Summary/Abstract: U povijestima hrvatske književnosti posebno mjesto pripada fra Matiji Divkoviću (1563–1631), utemeljitelju franjevačke i bosanskohercegovačke književnosti, autoru prvih tiskanih knjiga na narodnom jeziku i ujedno prvih djela na području današnje Bosne i Hercegovine ostvarenih što kavskom stilizacijom hrvatskoga književnog jezika. Divković svoja prva djela Nauk krstjanskiza narod slovinski (tzv. veliki Nauk) i Sto čudesa aliti zlamen’jablažene i slavne Bogorodice, Divice Marije objavljuje u Veneciji 1611. u tiskari Pietra M. Bertana i to na bosančici za koju jesam osmišljavao grafijska rješenja i lijevao slova. Svoje tiskarsko iskustvo Divković primjenjuje i pet godina kasnije kada ponovno lijeva slova i kod istog tiskara 1616. objavljuje još dva djela kojasu doživjela znatno veću popularnost: Besjede svrhu evanđel’ja nedjeljnijeh priko svega godišta (2. izdanje 1704) i Nauk krstjanskis mnozijemi stvari duhovnijemi i vele bogoljubnijemi (tzv.mali Nauk) koji je do 1738. godine objavljen dvadesetak puta i to u dvije inačice: opsežnoj i kratkoj.

- Summary/Abstract:Almost by necessity as a belated response to the Reformation and out of need to reform the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent (1545–1563) first dealt with defining the disputed truths of faith: the understanding of the Holy Gospel, mercy and acts of redemption, and the sacraments. With reformers’ revocation of intercession through the Church, Pope, bishops,priests, and those opposed to conciliarism in second place, the Council of Trent concentrated on bishop reforms and the liturgical and religious life of the local churches and parishes, along with the catholization of colonized and missionary territories. As rarely any council in history has done,the Council of Trent contributed to Catholic universalization, which some authors call confessionalization, and some Catholic cultural globalization.Catechism, the devotion of the common people and sacred paintings played a crucial role in this movement.

- Summary/Abstract:The lives of the Franciscan Matija Divković (1563–1631) and of the Đakovopriest Ivan Grličić (cir. 1670 – post-1708) are marked by several commonalities: birth place (Jelaške, Olovo), living abroad in Italy for philosophical-theological studies, and pastoral work in the province of Bosna Srebrena. This paper focuses on their role in the earl y phase of catechism literature and their subjective catechetical strategies. Divkovićʼs catechisms– large Nauk krstjanski (1611) and small Nauk krstjanski (1616)belong to the first period of post-Tridentine Catholicism, and they are intended for the people of Bosnia. Grličićʼs catechism Put nebeski (1707) has characteristics of the second period of post-Tridentine Catholicism, and it is known as “the first Slavonian catechism.” These catechisms are compilations of different sources, including the catechism of Robert Bellarmin (1542–1621) as a main common source. It is important to note the authors’ subjective contributions to specific concepts and genres, which express their own views and interpretations on particular subjects of everyday life.This research is focused on the discourse of everyday life (religion, family,human life and honor, sexuality...) the Ten Commandments. Taking into consideration the authors’ temporal and spatial specificities, the paper attempts to explain models for cultural identity and religious formation in the post-Tridentine period.

- Summary/Abstract:Matija Divković and his publisher, Pietro Maria Bertano, ornated the publications of the large Christian Study and One-hundred Miracles (1611), his Sermons and the small Christian Study (1616) with prints (Bertano’s study was situated near the Venetian church “Saint Maria Formosa”). Among the selected illustrations, the iconography of the Resurrection dominates, but there are also scenes of Annunciation, Baptism, Transfiguration, Descent of the Holy Spirit,Crucifixion, and Christ Preaching to the Apostles. The iconography of scenes in Divković’s books is not particularly marked by the post-tridentine spirit,but it shows quotations from the paintings from the most celebrated period of Venetian painting, Cinquecento (16th century). Along with the quotations,the prints in Divković’s books are connected to this school and its tradition.It is worth noting that around 1600 a wealthy merchant from Bosna Srebrena commissioned for his native village an altar painting from Baldassare d’Anna,a painter inscribed to the confraternity of painters (Fraglia pittorica) in Venice.Therefore, at the end of the 16th century. and in the first decades of the 17th century, it is possible to connect the visual culture of the Franciscans of Bosna Srebrena to artistic trends in Venice, without which Franciscan artistic heritage cannot be understood.

- Keywords:Matija Divković; Mary; mariology; Mary’s beauty; divine beauty; theological aesthetics; philosophical aesthetics;
- Summary/Abstract:Matija Divković’s works Christian Study and One-hundred Miracles are analyzed here with reference to the topic of Mary’s beauty, which occurs as an especially striking theme. Before analyzing Divković’s texts, Divković’s historical context and the Marian-theological context are addressed. Thus,the topic of Mary’s beauty is first discussed against a broad background of philosophical and theological thought on beauty, especially in the context of Christian theological aesthetics, which considers beauty primarily as God’s beauty, and the beauty of his love reflected in his creation. The second important context for understanding this topic is that of post-tridentine Mariology and the spread of Marian devotion at this time, in which the theme of Mary’s immaculateness – considered as a precondition for particular closeness to God, and observed from outside as an exceptional mercifully mediated beauty – was emphasised.

- Summary/Abstract:Divković’s small Christian Study was published twenty times and in two editions, one comprehensive, one abridged, from 1616 to 1738. Only the abridged editions have A Small Reader for Children and a catechism section.These two editions each had a life of their own and also complemented each other. The abridged version was used predominantly for teaching literacy and studying fundamental questions of the Catholic faith, while the longer version was used as a supplement for both literacy and spirituality,as well as for defining one’s literary taste. A Small Reader, which appeared in the abridged small Study, is the first Bosnian-Herzegovinan reader, and was in use until the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is not rare for the popularity of Divković’s catechism to be proclaimed in scholarly literature,but analysis of the primer and a suitable place for the abridged version of the small Study within the context of cultural literacy have been all but forgotten.

- Summary/Abstract:Elements of Divkovićʼs syntax – primarily constructions expressing the relationship of possession – are analyzed and commented on with reference to the time when Divković created his work, and to standard Croatian syntax. This paper shows how in Divković’s texts (and in those of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Bosnian Franciscans in general ) there are several syntactic elements which more or less diverge from the general syntactic elements of the time in all variants of the Croatian literary language (occuring under Latin influence), and are more like those of modern Croatian syntax. For example, the possessive form of the name of God,and of living beings in general (formed from appellatives) are frequently expressed in the form of an adjective, while the use of the genitive for expressing possession (formed from apellatives) are rare and most frequently used in poetic expression. This use of the genitive and possessive adjective is confirmed for expressing possession with personal names in the works of Slavonian writers from the eighteenth-century (a century after Divković).It is interesting that although Bartol Kašić does not mention the correlation between the genitive possessive and the possessive adjective in his Institutionum linguae Illyricae libri duo, equivalent Croatian adjectives formed from names and appellatives are included with the Latin genitive possessives of personal names and appellatives which signify possession.

- Summary/Abstract:As the author of this paper had an active role in the recently published transcription of Divković’s Sermons and scholarly studies about this work, the author has come into contact with interesting questions regarding the potential realization of secondary iotation in Matija Divković’s literary works.To be more precise, the main question is whether it was publication practice to note potential secondary iotation as palatals /ļ/ and /ń/ or as non-fused sequences /l/ + /j/ and /n/ + /j/. The authors and editors of Divković’s Sermons have until now for the most part engaged in the practice of noting separate sequences, but the reasons behind such an approach have not been expounded on in literature. There are two possible and probable objections to differentiating non-fused sequences from palatals in publication practices.The first possible objection is that it is unclear which pronunciation lies behind the graphemes, and the second is that a non-fused pronunciation did not exist in Divković’s time, in other words that it is not accurate to distinguish between non-fused and fused pronunciations.

- Summary/Abstract:Christian sermons, which were first attested as a literary genre in the late12th century, were one of the most dominant literary forms during the High and the Late Middle Ages. The theologists and preachers of the period developed a particular form of preaching known as the scholastic or the matic sermon. The structure of these sermons was based on the principles of Mediaeval preaching theory (known as ars praedicandi), which covered a series of rhetorical strategies described in numerous Mediaeval handbooks under the generic name artes praedicandi. The prototype for these handbooks was De arte praedicatoria, compiled by Alain de Lille in 1199. The authors of the aforementioned manuals found the theoretical background for their preaching postulates in a treatise of Saint Aurelius Augustine(354–430) entitled De doctrina Christiana, which was considered the starting point of Christian rhetoric. Mediaeval preaching manuals paved the way for the written preaching practice of Divković’s European predecessors in compiling books of sermons (Johannes Herolt, Guillaume Pepin,Saint Vincent Ferrer and Bernardino de Bustis). Our analysis of Divković’s text shows that his Sermons were influenced by Augustine’s treatise and modelled after the Latin templates of his predecessors. By translating and adapting Latin sermons into Croatian, Divković adopted the main features of the genre and confirmed the affiliation of his Sermons to European homiletic prose in all key elements.

His collection of sermons left a significant mark on Croatian religious literature, from its arrival in the sixteenth century in the form of the Glagolitic Disipuli, which contained partial translations of the aforementioned Latin book, through the work of Matija Divković, and finally through many authors from seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who used Herolt teachings and narrative pieces when compiling their religious didactic literature.

After recapitulating previous studies, it is concluded that Divković used one unknown or maybe two known manuscripts. In the second part, after considering two theological topoi (mandatum–promissio and sola fide) that were prevalent in the dramatizations of biblical texts, the paper emphasises that Divković chose his dramatization based on the topos of sola fide. Later on the paper points out that such a choice is unexpected because it is characteristic of Protestant dramatizations, which advocate “justification by faith”, while Roman Catholic dramatizations advocate “justification by works”.

In this paper we focus on the popular example How Sweet are the Songs of Heaven (Kako su slatke piesni nebeske), the title given by fra Matija Divković in his Sermons (Besjede).

- Keywords:Franciscan chronicles; 18th century; The Ottomans; Bosnia; Confessionalization;
- Summary/Abstract:The eighteenth century was the golden age of Bosnian Franciscan chronicles.The most famous among them are the chronicles of the monastery of Fojnica, written by Fr. Nikola Lašvanin, the chronicle of the monastery of Kraljeva Sutjeska, written by Fr. Bono Benić, and the chronicle of the monastery of Kreševo, written by Fr. Marijan Bogdanović. Another work of historiographic character, “A Survey of Antiquities of the Bosnian Province”,penned by Fr. Filip Lastrić, should be added to the group as well. Possible reasons for the blossoming of the chronicle genre might be found in global trends, such as increased literacy, the emergence of the Catholic revival, that is, the post-Tridentine Church reform, and the process of confessionalisation, which necessitated affirming and protecting minority identity threatened by assimilation within a dramatic framework of war and its aftermath, turmoil and instability. The key bearers of the Catholic reform in Bosnia were the Franciscans, the only members of the Catholic Church who had official status and the right to work in areas under Ottoman rule.

- Keywords:Bosnian Franciscans; Ivan Franjo Jukić; literature; Illyrianism; social reforms; community;
- Summary/Abstract:In the nineteenth century the Bosnian Franciscans were bearers of modernization and cultural emancipation in their own country. Engaged in various disciplines and fields, as is seen in the case of Ivan Franjo Jukić, they fostered cultural and political development – including autonomisation in the literary field (as P. Bourdieu defines it), and connected it with broader social emancipatory tendencies. Culture as a secular field in the modernist movements overtakes the sacred (A. Assman): by analogy to religious practices,literature develops its canonical formation – naming distinguished authors, standardizing norms and values that could potentially mobilise and discipline a community. The hybrid nature of the cultural and political movement in the Illyrian movement helped the Bosnian Franciscans articulate their own polyvalent heterogeneous identity, which was continuously filtrated through unjust social relations and disposable emancipatory strategies in line with necessary social reforms.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper deals with the genre of biography in the Croatian literature of Bosnia and Herzegovina, from its appearance within eighteenth-century chronicles through the independence genre, and its modifications in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Furthermore, it discusses changes in the genre model in relation to literary and documentary elements of a text, in the narrator’s position and his relationship to the story, and in how it presents an ideal of life to pass on. The literary-historical biographical dimension is considered through these changes, as is – indirectly – the Croatian literary tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina in literary historiography.

- Keywords:Bosnian Franciscans; Inter-textuality; Cultural memory; remembering text; remembering genre;
- Summary/Abstract:With the aid of intertextuality and cultural-memory theory, this paperan alyses connections between the chronicles of eighteenth-century Bosnian Franciscans and current (20th and 21th centuries) Bosnian-Herzegovinan and Croatian literature (e.g. the artistic prose of Ivo Andrić, Miljenko Jergović ,Josip Mlakić, Ivan Lovrenović, Feđa Šehović, Dževad Karahasan). - Summary/Abstract:Researchers of Franciscan language and literary heritage have so far very thoroughly explored many topics, including Franciscan orthography. Their research has confirmed common spelling practices, but the question of a standard Franciscan orthography remains open. Keeping in mind that older authors were often models for younger ones, and that their works were mostly comprised of translations of foreign texts, this paper examines whether there are common orthographical practices in the Franciscan literary koine, and whether there is any foreign influence on Franciscan orthography.

- Summary/Abstract:This analysis concentrates on the work Slovnica jezika latinskoga ilirski iztumačenaza porabu mladeži bosanske (‘A Latin Grammar Translated into Illyrian to Be Used by Young Bosnians’; Vienna, 1857) by Filip Kunić, a Bosnian Franciscan, who adapted a Croatian edition of the Latin grammar Institutiones Grammaticae (first edition 1807–1809) by József Grigely.Because this grammar describes Latin, the analysis considers not only the structure of the book’s content, but also its Croatian grammatical terminology(covering phonology, morphology, and syntax), and definitions of grammatical terms. A comparative view of this grammar in relation to several other Latin grammars – those by Antun Mažuranić (1839) and Adolfo Veber Tkalčević (1853) – is included. Kunić used these grammars, in addition to the one by Stjepan Marijanović, as direct model s for his edition.

They are known as Kyriali and are today kept in the Franciscan monasteries in Sinj and on the island of Visovac.Two books of chant were copied in Sinj in 1767 and are sources for cantusfractus in Dalmatia. Both manuscripts by fra Knežević are dedicated to the Holy Virigin Mary, venerated in Sinj, and known as Čudotvorna Gospa Sinjska (Miraculous Virgin Mary of Sinj). The main purpose of this new research is to compare the chant features from Knežević’s Kyriale with similar phenomena known as canto fratto italiano or cantus fractus, which have been present in the Italian Franciscan repertoire from the seventeenth century onwards.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper focuses on the the concept behind and dilemmas (palaeographical and typographical) faced by the author, Nenad Hančić-Matejić, in creating a font (named ‘Arvatica. Fra Divković’) on the basis of the graphemes in Matija Divković’s printed editions for Bosnian/Croatian Cyrillic script.The main purpose for creating a font for the Bosn ian/Croatian minuscule variant of the Cyrillic script was to provide a standard font for transmitting original texts and to be able to write contemporary Croatian texts in this script. Cyrillic prints, in particular from this minuscule tradition – which Matija Divković had developed in full, mostly on the model of writing from books from Dubrovnik – were selected for the creation of this computer font. At the same time, the long Bosnian and Herzegovinan tradition of writing with this Slavonic script was taken into account. The creation of this font is of high importance for analyzing literature in Cyrillic within the framework Croatian literary history.
