The cultural relations between Serbian poet Simeon Milutinović Sarajlija (1791–1847) and Russia and Russian culture are critically discussed in the first part of this paper, considering a section from Simeon's little known travelogue about Russia published in 1847. The second part of the paper concerns Slavist Alexander Hilferding (1831–1872), the first Russian Consul in Bosnia, the author of Travel around Herzegovina, Bosnia and Old Serbia (1859) and his relations with Serbian culture. A section of this travelogue is presented in the paper. Travelogues belong to the same epoch(XIX century) and they represent a rich historical record on how a famous Serbian sees Russia and how a famous Russian sees Serbian countries. These two travelogues represent an inexhaustible source for various research.

This paper analyses the problems of literary translation of archaisms from Serbian into Italian. Comparative translation analysis of the original novel Dictionary of the Khazars and the two Italian translations of the novel, with the addition of examples of the english translation, questions the adequacy of two translation approaches when transferring archaic expressions from one language into another, namely their transfer from the source culture in the target culture. Considering the fact that Milorad Pavić uses the archaic forms of Serbian words with the purpose of “ageing” the text and achieving a stronger bond between different timelines in his novel, the paper analyses the choices of the two translators to modernise the terms in question and to transfer them into Italian without these specific characteristics. This paper offers an alternative to this procedure, that is the approach of archaising Pavić’s expressions. Using the approach of archaisation, the author’s intention of “ageing” the text would be maintained in the translation, thus also realising a close contact between different temporal dimensions of the novel.

The aim of this publication was to reconstruct the image of God that has been perpetuated in the German language through fixed collocations. Based on a methodological reflection, the author attempted to determine which of God’s attributes are conveyed in these expressions. Attempts were also made to identify the linguistic mechanisms that contributed to that process. The author concluded that the image of God present in German phraseology was clearly consistent with the biblical worldview. In the German language, God is depicted as someone good, just, trustworthy, but sometimes also wrathful and stern. According to the beliefs conveyed by the German language, God dwells in heaven, from which He rules over the world as God almighty. God is portrayed explicitly or implicitly, often through metaphorical and metonymic structures. God’s attributes are frequently portrayed in a language whose modality is full of reverence and supplication and is indicative of man’s dependence on Him, as well as through the use of exclusively adulatory vocabulary.

The aim of this article is to analyze the alcohol addiction of Erwin Sommer, the main character in the novel The Drinker by Hans Fallada. This article focuses solely on his alcohol-related problems, and not on that of his temporary stay in prison or insanatorium. The analysis of Sommer’s alcohol addiction is based not only on literary studies and the biography of the writer but most of all on current medical studies concerning alcoholism. I also compare Erwin Sommer with another classic figure with respect to literature about alcoholism – Jack London and his famous autobiographical novel John Barleycorn. Although the symptoms of alcoholism by Erwin Sommer are actually typical, the aetiology of his alcohol addiction is not so obvious. For this reason, I attempt to discover the real genesis of his disease. The basis of my considerations are, among others, the classification of alcohol disease stages, developed by E. M. Jellinek, the precursor of alcoholism studies, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems ICD-10 created by the World Health Organisation (WHO)and the S3-Guideline, published by the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies, German Society of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Neurology, and German Society of Addiction Studies and Addiction Therapy. In current scientific articles and studies about alcohol-related problems, one can find plenty of details which are very helpful to fully understand Hans Fallada’s life and his fascinating and frightening report about the social, financial and personal fall of a human being.

The main aim of the present paper is to investigate and describe the nature of synaesthetic devices employed by Vladimir Nabokov evident in his letters to his wife – Vera Slonim. The analysis of the language and style of the matrimonial intimate correspondence, written for one reader only, is expected to provide evidence allowing one to establish whether the numerous variants of perceptual synaesthesia employed by Nabokov in all his literary texts reflect his genuine synaesthetic experiences or whether such can only serve as examples of the writer’s passion for creating a kind of perceptual play on words and puzzles.

Individuation is, according to Jung, a process of self-awareness (Selbstwerdung). Martin Pollack’s The Dead Man in the Bunker (2004) is the example of a narrative illustrating the process of individuation. In this book, Pollack presents the fight against the memory of his ancestors – the Nazis and the subsequent stages of the process of his own maturation. This article describes how the narrator expresses himself through literature and how the literary process changes him. The author presents the successive phases of identity building and shows how the process of individuation proceeded depending on these phases. The key thesis of this article is that texts are not only a description of the process, but above all its tool.

This article is an analysis of Tunel (The Tunnel), the novel by Magdalena Parys, a Polish author living in Germany. The action of the book focuses on the fictional construction of an escape tunnel built under the border wall between the western and eastern part of Berlin in the early 1980s. This, somehow, predestines Parys’s work to be read in the context of transgression, and crossing limitations. Starting with the writer’snon-literary inspirations, the article shows the multiplicity of literal and metaphorical meanings of the term “border” and examines how the motif functions in the presented world.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate, based on the example of two Canadian journals, how memory remains alive after the events of 1755, when the deportation of the Acadians took place. In spite of the 250 years which have passed since the event, the French-language press in Canada remains extremely sensitive to the topic of the expulsion of the French from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the British, and it frequently expresses its attachment to the memory of the Acadians.

This paper focuses on the problem of cultural differences with respect to legal terms translation concerning the extradition procedure between Germany and Poland. In this context, the question as to how to tailor German legal terminology referring to institutional and office names to that of the Polish language in order to make the text comprehensible and understandable for Polish readers, e.g., judges, prosecutors or legalrepresentatives, will be considered from a cultural perspective. The study is illustrated by examples from a German prosecutor’s letters to the Polish District Court regarding extradition arrangement.

The present article looks at definitions of “business interpreting”, contrasting them with “community interpreting”, “conference interpreting” and “dialogue interpreting”,with a brief focus on the status quo in Polish sources. A preliminary comparison leads to the conclusion that “business interpreting” does not share two of the most important and distinctive characteristics of community interpreting, namely: the institutional setting and languages of the minority and the majority, along with the unequal relationship it implies. The paper goes on to discuss “dialogue interpreting” (DI) and claims that business interpreting can be seen as DI, with some features of both conference and community interpreting. The article also argues for “business interpreting” to be regarded as a separate, independent type of interpreting.

This paper addresses the problem of translating nonstandard language in contemporary popular fiction. The discussion is based on an adventure novel written by Zygmunt Miłoszewski (Bezcenny) and its English translation produced by Antonia Lloyd-Jones (Priceless). Idiolect of Lisa Tolgfors – one of the protagonists in the story – poses a major challenge to the translator as the character’s language plays a number of roles in the text and, in addition to being properly recognised, its functions ought to be adequately reproduced in the target text. To analyse the extent to which the translator has succeeded in reconstructing the idiolect, its different functions in the source text have been determined. The comparison of the nonstandard language that is formed in the ST and recreated in the TT has revealed that even though certain functions have beensuccessfully recreated, the idiolect is – to a large extent – normalised, the consequence of which is the aesthetic impoverishment that can, additionally, contribute to a different perception of the character by Polish and English readers of that novel.

In the twentieth century, the understanding of the complexity of language and cultural relations, the semiotic approach to the trinity of language, national identity and culture, laid the foundation for the emergence of a new direction in linguistics. Because the connection between "language and culture" began to be understood as "man and culture" in the context of a broader problem. After the adoption of language as both a means of cultural expression and an indicator of its impact on culture, the linguocultural approach to the study of language units became one of the most pressing issues in linguistics. The content of linguocultural research covers the study of people's lifestyles and traditions in language, as well as analyzes it in diachronic, comparative, regional, conceptual, experimental, synergetic aspects. A complete description of language structures, the definition of a complete and complete "image of language" is impossible without touching on linguocultural problems. The article examines the interaction of language and cultural factors, national-cultural and cultural-linguistic features, the relationship between their universals, the concept of language and cultural code, and other issues.

In the humanitarian field, conventional institutions and existing institutes of knowledge give place to the paradoxical experience of knowing the obvious reality by means of art. This non-discursive experience does not have access to the sphere of linguistic forms and paradigms; however, it receives a logistic embodiment in the word that can be heard in real time. It is the task of phenomenological linguistics to learn the motives and reflexes of the invaluable experience of a person’s meeting with the true reality embodied in the living word. The article addresses the issue of the orthodox inconsistency of traditionallinguistics in understanding linguistic essences. Phenomenology paves the way for an antinomical study of the language, supplementing the existing paradigms of analysis with its characteristic principles. In the light of the principle of simultaneity, the meaning of derivations characteristic of linguistic creativity becomes accessible, not excludingmythology.
