Summary/Abstract: Pre-conference collection Slavic literary world: contexts and confrontations I. consists of 25 studies of PhD students from 15 institutes of Slavonic 5 European countries, written in five languages. Young authors have focused their attention rather to less common issues of literary research within the wide thematic range of conference bringing the new impulse to the contemporary state and tendencies of research work and at least partly illustrating the potential and directing of the younger generation of literary researches. However in the publication there are also present the papers of authors contributing by their genuine research perspective to the continuous academic discourse about more traditional literary issues. Many works are not methodologically and thematically strictly limited just to the field of literature, but they overlap to related fields as the fine arts, aesthetics or translate studies are.

- Summary/Abstract:Although the term “vampire” and the earliest legends about these creatures are considered these days to be of eastern origin, Slavonic culture and vampires appear to have many connections. “Slavic vampires” have a less pronounced sexual aspect, which is important in many classic vampire stories, and, instead, deal more with the concept of a “bad death” and the disease/illness category. This paper is an attempt to examine the shape and anthropological meanings of vampire figures in Polish literary texts.

- Summary/Abstract:Ota Filip, in his novel Valdštýn and Lukrecie, creates a character of the disillusioned scientist, Martin, whose desire is to achieve initiation by searching for a historical figure with whom he can successfully compare himself. Albrecht Valdštýn becomes such a figure; however, in the process of comparison, it is revealed who in fact deserves initiation. This paper focuses on the last stage of the process—gaining of power—in both cases. Storytelling structure and ideological discourse based on the works of Hyden White in both narrative lines of the novel are also analyzed. The main goal is to examine the conditions of the right to power in the context of initiation of main characters, Valdštýn and Lukrecia.

- Summary/Abstract:The importance of the travelogue genre in Slavonic literature is indisputable. Social developments in 19th century, which were one of the consequences of industrial revolution, included the emergence of traveling as a leasure activity. It became more accessible to masses, which is reflected in literature of the time by an increased writers’ interest in the travelogue genre. The aim of this paper is to examine the social and cultural situation around and its influence on the creation of the first Slovak travelogue by a female writer, Pani Georgiadesová na cestách (Mrs Georgiades traveling) subtitled Veselý cestopis do Prahy na národopisnú výstavu (Cheerful travelogue to Prague to the ethnographic exhibition) and to define specific means used by the author, Terézia Vansová, that enrich and modify the characteristics of the contemporary travelogue genre. Furthermore, this work focuses on the influence of Vansovaʼs work and its links to contemporary Slovak literature. This approch allows comparing Vansovaʼs travelogue with similar contemporary literary works and pointing out the connections that indicate a close relationship with the Czech and Slovak literature of the period.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims to examine Sławomir Mrożek’s Tango and Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. Both plays explore the concept of intelligentsia, its role and condition in a postmodern society. Although these plays were written at different periods, they have the same motives of rebellion and conformity. Both texts challenge the conventions of bourgeois drama. Both plays convey an ideological message by criticizing totalitarianism and its influence on society and an individual. Furthermore, popular culture and music that are present in both plays reflect the social and cultural changes of 20th century. Tango and Rock ‘n’ Roll became symbols of a certain culture and ideology. The comparative study of the two plays is aimed at examining such their similarities as, for example, the rise and fall of communist regime in Central Europe.

- Summary/Abstract:The relationship between illustrations and text can play a variety of roles and carry a wide range of meanings. Illustrations can visualize the main idea of the text or its literal reading. They can complement or explain the work. Moreover, they can enrich the literary text or fuse with it. The literary text and illustrations make a complex and a coherent whole that is a combination verbal and visual arts. A possible and practical interpretation of the nature of this connection can be found in the novel by Joseph Váchal, Bloody Novel. The illustrations in it are made by the author himself, which allows viewing them as a single semiotic construct in conjunction with the text that, thus, could carry a hidden message that adds a level of meaning to the novel. The book contains approximately 79 xylographic illustrations.

- Summary/Abstract:Symbolism, as part of the Modernism movement that tends to separate itself from the present for the sake of the future, seeks to renovate the culture by going to back the roots. Interestingly, members of the Symbolist Movement in both Russia and Italy expressed great interest in ancient social history and personal biography texts. In their cultural models, which I propose to call regressive, symbolists viewed early periods in history and their culture as the most authentic, sincere and unique. These models can be classified in the following way: regressive (infantile) models of the creative genius nature (Il Fanciullino by Pascoli and Kotik Letaev by Andrei Bely) and regressive models of theater that transforms into the ancient mystery (Vyacheslav Ivanov).

Namely, to compare her diary My Children with Dostoyevskyʼs Diary of a Writer. The focus of the study is on the genesis, composition, genre and themes in both diaries. It is hoped that similarities in terms of their genre, compositional individuality, themes and biographical connections between Šoltésová and Dostoyevsky can be discovered.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper deals with contemporary South Slavic superhero characters in comics. First, general characteristics of the classic superhero genre (which is the most popular comic genre) are analyzed. Special attention is payed to the South Slavic comic book production, typical characteristics (superpowers, a mission, etc.) of a superhero as well as to some optional story elements (e.g., a sidekick). And second, certain local cultural contexts that shape the South Slavic superhero characters are discussed. What is important is that superheroes are the embodyment of myths and stereotypes that enrich the superhero genre in a unique way. The variety of the South Slavic superhero comic characters opens up new perspectives for the Slavic cultural studies in the Balkans.

For example, for Raskoľnikov (Crime and Punishment), Rudin (Rudin) and Nekhlyudov (Ressurrection) these means are monologues, interior monologues and dialogues. This article examines differencies between the authorsʼ approaches to self-expression and their influence on the depth of the characters’ inner worlds.

- Keywords:translation of fiction; dialect; Bulgarian language; translation methods;
- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims to examine a literary text from the translatology and stylistics perspective. When translating fiction, literary studies and stylistics inevitably come into contact. Problems, however, arise when it comes to translating dialect elements. This issue has been extensively studied, but, when it comes to practice, every translator has a freedom to choose a method and justify it. To analyze this phenomenon, short stories by J. Radichkov, a Bulgarian author, and their Czech translations have been chosen. The use of literary dialect in Radichkov’s works differs from the typical conveying of the local atmosphere. In his works, literary dialect itself becomes a stylistic feature that is worth exploring, especially in Czech translation.

- Summary/Abstract:Božana Apostolova, a famous Bulgarian writer, has created a series of the literary fairy tales, Malkata Božana, and dedicated it to her granddaughter. Unlike folk tales, which are characterized by temporal and local uncertainties, these fairy tales reflect the modern-day social and cultural reality, the progress of civilisation and its negative aspects. This paper focuses on space descriptions as a component of the fictional universe, an aspect in which all five books vary significantly. For the in-depth analysis, the book was chosen in which the author uses two approaches to space description, Малката Божана в деня на боклуците (2012).

Because of his bipolar disorder, he resists the broken system and submits to it at the same time. This paradoxical behaviour is seen as typical of people who grew up under the communist regime. Drinking is for him an attempt to escape the suffering brought by the Soviet system: Venichka js trying to save his soul and ideals. On one hand, he is too weak to fight the system in earnest, and, on the other hand, he cannot fully agree with it and become a devoted servant of the state. In the end, he is defeated and killed.

- Summary/Abstract:For Bruno Schulz, a Polish writer of Jewish descent, myths are the point of departure in creation of his works. It is impossible to imagine a collection of his stories that does not dabble in myth in one way another. Indeed, the primal mythical world forms the basis of his writings. Mythical narrative of the inception points to the existence of ideal primordial state. This state unifies the human being and the universe. In his work, Schulz constantly goes back to his childhood. From that period of his life, he borrows basic schemes and imagery for his work. He creates his own mythology and space-time relationships from these images.

- Summary/Abstract:Niedobra miłość (Bad love) is a novel by Zofia Nałkowska, a Polish writer. It tells the story of a love triangle between a young married couple and a friend of the female protagonist. When Agnieszkaʼs husband starts cheating on her, she develops a kind of neurosis and depression and, as a result, is unable to function normally or go about her life as she used to. The situation developments are followed and commented on by the inhabitants of a small provincional town somewhere in Poland where the story takes place. The novel offers several readings: a psychological portait of an abandoned woman who is still deeply in love, a semi-autobiographical narrative of Nałkowska’ life (based on her diaries), a socio-cultural novel about the post-World War I Poland or as an example of womenʼs writing.
