- Summary/Abstract:The significance of empathy for professionals in helping professions, as well as for those on the path to becoming such professionals, has long been recognized as a crucial and integral component in the helping process. As the foundation of successful social interventions, empathy enables practitioners to establish authentic relationships with clients and gain a deeper understanding of their needs, sufferings, and challenges. Although empathy is a fundamental competence in social work, its prevalence has been neglected, even somewhat forgotten, and the effects of its application in practice remain underexplored. This paper focuses on the theoretical understanding of the concept itself, an analysis of contemporary approaches to understanding and developing empathy, an assessment of professionals’ capacities, and its practical effects. In a time of rapid social changes and increasing digitalization, empathy has become one of the most essential, yet most threatened, competencies in helping professions. Recent research on the impact of digitalization on human relationships points to the challenges that technology poses in the development of empathy. Analyzing the effects of digital communication on interpersonal skills and social interaction can provide valuable insights into how modern societies shape individuals’ ability to cultivate empathy. While many contemporary authors warn about environmental risks as threats to empathy development, others highlight the benefits that modern technology can offer. A special focus is placed on educating social workers and those on the path to becoming such, in developing this important skill. Empathy is not a static trait; it develops through education, personal and professional experience, and particularly through practice. Of course, it is important to bear in mind that excessive emotional involvement without clear boundaries can lead to burnout, while a lack of empathy reduces the professional’s ability to effectively assist clients. Therefore, this is an important opportunity to confront these challenges and redefine empathy as a dynamic and necessary skill, not only for social workers but for society as a whole. At a time when solidarity and humanity are more needed than ever, empathy remains a fundamental strength that can guide us through the most difficult societal challenges.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper examines the scientific and professional aspects of counseling provided by counselors and psychotherapists to students within the higher education system. The paper explores key concepts and distinctions between counseling and psychotherapy in individual practice. Various organizations and institutions offer counseling services, such as family centers, social welfare centers, hospitals, health care centers, associations, and educational providers, including primary and secondary schools, higher education institutions, as well as labor market and employment stakeholders. From a legislative standpoint, counseling is regarded as a professional activity and social service, which should be considered to ensure quality support to children, youth, and adults facing personal challenges and life adversities. In the higher education system, counseling serves as an important form of formal social support provided to students throughout their studies and subsequent enrollment in postgraduate and doctoral programs, as well as indirectly throughout lifelong learning. This form of formal support helps young people navigate the challenges of studying and address issues related to family, health, leisure, and balancing between work responsibilities with their role as students. In conclusion, the paper presents contemporary theoretical and scientific insights into counseling practices with the student population, reflecting on the counselor-client (student) relationship and the role of counselors in the counseling process.

- Summary/Abstract:In contemporary society, psychosocial support and counseling represent significant links in addressing psychosocial problems and difficulties. Despite this, there is a noted insufficient response to treatment due to deeply rooted stereotypes and prejudices against professionals, stigma, and a lack of awareness regarding the benefits of counseling work. Considering that students in Bosnia and Herzegovina are a vulnerable group, this study examined the experiences, attitudes, and awareness of students at the University of Sarajevo regarding psychosocial assistance and counseling. Through a questionnaire, 200 students were surveyed about their knowledge of mental health, their attitudes, and experiences in seeking professional help for psychosocial issues. The data indicate that respondents generally hold positive attitudes toward professional assistance in the form of counseling and/or psychotherapy, yet simultaneously display relatively low willingness to seek such help, along with a marked indifference toward stigma. This work may provide insight into students’ experiences and readiness to seek professional support through psychosocial assistance and counseling to overcome life challenges. The findings from this research can serve as guidelines for stakeholders in promoting improvements in students’ quality of life, aiming to strengthen and enhance the accessibility of professional support through psychosocial assistance and counseling.

- Summary/Abstract:The challenges of improving multidisciplinary cooperation are a significant prerequisite for successful action in the area of mental health protection for children and adolescents. Multidisciplinarity means that, to a certain extent, the competences and responsibilities of different institutions are shared when dealing with children and adolescents with impaired mental health. If all members of the multidisciplinary team adequately use the expertise they possess, the needs of children and adolescents with impaired mental health will be met, and they will additionally influence the improvement of the quality of life of children and adolescents. With a multidisciplinary approach in treatment, we jointly provide an understanding of the mentioned population with the responsibility of all participants who work with children. Cooperation is necessary during the application of a multidisciplinary approach, but it is also complex because it includes different management policies and actions within institutions, procedures, support and time that is necessary in working with children and adolescents. Professionals who work with children with impaired mental health in the healthcare system are neuropsychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses. Due to their wide range of knowledge and experience, social workers can improve the practices of providing support, prevention and improving the mental health of children and adolescents who, due to various circumstances, are hospitalized or appear for preventive examinations in the outpatient clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry. The aim of this paper is to show the role of a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of children and adolescents during their stay in the health care system, to give an insight into the difficulties that experts face during their work (Centers for Social Work, Centers for Mental Health, Non-Governmental Organizations, competent Ministries) and the resources that experts recognize as the most important in working with children and adolescents with impaired mental health. The increased risk for the development of mental health problems in children and adolescents indicates the need for additional research and development of multidisciplinary services for this population. The role of the competent neuropsychiatrist and social worker in the health care system for the mental health of children and adolescents is reflected primarily in the networking of institutions that work together to improve the living conditions of children and adolescents, then the promotion of mental health, the prevention of mental disorders, the provision of support during the recovery process and the social inclusion of persons with mental health difficulties in the local community, and the elimination of discrimination and stigmatization of children and adolescents with mental health difficulties.

- Summary/Abstract:During the developmental transition, young individuals face challenges related to taking responsibility for themselves, leaving their family of origin, developing intimate relationships with peers, differentiating the self, and establishing a degree of independence. Self-differentiation is a developmental process that begins in early childhood and progresses through adolescence, and it can be a crucial variable influencing how young people shape their behavior, which directly affects their quality of life. Greater self-differentiation leads to higher interpersonal competence, emotional maturity, and lower psychological stress, enabling better modulation of emotional arousal experienced during challenging interpersonal situations. It involves the ability to balance two factors: emotional and intellectual influences on cognitive functioning, as well as intimacy and autonomy in relationships. Bowen’s theory emphasizes the importance of understanding emotional dynamics within the nuclear family, how these patterns are transmitted across generations, and highlights the role of differentiation in managing emotional fusion and the various mechanisms families use to cope with internal stress and anxiety. By recognizing these patterns, individuals and therapists can contribute to reducing their negative impact on family members, especially children and young people. Bowen’s family systems theory is a valuable form of therapy for families, couples, and individuals. Helping individual members and systems increase their basic self-differentiation is one of the important goals of family systems therapy. Through this work, we aim to highlight the possible effects of counseling and therapeutic treatment in family systems therapy on increasing the level of self-differentiation.

- Summary/Abstract:Adolescence is one of the most challenging developmental periods in a person’s life. During this time, young people undergo psychological and physical changes that are demanding for both the young individuals and their parents and teachers. In this period, relationships between young people and adults, especially with parents and teachers, become quite complex, leading to much dissatisfaction among youth. This can manifest through various ineffective behaviors and psychological difficulties. This paper will present the development of a mental health protection program for children and youth in Visoko, which began in 2022. under the name “Children’s and Youth Festival ‘What I Need, Hear Me, and Get Involved.’” The program originated from psychological counseling and psychotherapeutic work with children and youth at the Mental Health Center in Visoko and is based on psychological developmental theories and William Glasser’s Choice Theory. The program has been developed, refined, and implemented for three years in Visoko, involving students from all elementary and high schools, their teachers, professors, parents, as well as students and professors from other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Summary/Abstract:Over the past 20 years, we have witnessed a significant expansion of the gambling industry, accompanied by the growing phenomenon of gambling and betting availability and accessibility. Availability is explained as the possibility of gambling and betting, while accessibility refers to the ease of entering the game in relation to proximity, time, and age restrictions. Vices industries vary in how open their markets are, with most being regulated by legal frameworks. Despite regulations aimed at limiting minors’ access to these vice industries, research shows that gambling-related problems are not uncommon among youth. During adolescence, engaging in risky behaviors is not unusual, often spurred by peer pressure and the need for self-affirmation. Gambling problems can lead to serious consequences, including strained interpersonal relationships, delinquent behavior, legal issues, the development of depression, and in some cases, even suicidal tendencies. As a result, there is a growing need for a deeper understanding of this problem and the development of effective interventions that can help reduce it. The aim of this paper is to provide theoretically and empirically based information on the problem of gambling among youth and present interventions aimed at addressing it. Additionally, the paper seeks to raise awareness about the importance of this issue and encourage further interest among professionals and the general public.
