Summary/Abstract: This article examines the role of the conjunction ami in the Bulgarian colloquial speech. Attention is paid to its frequent use in informal communication in structures that are a typical feature of the oral communication (anacoluthon, frame constructions, interrogative remarks, uncommunicative utterances, etc). With numerous examples is noted its wide distribution in Bulgarian dialects and its presence in Bulgarian literary works. Probably the use of the conjunction ami in different parts of the Bulgarian linguistic territory (eastern, western, transitional and border territory), and its wide dissemination in fiction literature are the main prerequisite for the full and the various functioning of ami in the speech of representatives of the intelligentsia in unofficial and informal situations.
