"In the Lublin Region, the key word is the border: we are right next to Belarus and Ukraine, between the Vistula and the Bug. The diversity of this area (manifested by Orthodox churches and synagogues as well as Armenian and Tatar traces) finds its reflection in the multiplicity of topics considered in the volume. The authors and editors of the volume (comprising ethnologists, anthropologists, philologists, geographers and economists) treat cultural area studies presented as a vehicle allowing the reader to imagine the space of the Lublin Region, where the West meets the East. Analysing the Region’s historical and cultural resources, the authors drew a broken circle, going from Biała Podlaska, through Włodawa, Hrubieszów, Zamość, Zwierzyniec, Biłgoraj, Janów Lubelski, Kraśnik, Opole Lubelskie, Kazimierz Dolny, Puławy to Łuków. These margins of the Lublin Region have become for them, to use bell hooks’s formulation, a place of radical opening" (from the introduction).

The book has developed and tested models of measuring devices with accelerometers and gyroscopes. These models were used to synthesize algorithms for co-processing of measurements from GPS receiver and INS. Tests of noise resistance and accuracy of synthesized algorithms have been made. The results of the research prove that the algorithms work steadily and provide the necessary precision. The book consists of three parts. The first part analyzes the navigation systems used onboard biplane aircraft. In the second part is synthesis and analysis of algorithms for joint processing of measurements by INS and GPS. In the third part the synthesized algorithms for joint processing of the measurements under the operating conditions are analyzed.

The publication presents an analysis of variability of physical and mechanical properties of Warsaw ice-dammed deposits. In this study, the engineering geological properties were correlated with the lithogenetic types of varved clays representing sedimentary zones of glaciolacustrine lake. The advanced tools for in situ soil characteristics were used. The research programme focused on the glaciolacustrine varved clays formed during the Last Glaciation (Vistulian). With the use of innovative, non-conventional methods, the stress state was verified and anisotropy of selected mechanical characteristics was determined. A comprehensive data set covers various parameters. It is the basis for establishing representative values of the studied soils taking into account their facial differentiation.

The first Polish critical edition of Georg Joachim Rheticus’ Narratio Prima (First Account), the treatise on heliocentric astronomy, written in Frauenburg (Frombork), where Rheticus spent two years with Copernicus, and published in Danzig (Gdańsk), in 1540. Georg Joachim Rheticus is known in the history of science as the only disciple of Copernicus and the man, who played a vital part in publishing Copernicus’ revolutionary work De revolutionibus, which was to become the foundation for modern science. In 1540 the world first heard about the heliocentric theory of Nicolaus Copernicus. Paradoxically enough, this revolution in astronomy was announced not by Copernicus himself but by Georg Joachim Rheticus, a young Lutheran mathematician of Wittenberg, who published the First Account of the Books “On the Revolutions” by Nicolaus Copernicus. His book preceded the publication of Copernicus’ De revolutionibus by three years and became one of the most fascinating texts documenting the life and work of the great Polish astronomer. Rheticus wrote the Narratio prima in Lubawa where he stayed with Copernicus.

The book entitled “Contemporary challenges of spatial planning in tourism destinations” compares the different contexts for spatial planning and how they approach tourism-related issues in selected European countries, namely Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Turkey. Each chapter starts with a presentation of the overall profile of the investigated country. The chapters then consider the following contexts of spatial planning of tourism destinations: legal regulations of spatial planning, long-term strategy for spatial planning, public participation in spatial planning, and the main challenges of spatial planning of tourism destinations. The publication ends with an overarching discussion focusing on the various challenges that affect sustainable spatial planning of tourism destinations in the countries under consideration. The book was edited by Tomasz Napierała and Katarzyna Leśniewska-Napierała (both from University of Lodz), and Giancarlo Cotella (Politecnico di Torino). The monograph contains the results of research devoted to determining the vulnerability of passenger road transport in Poland by identifying the nature and scale of changes in transport accessibility and changes in the network traffic load in the event of a flood (with different probabilities of occurrence), conducted under the project number 2018/29/B/HS4/01020, financed by the National Science Center in Poland. In the course of the implementation of such formulated main goal of the study, an attempt was made to achieve a group of specific objectives of a cognitive, methodological and application character. The research was conducted mainly on the basis of data on the extent of flood risk areas in Poland and their development, as well as the road network and the development of its neighborhood. The publication may be of interest to researchers dealing with the geography of transport or – more broadly – with socio-economic geography and spatial management. It can also be helpful material for students of study programs that relate to the geography of transport, transport accessibility or spatial mobility in their curriculum. The content of the thesis covers issues that can be used by specialists in crisis management or road infrastructure management in crisis situations related to the occurrence of a flood.
