Već i kriška blistave posvete knjizi S Napretkom kroz stoljeće (1906.- 2006.) posve razložno donosi upućenost u tematiku i povijesni sluh ljudi okupljenih u i oko Napretkova poslanja.

The history of Slovenian popular music is one of the most under-researched areas of Slovenian cultural heritage. It can be argued, therefore, that no definitions of Slovenian popular music would have been established had extensive research not been carried out by different scholars and experts, functioning in this respect as a kind of substitute for official work. The question here is simply what kind of understanding of Slovenian popular music emerges in this more or less spontaneous and unofficial research. The author analyses the content of all Slovenian scientific and expert monographs, scientific and expert articles, film and TV documentaries as well as school textbooks, at least some segments of which address Slovenian popular music, and argues that these accounts are significantly biased: for the most part, they focus only on different marginal music genres while the majority of other music genres, including all those that are the most popular among Slovenians, are neglected.

The paper examines the thesis about the elements of gender, race, and morality discrimination in popular media culture, with an emphasis on two television series: Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. The main research question is whether the elements of discrimination that are most commonly found in Hollywood productions can be found in these series as well. Using the method of multi-perspective cultural studies and looking at the subject dealt with through the constructivist paradigm, the authors conclude that in popular culture, such as the aforementioned series, there are elements of discrimination: morality is dominantly nihilistic, with few characters possessing moral integrity; racial discrimination is evident both in the story and in the cast selection; gender representation is stereotyped, men get a lot more space. The authors argue that it is impossible to explore current media effects on audiences, but it is possible to interpret messages and meanings in popular media culture.

In the history of the city located in the southern part of the Titel plateau a significant turning point represented the abolition of the so-called Šajkaš region, which existed from the beginning of the 18th century and was ruled by the city of Vienna. After the region was abolished the city was integrated in Bacs-Bodrog County together with several other settlements. In that way a new chapter began in the life of a multi-ethnic city where aproximatelly four thousand citizens, mostly Serbs, Hungarians, Germans, Slovaks, Croats and Shokacs lived. The end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century was marked by the significant development of the city, reflected in the founding of several institutions and associations (Magistrate’s office, District Court, Notary, Civil Government, Boys` School, Steamboat Station, Railway Station, Post Office, Telegraph Office, two savings banks, two reading clubs, Catholic circle, Self-help group, Economic Union, Funeral Association, River Boat Association, etc.). About a thousand Hungarian inhabitants of Titel in 1908. already had a need for local Hungarian press. For that reason in January 1908. the newspaper Čajkas (A Csajkás) was launched in the Sime Suboticki printery, which first appeared on Saturdays, later on Sundays as a “weekly for society, economy and various contents”. This well-edited newspaper, which was published on 4–8 the page in three-column printing was useful not only to the Hungarians in Titel, but also to their neighbours, since it regularly reported on the most important local and world events. From 1908 to 1917, the paper was edited by Dr Gyula Bartunek, while in the last year of publishing (1917) the editor was Simo Subotički. For nine years it was the newspaper of Hungarians in Titel, and it stopped going out probably because of paper shortage during the First World War. After that period it was more or less forgotten, so in this article, on the occasion of the hundred and tenth anniversary of the newspaper, we are trying to remember it.

Death, sadness, alienation, and confusion are themes that are rarely associated with children’s animated series. Nevertheless, there are multi-episode TV programs that – similarly to books, video games, and films – raise such issues even though they are created for young viewers. In that way, they not only break the cultural taboo, but also offer aesthetics and sensitivity that complement the image of mainstream children’s programming as laid-back and cheerful. As an interesting example, one might point to Patrick McHale’s Over the Garden Wall (2014), an animated series that deals with such themes as fear or death in a unique way, showing them against the background of adventure and wandering. In this article, the authors focus on the ways in which the work resonates with the mentioned motifs, but also with history and popular culture. The analysis leads to a conclusion that Over the Garden Wall is an intertextual series, open to interpretation for younger and older viewers alike, as well as enabling the experience of a Thanatic catharsis – a cleansing from the negative feelings associated with death and loss.
