New approaches to assessment in Science and Social studies teaching

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the process of assessment in Science and social studies teaching, its basic dimensions, perspectives and opportunities. Formative forms of evaluation, which in the context of reform changes in contemporary education, are gaining increasing prominence and role, are particularly emphasized. In addition to basic terminological definitions of terms important for understanding the quality of the assessment process, this paper also discusses the challenges that arise during the assessment process, as well as the importance of aligning the assessment process with all other elements of the teaching. Examples of specific templates for implementing formative assessment (assessment for learning and assessment as learning) of students inquiry skills and their participation in projects and for evaluation of competences acquired through collaborative learning in school subject Science and Social studies. Also, the paper gives suggestions and description of contemporary formative evaluation strategies in this school subject.
