The aim of this conference paper is the interpretation of Jan Balabán’s literary work through the lens of literary anthropology using sociological theories focused on the evolution of the society in postmodern period (A. Giddens, Z. Bauman). The attention is focused on the family as a value and metaphor of (broken) order, its members and relationships between them. Characters offathers, mothers and siblings are studied based on their symbolical meanings and based on how Balabán’s literary work supports them or on the contrary, calls into question. The mutual development of Czech-Slovak relations naturally led to the emergence of literary works with home as the main theme. The arabesque, Pomněnky z Roztěže by Josef Kajetán Tyl, also falls into the period of 19th century. After the unpleasant relationship experience a Slovak tinker loses the meaning of life and feeling of having a home. Being lonely, he wanders around missing his homeland, thinking of his family, childhood and home village. However, on the mental side, the homeland was represented by his love to Hanka and their future plans. The unfulfilled love is ultimately existentially and personally liquidating for the tinker, who lost his home, understood not only as a physical place.

Kateřina Tučková: roztříštění rodiny vlivem historických událostí, paměť, hledání identity

The present paper deals with Kateřina Tučková’s literary work, concretely with the novels The Expulsion of Gerta (Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch), The Goddesses of Žítková (Žítkovské bohyně) in terms of family memory, relationship decline, narration of personal and family history, confirmation and reproduction of family myths (both presumed and real) and in terms of destructive influence of historical events on families and individuals. The attention is paid to (non-)functional communication, honesty (or alienation) and to (non-)dealing with set up life roles and strategies. Methodologically, this paper is based on studies by M. Castells (Power of Identity), A. Giddens (The Transformation of Intimacy: Love and Eroticism in Modern Societies) and J. Derdowska (Oscillating Mosaic: Urban Space and Literary Work) which can be used for anthropology of literature.

Svět mladých lidí v současné české a ukrajinské próze (román Serhije Žadana Depeš Mod a Jaroslava Rudiše Nebe pod Berlínem)

The writers very often address the basic question of the direction of life, which can be seen in the literature of all countries and times. However, the history and transformations of the society are significantly reflected in the way of looking at human existence. Therefore, this comparative study focuses on the comparison of two authors of contemporary Ukrainian and Czech prose in order to portray the perception of the modern world by young people. The selected novels are closely interconnected by a number of common features: the tendency of pop-literature, the search for one’s own identity in a time of indefiniteness and uncertainty (which is typical for contemporary literature), characters are lost in their ways which lead to nowhere, where a way (depicted as trains and tracks) and losing a home are distinctive images in the authors’ work. Through the exploration of the main characters, their state of mind and thoughts as well as the environment in which they live, we conclude that both the Ukrainian and the Czech writer use their characters to reflect the conscience, nervousness and unease of their generation in the uncertainty of today’s times.

ENGLISH AND CZECH CHILDREN’S LITERATURE: A CONTRASTIVE CORPUS-DRIVEN PHRASEOLOGICAL APPROACH

The paper explores the recurrent linguistic patterns in English and Czech children’s narrative fiction and their textual functions. It combines contrastive phraseological research with corpus-driven methods, taking frequency lists and n-grams as its starting points. The analysis focuses on the domains of time, space and body language. The results reveal register-specific recurrent linguistic patterns which play a role in the constitution of the fictional world of children’s literature, specifying its temporal and spatial characteristics, and relating to the communication among the protagonists. The method used also points out typological differences between the patterns employed in the two languages, and the limitations of the n-gram based approach.

Technika, autonomie a etika: ke stému výročí Čapkova dramatu R.U.R.

Čapek’s drama R.U.R., which is rather a social dystopia than a science fiction (the principle of functioning of robots is not suggested, the drama is focused on the impact on humanity), shows the double face of technology: The dream about the “liberation of work” easily takes a turn for its opposite, and for destruction of humanity in consequence of ruthless utilization of the technological achievement for selfish economical and militaristic interests. „Autonomous technology“, which is not controlled by human aims any more, but by the rules of its own development, became an important subject of philosophy and ethics of technology (e.g. in works by J. Ellul, H. Jonas), and has a warning effect. Today, Industry 4.0 and the process of robotization bring new promises, but also new problems. The legacy of Karel Čapek includes values of humanism and understanding for other people’s views and needs, which is valuable for developing ethics of technology in democratic society.

Robotické bábätká

In the play R.U.R. Karel Čapek envisioned a futuristic society where robots not only take all our jobs, but also all our human vices and virtues. The downfall of humankind is in the end symbolized by the love of and between robots. Love and reproduction are, therefore, one of the main themes of the whole plot of R.U.R. People create robots. Robots create more robots. Robots destruct people. But what if robots could create more humans? This article is focused on the topic of robotic creation of humans. The main line of reasoning is dedicated to the analysis of the near future possibility of autonomous artificial human embryo selection. Current studies show, that AI -assisted pattern recognition provides space for dramatic progress in the effectivity of grading of the viability of embryos. The combination of this technology with other anticipated technologies could one day create prospects for a full robotic reproduction of humans. The article presents some arguments for and against the idea that humans could or should one day become robotic babies.

Rodina a partnerské soužití v současném českém dramatu

The present paper deals with the contemporary Czech drama (plays written after 2000) in terms of thematization of forms of contemporary family, possibilities of partnership and of violation of the borders between these forms. At the same time, it is focused on anxiety of uncertainty which have been brought by these transformations. Methodically, the paper is based on the sociological studies by Manuel Castells, Anthony Giddens and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity. The paper tries, in connection with this concept, to verify the hypothesis that uncertainty can lead to adhering to a tradition pathologically, ignoring disruption of comprehension and loss of freedom.

České a bulharské hudební pohádky

This paper compares a musical Bulgarian fairy tale Prikazka za La Minor (2013, 2014) by A. R. Wagenstein and four Czech fairy tales: Strado & Varius aneb setkání s Mozartem (2002), Strado & Varius (2003), Strado & Varius ve škole Johanna Sebastiana Bacha (2004) and Strado & Varius a léčka Rudého abbé (2005) by M. Skala. Books are classified according to the narrative and the age of readers. They are analysed on several levels. The paper focuses on similarities and differences between the main and supporting characters. It also reflects on the comparison of the time and the space of literary works and motifs from musical history. The paper further consider the theory and didactic function aimed at the small recipient.

Poetika historického románu v dílech W. Scotta (Waverley) a A. Jiráska (Temno)

In the present study we focus on the concept of the historical novel from the point of view of its poetics in two selected works from British and Czech literature. We deal with this genre type in the context of two perspectives: literary morphology and research of surroundings in these two texts. The main point of the study is an analysis, on one side, of the historical novel as the first work and, on the other hand, already famous historical novel in the true sense of the word. The research is based on a comparison of both texts and partially on the genre methodology. The relevant part is the concept of narrative strategy of the work from the aspect of the author. Another significant component is also depicting of the atmosphere and the capturing of the contemporary moment. A part of the article deals with a historiosophical element.

DEATH AS RADICAL BORDER - ABOUT JAN ČEP’S NOVEL THE BORDER OF A SHADOW

The Czech Catholic writer Jan Čep (1902–1974) belonged to the group of authors who built their work on spiritual-religious motifs. Literary critic František Xaver Šalda stated in the bookmark of Čep’s novel The Border of a Shadow (1935) that he is a “poet of death”, namely “a very special, possessing a very special, unusual view of things of life and death”. The language and imagery of his artistic work are based on philosophical-reflexive and meditative lyricism, often with a contemplative overlap. We consider the image of a double home to be one of the key images of Čep’s poetics. Its development can be traced from the author’s juvenile prose work to the latest texts, which are mainly essay-like. In addition to this image, however, in Čep’s work, reflecting on the phenomenon of life and death also appears to be the mainstay, while it is obvious that these entities are very closely related to the image of a double home. In this context, it will be important to observe how the phenomenon of death is depicted in Čep’s only novel The Border of a Shadow.

MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE IN LATE WORKS BY JULIUS ZEYER

Mystical experience is connected with ineffability. This paper proves it in works by various authors. It mentions some common phenomena associated with mysticism, such as stigma, levitation, appearance of light, religious anorexia, etc. Some of them are observed in late works by Julius Zeyer, a Czech novelist and poet, which represent the core of the analysis. Christine the Miraculous and The Three Memoirs of Vít Choráz both reflect mystical experience experienced by the main characters. The paper refers to accompanying aspects of the behaviour of the characters related to ineffable.
