The activity of the Federation of Expellees (German: Bund der Ver triebenen, BdV) and its chairperson Erika Steinbach, including efforts aimed at establishing the Centre Against Expulsions1 (ZgV) have been and will continue to be a source of controversy in Germany’s domestic policy, as well as in Polish–German and Czech–German relations. Steinbach has become a central figure in German inter-party conflicts and in disputes with the country’s immediate neighbours. In her efforts to gain more publicity for injustice and suffering in the German past she has resorted to controversial methods and has thus latched onto another stage in the historical debate on the consequences of World War II. This time it is related to and interpreted from the point of view of the German victims.

Populism is a term which has become established in the public consciousness. It has become a part of the rhetoric (as a form of attack) of political players and has also found a firm place in academic debates. This is despite the fact, or perhaps because, that a generally accepted and heuristically seamless concept of populism does not exist. The term populism somehow carries an automatic negative connotation. Party leaders are accused of populism, proposed solutions to political problems are attacked by their opponents as populist and, as such, summarily rejected. Populism in the public as well as journalistic discourse has in many cases become synonymous – as we describe in the theoretical chapter of this book – with demagoguery or rhetorical statements full of empty promises.

With its diverse range of topics and expert contributors, the “Global Atlas of Refugees and Asylum Seekers” is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the complexities of global migration and the policies that shape the lives of those seeking refuge.“The authors of this book identify two main paradigms shaping states’ narratives regarding asylum seekers and refugees. Along the horizontal axis, discourses range from national security to humanitarian aid. On the vertical axis, they extend from the pursuit of ideals, as traditionally defined for refugees and asylum seekers, to personal survival due to economic, climate-related crises, family violence, gender violence, or organized crime. This shift, as highlighted in the chapter on Germany by Professor Knerr, is altering the original vision of agreements that stemmed from post-World War II Europe. Finally, the rise of populist and authoritarian states in Latin America, which cannot be solely explained by repressive authoritarianism but rather create conditions of difficult survival for their nationals, is exerting additional pressures. Additionally, religiously motivated civil wars, such as those in Afghanistan, Iran, and Syria, pose complex challenges. Should countries reconsider the principles on which they are acting?Less obvious is the role of migration and refugee policies in influencing asylum seekers’ choice of their future destination. Many authors mention support networks and family ties as factors influencing refugees and asylum seekers’ decisions to leave their countries and select their destination. However, it remains unclear whether these networks operate in the same capacity as support networks for irregular migrants. Many chapters raise issues that have received little attention, primarily because of the focus on refugees and asylum seekers as agents. These issues include the reasons prompting the decision to leave one’s country of origin, who must leave, the influence of family or social support networks on this decision, their role in selecting possible settlement locations, and the role of civil society organizations in supporting and guiding these decisions. This is especially crucial considering that unaccompanied children represent 30-35% of asylum applicants. The chapters in this Global Atlas provide an overview of refugee and asylum regimes to enhance understanding and better plan for the ongoing and future challenges of human mobility.”

The volume addresses important issues of Polish-Slovenian intercultural dialogue and its multifaceted nature. It has been divided into five parts, each dealing with a different type of relationship and often deepening and supplementing previous reflection on the subject. Some texts, moreover, uncover areas of Polish-Slovenian dialogue that are still completely unknown. The first part deals with direct Polish-Slovenian contacts, experiences that constitute a biographical feature and are related to various types of wanderings. The authors of the texts collected in the second part present intertextual relations in the sphere of themes and literary structures between Polish and Slovenian writers. In the next part, the authors' attention is focused on literary translations, which are an important manifestation of Polish-Slovenian and Slovenian-Polish intercultural dialogue and are an expression of the need to bring the two cultures closer together and to translate them through the medium of literature. The intercultural dialogue at the level of linguistic structures, content and expression, is described in the articles collected in the next part of the volume. The last part is devoted to the sphere of education, promotion of the language and culture of both countries, cooperation in the field of higher education or selected aspects of language policy in higher education in Poland and Slovenia. The volume Polish-Slovenian Intercultural Dialogue is the outcome of the first exclusively Slovenian academic conference in Poland and in the world devoted to cultural contacts between Poland and Slovenia.

The Katowice conurbation had taken shape beginning with the end of the 18th century in the borderlands of two states, Poland and Germany. In this sense, it was an area situated on the peripheries of both countries. Permanent and dynamic interactions between different national-ethnic groups resulted in cultural intermingling. Beginning with the middle of the 20th century, this complex settlement system was already at the centre of socio-economic development on a supra-regional scale. As a result of multidirectional migration, influenced by intensive industrialisation, social relations evolved between the migrants and the local (indigenous) population, as well as between the migrants themselves. The aim of this study is to analyse the early multicultural nature of selected cities in the Katowice conurbation against a methodological and terminological background and to indicate the extent to which this feature might be an asset in present-day socio-economic transformations in this area. The temporal and spatial overlapping of various origins of socio-cultural links and relations leads the author to formulate the concepts of cultural genotype and primary and secondary cultural genotype, and to exemplify the formation of cultural genotypes in the Katowice conurbation.

“In this book, we have named the phenomena neoreligion and reactivation. Neoreligion does not mean a change inside institutionalised religion, it does not correspond to some kind of dogmatic creative crisis, which would bring established religious groups to claim to create something new while only dusting out ancient components of their religion. It is not to confuse, either, with some kind of religious nostalgia, a desire to return to the origins or foundations of a religion. Such a dynamic can be observed with the born-again phenomena – obvious in the spheres of monotheistic religions – that is individual religious revivalism of people who are often searching for a supposedly original orthodoxy.Neoreligion, on the contrary, is the phenomenon where, outside existing religions, new religions are created, but not from nothing: they are reactivated in a new form. They take their roots – or at least claim to do so – in traditional or ancient beliefs and adopt some of the imagined traditional behaviours. The movement, therefore, is one of transformation, since it is a takeover of the old. But this change does not simply follow the logic of the old: there is also a dimension of novelty, of creation. This volume is dedicated to studying these phenomena: describing and analysing their various appearances, uncovering their logic and dynamics, shedding light on the motivations of followers, and discussing their consequences.”

The costume is the daily national clothing of a Bulgarian from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The Bulgarian costume is a visualization of identity. Through the folk costume, we get a representation of the life of our ancestors. It is a daily wear, but by adding various artistic elements - decorations to the daily wear, it turns into a festive wear. The costume is worn by both men and women, it is specific and distinctive for each of the Bulgarian ethnographic regions. After the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, the influence of urban clothing was visible, and the costume began to be worn less often. Today, costumes are used in artistic self-activity, in applied crafts and art, there is also a trend of weaving artistic elements and ornaments from costumes into modern clothing. Vasil Kolev's textbook "Palette of Pirin and Ograzhden costumes" presents the results of a three-year research project, conducted in the form of an ethnographic expedition, organized by a distinguished teacher Georgi Hristov at the PG "Yane Sandanski" in the city of Sandanski, and gives the young generation the opportunity to get to know, research and analyze the beauty and messages of Pirin and Ograden costumes. More than 60 participants in the "Meeting of Costumes" festival present the costumes they searched for, and Georgi Hristov collects them in an album. Vasil Kolev's contribution is that he gives new life to the collected materials through their digitization and the possibility of their reaching students, researchers, and the general public.
