Milan Kundera Közép–Európa tragédiájáról

The aim of the article is to depict the context of the origin of Kundera's essay „The Tragedy of Central Europe” (1984) and to summarize and characterize its key points. The author of the text also tries to answer the question why this essay has become a turning point in the debate on Cen-tral Europe's position between East and West. Then the author summa-rizes the most important voices of the debate, to which the essay has giv-en rise among emigrant circles. Not only did Kundera’s concept of Cen-tral Europe resonate among Central European intellectuals and emi-grants, but it also spoke to the West European and American public and helped popularize his literary work. „The Tragedy of Central Europe” es-tablishes Kundera’s attitude to the question of Central Europe. Here he lays the foundations of his thinking about the region, which he seems to have applied in his novelistic work as well. This essay had an enormous impact on discussions of Central Europe, and it has been analyzed in de-tail. Kundera’s controversial issues, especially those regarding his attitude to Russia and Russian culture, or the neglect of the Slovak context, as well as the abolition of the Slavic myth of Central Europe and his emphasis on the Hungarian literary and cultural contribution in formation of Central Europe are also discussed in the paper. There is no doubt that Kundera’s essay has begun the process of re-discovering Central Europe and has become an impetus for the rehabilitation of the region in the West and al-so has played an important role in formatting the Central European iden-tity.

The Imperative of Moral Integrity in Tereza Boučkova’s »Indian Run«

It is the placement of the specificity of women’s experience within the political context that made the book stand out from other literary productions by women at the time of its publication, when questions of women’s identity and their different experience of political issues were not part of a general public discussion. Also, the book is a contribution to the emerging discourses of feminism in the post-1989 era. The dominant issue underlying the entire narrative is the woman-narrator’s effort to find her place in the world and her search for her ‘female identity’. Feminist concerns come to the fore especially in the narrator’s contextualization of her personal and moral experience: her world is often the world of the male dissident heroes/martyrs, here represented by her father and, presumably, by Vaclav Havel (called ‘Monologue’ in the narrative). She exposes the cost to the family, and women in particular, of both the communist system and the men’s pursuit of their ideals while disregarding their families. Although the daughter shares her father’s hatred of the system and herself signs Charter 77, she confronts his moral character and removes the aura of the dissident martyr from him. The final de-heroization comes in the post-1989 episodes, in which Monologue’s moral integrity with respect to the women in his life is brought into question. Boučkova, probably without much knowledge of feminist literature, highlights the fact that the personal is also political (while the political, in her account, is always personal, too)

Narratives of a Witness: Testimony and Polemic in the Work of Eva Kantůrková

Entwined within the totalitarian system, defined by it through their opposition, Czech dissidents gained what Vaclav Havel has called the power of ‘living in truth’. In a system that was predicated on erasing the individual in the service of the whole and that was bound together by lies and ideology, the power of the dissident was his or her individual ethical action. The ‘definitional others’ that haunted the Soviet state, dissident writers were the ‘conscience of the nation’, to quote a phrase uttered by Jaroslav Seifert in 1956. The loss of these defining boundaries has been difficult for many in the dissident community. Few who lived through the twenty-plus years of cultural deepfreeze known as ‘Normalization’ can escape the Manichean polarities it facilitated. As a result of this and of the profound change that Verdery describes, many Czechs cling to an ‘us against them’ logic as they attempt to understand the new socio-political scene. Thus, many scholars have noted a rise in nationalism in post-socialist countries. As István Rév has argued, the rise in nationalism is a direct result of a collective desire to forget the recent past and place responsibility for it elsewhere: ‘If communism was the deed of outsiders, then the decades of communism could not be part of national history’ (168-69). Šiklova observes that most people cannot endure the complexity of the ‘meaningless present’ and thus they seek new dichotomies.

„Džungle, má lásko“ aneb Prsatý muž a zloděj příběhů Josefa Formánka

Příspěvek se zabývá debutovým románem Josefa Formánka (*1969) Prsatý muž a zloděj příběhů (2003). Třebaže kniha měla poměrně velký komerční úspěch, česká literární kritika jí příliš kladné hodnocení nevystavila. Důvodů, proč tomu tak bylo, je několik. Některé z nich se pokusím pojmenovat a objasnit. Ve svém příspěvku se zaměřím především na 1) nástin východisek Formánkovy tvorby a na její pozici v kontextu české literatury první dekády nového milénia, a na 2) poetickou a narativní analýzu uvedeného románu.

This paper is devoted to the memoir piece of workU Masarykovcov. Spomienky osobnej archivárky T. G.Masaryka, assembled from the diary records of Anna Horáková- -Gašparíková in 1995. The writings depict the last years of the president in office. Unlike most of the memoirs from the era, this particular piece of work displays not only political activities and opinions of the president, but also documents his personal characteristics and authentic opinions and beliefs presented in privacy. As a result of this, the work brings an unique perspective on presidentʼs life. This paper analyzes the work in terms of being a source of new information not only about the presidentʼs personality, but also about the author herself.

ИЛЛЮСТРАЦИИ К РОМАНУ ЙОЗЕФА ВАХАЛА «КРОВАВЫЙ РОМАН»

The relationship between illustrations and text can play a variety of roles and carry a wide range of meanings. Illustrations can visualize the main idea of the text or its literal reading. They can complement or explain the work. Moreover, they can enrich the literary text or fuse with it. The literary text and illustrations make a complex and a coherent whole that is a combination verbal and visual arts. A possible and practical interpretation of the nature of this connection can be found in the novel by Joseph Váchal, Bloody Novel. The illustrations in it are made by the author himself, which allows viewing them as a single semiotic construct in conjunction with the text that, thus, could carry a hidden message that adds a level of meaning to the novel. The book contains approximately 79 xylographic illustrations.

Napätie medzi novým a pôvodným: ekfrastická báseň Not my best side

Od vzpomínek k monografii: Jan Mukařovský o Vladislavu Vančurovi

Nahlédneme-li do bibliografie Jana Mukařovského, zjistíme, že jméno Vladislava Vančury se vyskytuje v jejích třiceti dvou položkách (Macek 1982). Z hlediska žánrové charakteristiky jde o odborné studie, příležitostné články či slavnostní projevy, ale také o nejrůznější anketní odpovědi. Velké množství textových dokumentů o Vančurovi je uloženo rovněž v osobním fondu Jana Mukařovského v Literárním archivu Památníku národního písemnictví v Praze (Ferklová 1999). Jestliže srovnáme počet prací, ve kterých se Mukařovský zabýval Vančurovým dílem a literárními texty ostatních českých spisovatelů (například Karla Hynka Máchy, Vítězslava Nezvala nebo Karla Čapka), je patrné, že Vančurova pozice je zcela mimořádná. Žádnému jinému autorovi Mukařovský nevěnoval takovou pozornost jako jemu. První článek o Vančurově tvorbě přitom publikoval až v roce 1934 (Mukařovský 2001; Poláček a kol. 2000), soustavně pak o jeho díle začal psát až od poloviny čtyřicátých let 20. století.

Vančura v zrcadle knižní ankety Lidových novin

Václav Tille ve svém soukromém deníku glosoval setkání, které 6. dubna 1928 organizovala Alice Masaryková coby předsedkyně Československého červeného kříže: „Alice pozvala dvě šichty žurnalistů na oběd a vykládala jim neustále o významu ‚pohotovosti‘, až z toho byli pitomí. Mimoto si pozvala zvlášť Vančuru se ženou – protože ‚rudí‘ oficiálně na hrad nesmějí – a dvě hodiny do nich mluvila, nevědouc, že Vančura je komunista čistě konjunkturální, který toho využívá prostě k spisovatelské reklamě jako Čapek svého buržouství. Tg [Masaryk] jí zle vyčinil za její dvě minuty míru, takže to už chtěla vše odříci, ale bylo pozdě.“ Václav Tille měl na svůj subjektivní úsudek plné právo: Vladislava Vančuru měl možnost blízce poznat hlavně na podzim roku 1927, kdy spolu s Josefem Koptou a Zdeňkem Nejedlým odcestovali na Sověty organizovaný zájezd do Moskvy. Další kontakty Tilleho s Vančurou už byly pouze příležitostné. Občas se potkali ve vile Tereze na Žižkově, sídle sovětského obchodního zastoupení v Československu, kde byli hoštěni Antonem Antonovem-Ovsejenkem, v roce 1932 byl Tille u Vančurů ve Zbraslavi jednat o filmových záležitostech (Julius Schmidt a Vančura chtěli s Tillem založit filmové studio, ale zůstalo pouze u plánování); jinak je nepojilo žádné hlubší přátelské pouto.
