More...This paper is the author’s study of certain interesting yet under-researched details from the secular and the spiritual biography of Sheikh Bošnjak. If elaborated, these elements would contribute to the true understanding of his incredible spiritual strength. Several details from his life that drew considerable attention were explored in order to establish spiritual closeness with his personality and demonstrate how such internal closeness is, in fact, necessary for proper and through understanding of his endless gnostic teaching.

Ćamil Sijarić was a writer whose writing was based on myths and legends which he revived in his “timeless” stories and met with ordinary people’s destinies and incredible situations. He wrote about the constant struggle of a man with himself, about the relationship between man and woman, a man and nature, from which he has emerged and for which he has primeval bound. Novels formed on historical basis acquainted us with tragic and sometimes comical stories of Balkan man, divided between East and West, between faith and unbelief, between the Turks and the Austrians and many other rappers established long time ago on the borders of this area. In his extensive literary work he included a wide fan of themes, motifs and forms, with sometimes uneven power of expression, but always with an amazing sense of story-telling.

The attempt is to light up historical role of Džemaludin Čaušević, not only in religious, but, first of all, in socio-political and cultural importance. Especial attention has been paid to sociopolitical environment, because, as much as he was inspired by reformative ideas of Turkish youth, at the same time he was defined by the time and socio- political circumstances he lived in. There almost has not been more turbulent period of time in entire history of Bosnia and Herzegovina than those last decades of the 19th and till a half of the 20th century. At that time history was recorded “every day” In that context, through the prism of historical events, the article shows the influence of Causevic upon the entire socio-political and cultural circumstances. It is certain that his influence was very strong. There are many confirming facts presented in the article. One of the most important facts is the way how he used to send messages to the society (population). Even though the media have not been developed well, number of information consumers was reduced. He used to use media very actively, but the best method of communication with the population was “mosque” - it was the shortest and the fastest way for his messages (a week) to get to the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the cultural plan, using the strength (power) of his own authority, he did his best to eliminate stereotype from Bosniac Muslims about western culture and everything what is associated to it, even certain number of “ulama” was burdened by those stereotypes, what made their work more difficult. The facts presented in this article confirm that Causevic belongs to a group of outstanding persons of the newest (modern) history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In Nazor’s travelogue From Split to the Pyramids the unseen holds the power over the seen, and historical issues, mythology and literature shape the poet’s horizon of expectations and his attitude towards the experienced. The text is marked by the poet’s dissatisfaction which is a result of his futile attempts to inscribe the imagined space, formed by what he has read, into the actual space.

The reviews are written by those who listen to hutbas. The reviews are not intended to be valorizing; rather, they aim to improve upon the hutba, analyzing it as a public statement by an imam and critically evaluating the statement. The reviewers react at those aspects which they consider important for a hutba (its length, quality, message, presentation, literacy level, formulation, etc.).
More...The research subject in this article is reactions of ulama gathered around the periodical Hikmet to the phenomenon of religious modernism in Bosnia and Herzegovina between the two World Wars. The methods used in this research are: method of the content analysis, comparative and descriptive methods. The most significant issues discussed by this ulama are: the issue of preserving the "authentic Islam", emancipation of Muslim women, unacceptability of ijtiha, illegitimacy of the opinions of the secular ulama about the issues of Islam, is the dress code a reflection of man’s belief or unbelief, the issue of banking that involves dealing with interest and the issue of legitimacy of polygamic marriages. Hikmet recognised as valid only that explanation of the text of the Qur’an that is based on the Qur’an and the sunnah of the Prophet s.w.s., and they held that understanding of the message of the Qur’an is possible only on the bases of the original text of the Qur’an and by no means on the bases of the translation of the Qur’an. When explaining text of the Qur’an, authors of the articles published in Hikmet attempted to offer answers the challenges brought about by social and other changes of the time, and they tried to give solutions for the Muslim society that, in their opinion, would be in accordance with Islamic rules and at the same time could be brought to practice in given social circumstances.

The paper discusses the Czech Aphorisms of Jan Sobotka. Czech aphorist in his compositions misses values, which are considered to be the most important in the contemporary world. That is why he seeks the way through which one could understand surrounding him reality and follow the rules, which guarantee proper functioning of individual in this reality. In addition, he creates human rules according to nature's principles: to survive. He also seeks to excuse a man's behaviour, which depends on a situation in which he is, although it seems that it is rather ironic approach to the problem. Searching wisdom of life became a reason for Jan Sobotka to describe a typical for him image of the world in the distorting mirror (Eulenspiegel), which corresponds to didactic nature of aphorism (although nowadays in aphorisms that nature is hidden) and principle: let us learn on others mistakes, because learning on our own costs us much.

The main idea in this paper is to present reflections on some important changes contextually related to appearance of mass-media. The irony in the title suggests the critical approach of the paper which aims to point at the fundamental changes in understanding basic notions such as freedom, game or leisure. The idea is to remind us on some contemporary forms of seducing and manipulating whose chosen area of activity is “free time”. Critical dimensions of media theories, or more strictly, philosophies of media, right in this field find the key evidence of transforming the contemporary citizen and subject into an observer/watcher/consumer, as a new proletarian shaped for times of “original accumulation of media space”.
More...In this article the author study political action for the abolishment of traditional Muslim women’s dress -veil- (known as zar and feredja) in Yugoslavia during the period 1947-1950 and the position taken by the leadership of the Islamic Religious Community (IVZ) regarding this action. The action was initiated and carried out by the Antifascist Front of Women (AFŽ), a grass root organization under the control of the Communist Party devoted to the emancipation of women. The leadership of the IVZ by the means of its resolutions and statements supported the abolishment of veil arguing that the covering of the face of Muslim women is not religious imperative but customary practice. To this effect the head of the IVZ- rais al-ulama- cited the fatwa of the University of Al-Azhar issued in 1937. Since the political action for the removal of veil was not successful the parliament of the Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1950 adopted a law on the prohibition of zar and feredja. The leadership of the IVZ supported this law. The role of the Islamic Community was to legitimize positions and measures taken by the institutions of the Socialist state.

This article uses data from the census to examine the structure of the Zadar society. The examination includes analyses of class groups (citizens, plebeians, patricians, clergy and representatives of the Venetian civil and military government) and professional (artisans, craftsmen, tradesmen and sailors) groups as well as the studies of the demographic structure of the society and the chief migration trends that may be recognized in the census.
