Summary/Abstract: There is always a specific way in which an artist reveals her or his inner life through art. The specific way of German novelist Thomas Mann is revealing things that matter by means of covering or dissimulating them. This paper deals with the techniques of narrative dissimulation used by Thomas Mann, namely irony- a deliberate withdrawal from overwhelming issues in order to maintain the appearance of unaffected autonomy-, the double points of view or the narrative technique of poly-perspective, by means of which nothing seems unambiguous and may be interpreted in many ways and dissimulation by playing the part of an unexpected character. Besides analysing these techniques, the reason why the author tended to use them is also discussed.
