The present work describes the underlying principles of the 2002 Basic Roman Spelling of English [4] aimed at providing an alternative English orthography for international usage. This has been developed by Lyubomir Ivanov, who introduces here a new construction for that system, and proposes a closely related Roman phonetic alphabet to be used for the pronunciation respelling of English without special characters or diacritics. A comparison is made with Interspel [11], a system developed by Valerie Yule that attempts to maximize the advantages and remove the disadvantages of traditional spelling of English, to benefit learners, users and international communication.

The naive picture of space and the generally accepted present-day scientific understanding of the problem show considerable similarity as demonstrated by a comparison of a limited group of linguistic items - phraseological units expressing emotions (including somatisms) in Bulgarian and Polish. The ‘physical portrait’ of space revealed in those phraseological units is made up of features accepted as prototypical in modem science: movement and its forms, variability and stability, metric properties. Nevertheless, the two languages conceptualize the common experience of the two nations in a different way depending on their structural properties. Language has a leading role in shaping the concept of space.

The common special referent of source language metaphorical terms and their target language translation equivalents is proposed as convenient tertium comparationis for contrastive analysis of these terminological items. The special referent is determined as a partially conceptualised unnamed special reference concept which can serve as a basis for interlingual comparison within a combined experientialist-terminological approach to terminological metaphorisation. The tertium comparationis thus defined for the particular object of investigation is a solid foundation to construct a proper model for contrasting metaphorical terms with their equivalents.

The paper discusses uncontroversial pragmatic principles like the cooperative principle and the principle of politeness as well as controversial ones like the principle of relevance, the perlocutionary cooperative principle, the principle of local interpretation and the principle of analogy. Arguments are provided for and against the proliferation of the principles. Considerations are presented for the redundancy of three principles: the perlocutionary cooperative principle, the principle of local interpretation and the principle of analogy.
