of the categories of state (predicative adverbs), which is a debatable point of contemporary Russian linguistics. In the center of interest are therefore indeclinable units that engage only in the predicate role of single-predicate sentences and express the state generally. The monograph completely describes how these words are represented and how they function in Old Russian texts from 12th to 17th century. The analysed units are viewed in lexical, derivative, morphological and syntactic terms. The complex research of such word is carried out in the confrontational diachronic and synchronic aspects of using data from Czech language.

The monograph examines the ways in which Indigenous women’s non-fiction published in the 1990s contributed to theoretical articulations of Indigenous feminism and to a historiographic counter-discourse which has intervened into the dominant narratives of nation-building in settler colonies. Personal non-fiction and life writing by Native American authors Paula Gunn Allen and Anna Lee Walters (USA), by First Nations authors Lee Maracle and Shirley Sterling (Canada), and by Aboriginal authors Jackie Huggins and Doris Pilkington Garimara (Australia) are analyzed in detail to demonstrate how a hybrid writing style, combining scholarly criticism with auto/biography and fictionalized storytelling, is used to inscribe Indigenous women’s cultural difference, subjugated knowledges, transgenerational trauma from colonization, and resistance to forced assimilation.

This monograph explores word order transformations in some Bulgarian and Serbian Church-Slavonic gospel transcriptions. The changes in word order in these texts are registered as variants to an Old Church-Slavonic text (Codex Marianus) and to the text of Old Greek New Testament. The publication discovers the principles on which the word order in the texts from the 12th and 13th century was organized and finds some differences from the word order in Old Church-Slavonic language. It also focuses on the question of occurrence of some new, progressive tendencies, and new, different word order models.
