Summary/Abstract: A collection of articles dealing with various aspects of sociological reflection focused on the topic of family and intimate life. This book refers to the scientific work of Professor Anna Kwak and exposes the outstanding humanistic and professional values of her many years of research activity devoted to the inspiring analysis of the family, the direction of changes in the Polish family perceived in the European context, socio-cultural factors supporting the family and family practices, but also factors that weaken the importance of the roles and functions of the family in the life of individuals and communities. It is a contemporary compendium of knowledge about the family from various theoretical and methodological perspectives. The publication deals with problems related to the biological, social and cultural aspects of kinship, transnational families, the meaning and functions of family capital, welfare policy and social gerontology. The book is not only a tribute to the Jubilarian, but also to some extent a specific diagnosis of Polish family sociology, family life and intimacy. It presents the current state of theoretical reflection and research results in the above-mentioned areas.

- Keywords:definitions of the family; reproductive decision; self-control; intimate relationship; parenthood
- Summary/Abstract:The multitude of forms of intimate and family relationships requires not only posing a question what constitutes the family, but also calls the term “family” into question. This article discusses the socio-economic conditions that accompany the decision to start a family, indicating the importance of the variability of social control centres in this process. Self-control is the main form of social control in contemporary society. The reproductive decision is subjected to strong pressures: to provide children with good economic and cultural capital on the one hand, and, to create emotional fulfilling partnership on the other. Doing both, simultaneously, is not easy. Not every person will have sufficient resources to cope with these pressures. Nevertheless, people will attempt to do so, and in making their attempts, create different kinds of intimate relations. The patterns of these relations will coincide with structural divisions. Whether we can define one concept to describe and involve all of these relations, remains open to debate.

- Keywords:family sociology; everyday life sociology; nuclear family; inclusive family definition; being family & doing family perspectives
- Summary/Abstract:The main aim of the paper is to analyse the diversity in the ways of defining the notion of family, which is revealed in the work of scholars dealing with family life, and which also resonates in the methodology used in the research of this area. The author describes three dimensions of differentiation: 1) the approach of “social reformers” vs. the approach of sociologists that existed at the beginning of familiology as a scientific sub-discipline; 2) the definition of the nuclear family vs. the “inclusive definition of the family” and 3) the “new” approach to family research based on the perspective of doing family as opposed to the perspective of being family. At the end of the paper, the author poses a provocative question: is the sociology of the family as a scientific sub-discipline justified at the present time?

- Keywords:marriage; family; value of marriage and family; reasons for starting a family
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to attempt to identify the determinants of getting married and starting a family. The reasons why young (and not only young) people get married today have been selected on the basis of the research and literature in the field of family sociology. The analysis indicates that the high value attributed to family life and the sphere of emotions –love, trust, sense of security and stability, the sense of community and the desire to have children are the main reasons for starting a family. Family support and assistance as well as commitments to family solidarity also seem important. However, qualifying individual factors into the category of choice or necessity is difficult, because they are mostly twofold, resulting from multi-faceted and specific nature of interpersonal relationships. One can only assume that the basis for marriage and the family is choice, whereas its duration results from both choice and the necessity.

- Summary/Abstract:The influence of the modern family on the life careers of women and men is indisputable. Every person either used to belong or belongs to this institution. However, the strength of its influence depends both on the form of social ties connecting family members and the institutional and structural features that the family possesses. To properly describe the modernization processes to which a family is subjected, its definition must first be established. This is due to the multitude of forms the modern family takes on. It should also be determined who can be included as a family member. As a result, it will be possible to indicate what kind of obligations individuals have in different family types.

- Keywords:family; women; men; power; partnership
- Summary/Abstract:The basic problem discussed in the text are the changing relations of power and subordination in intimate relationships. The change in socially accepted and legally regulated family relationships, involving the transition from the total power of a man (pater familias) to partnership in relationships, is not a completed process. Despite the acceptance of partnership declared by the majority of society, imbalances remain. Violence and performing unpaid housework are given in the text as the examples of exercising and being subjected to power in modern families. They are also used to analyse subordination, power and resistance strategies, as well as established scripts and slow changes in relationships. In my analysis, I refer to the results of feminist research and theories (including Okin, Connell), as well as to the theory of power of Dahl, Lukes and Bourdieu.

- Summary/Abstract:Intimacy as a special kind of bond between people is a space for individuals to better understand their own nature and barriers. In safe conditions, partners can experiment both on the physical and emotional level. There are many factors which influence the level of bond between partners. One of them is also a consensual non-monogamy or the phenomenon when partners decide that emotional and/or sexual exclusivity is not crucial for their relationship. The author’s research is based on individual in-depth interviews with people whose relationships belong to a consensual non-monogamous group. The purpose of the article is to outline how this form of relationship affects the understanding of one’s own nature, one’s expectations toward living together and the acceptance of oneself and one’s partner.

- Keywords:intimate relationships; intimate couples; experiences in a relationship; break-ups; causes for relationship impermanence
- Summary/Abstract:The article fits into the sociology of family and easily finds its place among studies on the contemporary intimate couple and on alterations in intimacy. The research presented in the article is conceptualized from the perspective of changes in family and marriage life, taking into consideration three models of intimacy, i.e., traditional, liberal, and mixed. The authors adopted a dynamic approach to a couple (i.e., couple as a process) and the assumption that the main problem of contemporary couples lies in continual decisions whether to be together or to break up. The aim of the research was to recognize conditions for (im)permanence in relationships and to explain the interdependence between experiences in a relationship and the causes considered important for the decision to break up or stay together despite dissatisfaction with a relationship. The study was conducted in 2018 on a representative sample of 951 adult Poles, using the technique of CAPI direct interviews. On the basis the studies, it was established that experiences in a relationship (form and duration of a relationship) diversify the frequency with which some reasons to break up are indicated, within such spheres of relationship as being faithful, relations between partners, attractiveness, partner’s problems. Experiences in a relationship decide about reasons to maintain an unsatisfactory relationship to a lesser degree.

- Keywords:love; intimate relationship; erotic love; close relationships; couple; attractiveness; appearance; personality
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to present the results of the analysis of empirical research on the role of appearance and other individual characteristics in partner selection. Attractiveness is understood both from the prism of physical attractiveness and non-physical features that influence the reactions and behaviour of an individual. The theoretical starting point is the complexity and multidimensionality of social factors of the partner selection mechanism according to Matthijs Kalmijn’s qualifications. The analysis of the research was qualitative. It appeared that both men and women perceive attractiveness as a multidimensional feature, including a number of variables, not only the appearance itself, but also personality traits, the way of verbal and non-verbal communication, the sense of humour and others. On the basis of the analysis of the research participants’ statements, three scenario types of the course of the romantic relationships beginnings have been reconstructed in relation to the significance that the respondents gave to particular features of their partner. Especially in relation to the relationship between physical attractiveness and attractiveness in terms of other individual characteristics. The first type is based on a consensus in assessing the psycho physical characteristics of the potential partner (both appearance and other characteristics were considered attractive); the second type, where psychogenic characteristics (personality, etc.) were rated much higher than physical characteristics (beauty, appearance); and the third type of scenario, where physical characteristics were rated very high while psychogenic characteristics were low.

- Keywords:Value of Children; costs and values of children; reproductive choices; childlessness; life-course
- Summary/Abstract:The Value of Children Theory, developed almost half a century ago, proved to be very useful in explaining fertility decline occurring in developed countries in the first half of the 20th century. However, when it comes to explaining the very low levels of fertility, observed currently in many developed countries, the utility of the theory seems limited. The chapter built on the demographic and sociological literature and drawing upon the results of my own qualitative research, presents a modification of this theoretical model. I argue that looking at costs and values of children from life-course perspective brings new insights and allows better understanding of reproductive choices in the post-modern world. The main purpose of the chapter is to show how the life-course perspective on the Value of Children model expands our research perspective and delineates new directions for future research on family changes.

- Summary/Abstract:Over just a couple of generations, parents have greatly increased the amount of time, attention, and money that they are putting into raising children. Nowadays, childhood is understood as a period of life with its own values and rights. Rather than being a commodity, children are now to a greater extent thought of as sacred, priceless, and irreplaceable. Intensive parenting – constant teaching and monitoring of children – has been the norm for parents since the 1990s in the Western culture (Faircloth, Hoffman, Layne 2013; Janning 2019). The result came in the form of a parenting style that is „child-centered, expert-guided, emotionally absorbing, labour intensive and financially expensive” (Hays 1996: 8). This paper examines the significance of culturally specific parenting practices, ‘parenting’ as a subject of professional expertise, and parenting as an activity through which adults are increasingly expected to become personally fulfilled. I focus on the relationship between intimate family life and broader cultural trends, and the ways in which the moral and commercialised context for parenting are negotiated and sustained in a post-industrial society.

- Page Range:183-195

- Keywords:mothers; fathers; tiredness; pleasure; satisfaction
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the study is to indicate the consequences contemporary parents face in connection with social changes. The first is tiredness, which both mothers, burdened with duties, and fathers, facing increasing challenges, complain about. The analysis of research results shows that the problem of tiredness is one of the main problems of modern parents. The paper emphasizes symptoms of long-term tiredness as accompanied by symptoms that worsen the quality of life and daily functioning of mothers and fathers, as well as their marital and family relationships. The second consequence indicated is the increase in the meaning of subjectively felt satisfaction in all areas of human life. This signifies that marriage and parenthood are widely perceived as a source of satisfaction and pleasure, which for many parents can mean disappointment resulting from the effort that must be put into their implementation. Thus, tiredness and the lack of expected satisfaction are nowadays serious threats to family stability.

- Summary/Abstract:In recent years, the issue of voluntary childlessness has been increasingly often present in Polish newspapers, social discourse and scientific research. This text is an analysis of relevant media discourse and shows that voluntary rejection of parenthood raises strong emotions. The discourse reveals a dichotomous division between childless people and parents. Voluntarily childless people fight for their right to individual choices. Parents accuse those voluntarily childless of selfishness, love of comfort and infantilism. The language of the discourse about voluntary childlessness seems slightly more gentle than it was a few years ago. Both sides agree that it is better not to be a parent than to be a bad one, acting against oneself.

- Summary/Abstract:Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic disorder characterised by a set of phenotypic traits, which include infantile hypotonia, short stature, and morbid obesity. A family living with a child with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) faces some unique challenges: How can siblings be helped to understand and support their brother or sister with PWS?; How can appropriate behaviour be encouraged in relatives who are resistant to maintaining, for example, food security?; How can a couple cope with the stress of living with a child who has special needs?; And how do caregivers take care of themselves in the midst of the often daily challenges of life with a person with PWS? Without support in these areas, a family can quickly find itself in crisis. PWS affects the entire family system. The article attempts to show and interpret the subjective experiences of the person (mother) whose biography includes raising the Prader-Willi syndrome child.

- Summary/Abstract:This article reviews the traditional and the modern factors which shape the role of the modern mother. The role of the mother is extremely complex, shaped both by individual, micro-social, and macro-social factors. The implementation of the role of the mother is conditioned by the relationship with the microstructural world and the favourable attitude of the macrostructural world. The factors which influence the woman’s attitude towards motherhood and which are becoming more and more important are: knowledge about the role of the mother, mental attitude, willingness to undertake hardships, and calculation of gains and losses. The review shows that despite many studies on the role of the mother, there are still large areas of ignorance about the specific roles of mothers carried out under specific conditions, in unusual family structures and atypical place and time.

- Keywords:non-heteronormative parenting; parenting practices; families of choice in Poland; family configurations of non-heterosexual people; same-sex relationships
- Summary/Abstract:Parenting of non-heterosexual people shows a vastly diverse area due to various family-parental configurations and practices and their dynamic change over time. Hence, the decision to present the diversity of parenting narratives taking generation differences into account. In my presentation I will trace the experiences of being a parent told by the younger and older generation (45+), showing that the basic demarcation line that differentiates different formation baggage concerns the (im) possibility of implementing parental plans. The older generation either faced the inability to be a parent within a same-sex relationship or were forced to pursue their parenthood within a heterosexual relationship. On the other hand, the narrations of the younger generation might be described as stories about the possibilities of implementing plans within the relationship and dilemmas related to elections, as the emergence of the latest reproductive techniques has widened the possibilities of becoming a parent. In the text, I analyse non-heteronormative parenting, showing on the one hand its diversity, and on the other, an intergenerational community of experiences and practices associated with a specific political and legal context, cultural and social norms of gender, sexuality and family.

- Keywords:kinship; ghosts; spirituality; copulation; procreation
- Summary/Abstract:The paper discusses the social constructing of kinship in the context of the new monography of Trobriand theory of kinship and magic (Mosko 2017). In essence, Mosko does not contradict Malinowski’s narrative but enriches it with new data and new theory reformulating the old Lucien Lévy-Bruhl theory of participation. As a result, three important changes are introduced: (1) instead of negation of physiological fatherhood the physiological (but different than in the commonly assumed) cooperation of father in procreation by mother is acknowledged; (2) the body is permeated with spirit instead of opposition; (3) masculinity and feminity are intermixing in both mother and father. The Trobriand theory is then compared with the Christian theory of procreation that includes not only the parthenogenesis but also the spiritual fatherhood of Joseph as well as divine fatherhood, and allows for the development of spiritual and divine kinship. The fatherhood independent of the physiology of procreation and genetics is the social fact as is the motherhood and kinship in general. This is overlooked by critics of the gender theory who, defending the naturalist concept of kinship, undermine its metaphysics.

Although the authors declare freeing sociology from moral judgments, their own analysis of the family changes seems to be normatively biased. Migration appears to be “a social evil”, weakening the resources of the nation, leading to the “demoralization”, “lowering the moral level” and “degeneration” of the family. On the other hand, Polish Peasant… is a unique set of historical data analyzed in contemporary migration literature: migrational motivations, the myth of the receiving country, managing the household from a distance, transnational parenting, changes of care and relationship patterns.
