Venice, a great naval force and the most important intermediary between the East and the West, had to defend its interests in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean from the increasing powers of Hungary. Venice had already fought king Ludwig in order to defend its cities in Dalmatia (1344-1348 and 1356-1358) but rather unsuccessfully. By signing the Zadar peace, Venice renounced Dalmatia, and was not allowed to claim property over lands on the Adriatic coast, from Kvarner to Drac.
