Comparison of Ivan Mažuranić's Political Writings with the Declaration on the Name and Status of the Croatian Literary Language

The paper analyzes and compares Mažuranić’s political writings published in 1848 under the titles Croatians to Hungarians and Manifesto of the Croatian-Slavonian People with the 1967 Declaration on the Name and Status of the Croatian Literary Language as well as the reactions of the contemporaries to these texts. Based on considerations of the social reaction and fate of the authors of the aforementioned texts, we have analyzed the democratic character of society in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and socialist Yugoslavia. The results of the research have shown the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy saw a more democratic atmosphere and far more freedom of expression of personal opinion than socialist Yugoslavia.

Departing from the “aesthetics of unrepresentability” of testimonial literature and implied “belatedness and collapse of witnessing” (G. Agamben, Sh. Felman, D. Laub), the paper engages in the economic foundations of literature through analysis of symbolic meanings of economic metaphors in Štajner’s memoirs Seven Thousand Days in Siberia and Shalamov’s story Lend-Lease, and through illuminating different aspects of intertextual and intercultural exchange between Štajner’s memoirs and Kiš’s “pseudo-factual” fiction A Tomb for Boris Davidovich. What is testimony and can it be – considering the nature of the one who testifies and the language in which he testifies – “valid,” “valuable,” “useful,” to use the language of economy? Can we think about Kiš’s literary appropriation of Štajner’s memoirs as an outlet for reclaiming the voice not only of Štajner, but also of Kiš’s father, who perished in Auschwitz? What are the uses of economic hypothesis in literary studies?

The paper considers travelogues of Yugoslav female writers Alma Karlin, Jelena Dimitrijević, Isidora Sekulić, Marica Gregorič Stepančič, Marica Strnad, Luiza Pesjak. These texts created in the first half of the 20th century in Serbian, Slovenian and German are on the periphery of the literary field and, with rare exceptions, do not belong to the canon. The most famous of these authors are Sekulić from Serbia and the German-speaking writer Karlin from Slovenia. Recently, the work of Dimitrijević has also become an object of attention of researchers. Other travelogues writers are almost forgotten. Identity problems, especially national ones, are a constant component of the travelogue genre. During a journey, the author directs his attention to “other /alien” peoples and cultures that can be called foreign to the perceiving consciousness. However, when one perceives the “other”, one inevitably turns to one’s “own”, one’s own identity. The concept of “own – other /alien”, on which the dialogical philosophy is based (M. Buber, G. Marcel, M. Bakhtin, E. Levinas), implies an understanding of the cultural “own” against the background of the “alien” and at the same time culturally “alien” on the background of “own”. Women’s travel has a special status in culture. Even in the first half of the 20th century the woman was given space at home. Going on a journey, especially unaccompanied, was at least unusual for a woman. According to Simone de Beauvoir, a woman in society is “different /other”. Therefore, women’s travelogues can be defined as the look of the “other” on the “other /alien”. In this paper, particular attention is paid to the interrelationship of gender, national identities and their conditioning with a cultural and historical context. At the beginning of the 20th century in the Balkans, national identity continues actively to develop and the process of women’s emancipation is intensifying. Therefore, the combination of gender and national issues for Yugoslavian female travelogues of this period is especially relevant. Dimitrijević’s travelogue Seven Seas and Three Oceans demonstrates this relationship most vividly: “We Serbian women are no less patriotic than Egyptian women… Haven’t Serbian women most of the merit that the big Yugoslavia originated from small Serbia?” As a result of this study, the specificity of the national and gender identity constructs in the first half of the 20th century in the analyzed texts is revealed. For this period one can note, on the one hand, the preservation of national and gender boundaries, often supported by stereotypes, on the other hand, there are obvious tendencies towards the erosion of the established gender and national constructs, the mobility of models of gender and national identification as well, largely due to the sociohistorical processes of the time.

Franjevačke početnice od Divkovića do Jukića

Contemporary impression that reading is simple is just an illusion acquired through automatic and unconscious processes of learning this skill, cognitive neuroscientists warn. The architecture of the human brain was not designed for reading, and mastering of literacy is one of the most important epigenetic achievements of homo sapiens in a way that reading has become „transformative catalyst of the intellectual development of an individual and literal cultures“ in the past millennia (Wolf 2019:12). In this sense the role of the Franciscan primers in Croatian language in the history of teaching literacy over a Bosna Srebrena province, ie. within the current borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is going to be observed. Hence this article analyzes all printed Franciscan primers from the first known, which was published in bosanica script together with little Nauk krstjanski by Matija Divković in 1669 to the last one of the six latinic primers, which had been published during the 19th century until the Austro-Hungarian military occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. In this research corpus special attention is going to be dedicated to Divković’s bukvica, the first and only specialized textbook for teaching reading, printed in bosanica script, and latinic primers Poçetak slovstva (Split 1815) by Augustin Miletić, Bukvar iliti poçetak slovstva illiriçkogʼ, i latinskog jezika (Budim 1836) by Stjepan Marijanović and Početak pismenstva (Zagreb 1848) by Ivan Frane Jukić. Through these didactic handbooks the process of transition from bosanica to Latin script is followed, as well as the process of enquiry for the appropriate reform of Latin graphics, which ended by final acceptance of Illyrian graphics in Jukić’s primer. Shaping of primers, impact of methods of teaching the initial literacy and their shifts in practical use will be perceived within social-political context of the last centuries of Ottoman rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Franciscans are among the first ones who joined the tradition of publishing specialized textbooks in our area, which testifies of a high degree of concern for education and literacy in the vernacular.

Five-Year Plan as a Science-Fiction Picturebook from 1948

It was in this period that a very unusual picturebook appeared, aimed at young readers. PRIČA I NJENA SENKA (IVO ANDRIĆ "PISMO IZ 1920. GODINE")

Proteklih godina ova je pripovetka izišla na zao glas, ne toliko ona, koliko njen segment "pismo", ne toliko "pismo", koliko jedna kratka rečenica. Na rubu pameti, u fantastičnom procesu redukcije i snižavanja, pripovetka je postala "Andrićevo pismo", amanet u četiri reči, jedina BeHa signatura, vazdašnja metafora: "Bosna je zemlja mržnje". U tom poslu izvođači su bili i akademske tribine i sokaci i krčme balkanske; i mucanje neukih i reči školovanih propovednika mržnje nosio je isti talas. Literatura je sišla ravno u život, u "istorijski trenutak", da odigra spasonosnu ulogu inverzivno podmetnutog uzroka bez presedana - samo da se ne bi videlo ono što je na (ne)delu.

Sjećanje na sedamdesete

Vrijeme šezdesetih i sedamdesetih godina prošloga stoljeća u bivšoj državi prosuđujemo kao vrijeme kad se značajno osjetilo odleđivanje boljševičko-totalitarnoga sustava. Proces je tiho započeo 60-tih godina, do kada je vladajuća propaganda nametala vlastitu istinu i zatirala svaki drugi pokušaj interpretacije aktualnih i povijesnih događanja. No neutralan promatrač ne bi vidio problem u interpretaciji koliko u perspektivi koja je trebala biti zasnovana na tom tumačenju. Ta akumulacija mnogih objeda nagomilavala se na tzv. kontrarevolucionarne elemente koji ipak nisu mogli biti baš za sve krivi. S druge strane, važno je vidjeti kako se i u tadašnjem sustavu vodila bespoštedna borba za vlast, a dobar dio politike se iscrpljivao u kadrovskoj domeni.

Grbovi senjskih Rittera Vitezovića i heraldika u djelima Pavla Rittera Vitezovića

In the article the author describes the well-known noble of Senj, the Ritter-Vitezovićs, which as an old knight's noble family, who since 1365 has had genealogy and a noble coat of arms with the agnomen of "von Frendorf", began in the 16th century from Alsace, where itbelonged to ancient aristocracy, and then moved to Senj. One branch of the family went to the Czech Republic also from where the Senj branch of Ritter-Vitezovi!s originates. In the paper is presented the old family coat of arms and the arms from the grant of nobility and herald from 1652. The Ritter family in Senj very early on Croatized its old surname and carried the surname Vitezović. They received nobility and the coats of arms on 15th October 1652 from King Ferdinand III in Prague. Nobility and coat of arms were granted to Antun Ritter Vitezović, his wife Doroteja, brothers Juraj and Ivan, and son Pavao, who was born that year. The nobility of the Ritter-Vitezovićs was announced and confirmed in the Croatian parliament. The first to move to Senj was Antun Ritter, who was a sergeant at the Nehaj fortress and had the title of prince and who was also provost-marshal in Ledenice, and who participated in battles near Klis in 1537. Certainly one of the most prominent members of this family was Pavao Ritter Vitezović, who was born in Senj on 12th January 1652, and went to school in Senj and Zagreb. He was anhistorian, archivist, heraldist, cartographer, printer, poet and a representative of Senj in the Hungarian-Croatian parliament in Bratislava. He worked and taught with Kranjska Baron I.W. Valvasor in Bogenšperk in Kranjska. Besides literature he was also involved in auxiliary historical sciences, especially genealogy, heraldry and sphragistics. He wrote a collection of socalled Illyrian heralds under the title of Stemmatographia, sive armorum Illyricorum delineatio, descriptio et restitutio, which was printed in Vienna in 1701, with a second edition being printed in Zagreb in 1702. Vitezovi! was the first in Croatia to introduce heraldry terminology in Latin and to set the importance of colours into heraldry, and his interest in heraldry was crucial for his stay with Valvasor in Kranjska. In the collection of Count Marsiglija in Bologna a manuscript written by Vitezovi! under the title of Regnorum et proviciarum Illyricorum insignia genuina was found. He is the founder of Croatian nation-building ideas and the forerunner of the national revival amongst Croats, he also wanted to achieve unity in spelling and language. Due to his great service in battle against the Turks he was twice awarded with the decoration of Golden Imperial Knight (eques aureatus). He was the founder and owner of “Zemaljske tiskare” press in Zagreb, and he died far away from his homeland and descendants in complete poverty on 20th January 1713 in Vienna, where he was also buried.

Moj prijatelj Šnajder

Jesen je 1969. godine, tek sam došao na studij iz Splita u Zagreb; pasionirano obilazim zagrebačka kazališta, najčešće sam jer nitko od mojih prijatelja, koje tih dana upoznajem, ne može podnijeti toliku količinu teatra u tako kratkom vremenu. U Zagrebačkome dramskom, koje se još ne zove po Gavelli, gledam Minigolf, čitao sam već o mladom autoru te drame u novinama, znam da je samo tri godine stariji od mene, bio je jedan od glavnih zagrebačkih šezdesetosmaša, iako tek dvadesetogodišnjak; u Minigolfu bavi se zbivanjima u jednom omladinskom listu šezdesetih godina (na način koji dosta podsjeća na »predigru « Krležina Vučjaka, koja se odigrava u redakciji novina Narodna sloga, neposredno nakon 1. svjetskog rata).

Josip Šentija – tihi borac za hrvatski jezik

The article discusses the contribution that the journalist, lexicographer and publicist Josip Šentija gave to the affirmation of the Croatian literary language by supporting the Declaration on the Name and Status of the Croatian Literary Language and by defending it against unitary linguistic and political attacks. It further discusses the suppression of the attempted Serbian language colonization of Radio Zagreb; the harvesting of the first post-declaration fruits manifested in the amended language articles in the 1974 constitutions of Yugoslav republics; the implementation of Art. 138 of the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Croatia about language in the third edition of the General Encyclopaedia of the Lexicographic Institute, and the cooperation with Miroslav Krleža and the central editorial board in building an encyclopaedic style and nurturing the Croatian language. Finally, the article analyses Šentija’s modern social democratic political orientation and his clear views of national components in the context of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and of the creation of an independent Croatian state, with an emphasis on Croatian-Serbian relations and on Greater Serbian expansionist programme that was partially founded on Karadžić’s motto “Serbs everywhere”, built around the non-scientific premise about the exclusive Serbianness of the Štokavian dialect.

Srpski diskurs o Andriću

The aim of the paper is to ascertain whether there is a Serbian discourse on Andrić, according to the same criteria Zoran Milutinović uses in his book Bitka za prošlost to ascertain the existence of the Bosniak discourse. Approaching Andrić’s opus through the notion of collective trauma related primarily to the Ottoman and Austro‑Hungarian period in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the author presents in the analysis of books and articles by Nikola Koljević, Vuk Milatović, Rade Lalović, Predrag Palavestra, Vladimir Dedijer, Zoran Konstantinović, Milan Bogdanović and Isidora Sekulić that the Serbian criticism read Andrić in a manner similar to that of the Bosniaks.

Jezična obilježja reklama u hrvatskom internetskom prostoru

The advertising of products and services in the last hundred or so years has caused the gradual creation of specific advertising discourse, whose characteristics are, among other things, directiveness, superlativeness, lexical and syntactic repetition, figurativeness, intertextuality, etc. (Bagić 2006, Kovačević – Badurina 2001, Udier 2006, Stolac – Vlastelić 2014). Advertising discourse shows certain differences depending on the nature of the advertisements, whether they be printed advertisements (in newspapers, on billboards, in broadcast teletext) or spoken advertisements (on the radio). Television commercials combine the possibilities that are offered by visual and spoken media, thereby making multimediality its most prominent feature. Internet advertising arose in the 1990s. At that time, there was not a lot of advertising on Croatian websites, and the few advertisements that were found on these websites were modeled on English-language examples (Halonja – Kovačević 1999). This paper will analyze the linguistic (stylistic, semantic, lexical and syntactic) features of advertisements that appear on the Internet in the Croatian language in 2015, and they will be compared with the characteristics of advertising discourse in other media, as known from related literature.

Grdoba napretka. Degeneracija, kultura normalizacije i hrvatska književnost na prijelazu iz 19. u 20. stoljeće

The thesis of the paper is that the Croatian bourgeois culture in the 19th century originates as the culture of normalization that strives to restrain, by its mechanisms of discipline such as psychiatry, the different forms of social abnormalities. At the same time, those mechanisms rely on the theory of degeneration that becomes an important topic of the Croatian literature of that time. First of all, the paper defines the range of connection between the theory of degeneration and Croatian modern literature. After that, the paper shows to what extent the former psychiatry and medicine themselves rely on the theory of degeneration. Finally, with the analysis of the novel Tito Dorčić, the paper confirms the complexity of the connections between the Croatian culture of the normalization in the 19th century and the fin de siècle literature that reflects and problematizes important social and cultural contradictions.
