Although considered one of the finest voices of American minimalism, Ann Beattie has not met the adequate critical response yet. Her novels and short stories are mostly concerned with lives of inconspicuous women who struggle hard against their inhibition to express the deepest and finest emotions. The heroines of Ann Beattie are somehow doomed to be passive observers of other people’s lives, mostly because they cannot deal properly with their own emotional problems. In analysis of stories Where You 'll Find Me and The Second Question we witness the anxieties and indifferences of main characters, caused by their marginality and invisibility in the life of the male protagonists. However, a closer look into the minds of Ann Beattie’s women reveal rich imagination and refined sensibility which react even to the slightest moves on the stage of human life.

This paper analyzes the genre-ideological settings which stories of extraordinary women, stories aimed at girls and female young adults, are based on both globally (Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 1 and 2, 20 Extraordinary Girls Who Changed the World) and regionally (Prkosne Srpkinje, Kakva ženska, Žene BiH, Priče o neustrašivim hrvatskim ženama) . The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to analyze the discursive strategies that utilize the ideology of liberal-feminist and / or post-feminist media and movements in the first decades of the 21st century in the text. Those strategies are evident in the selection of exceptional women who enter these anthologies, as well as in representational strategies, the result of which is the erasure of class and political assumptions underlying women’s movements in the 20th century. Secondly, the aim of this paper is to point out how the regional peculiarity of the female portrait genre, its internationalist and pro-Yugoslav character, since it was created in the periodicals of both feminist and communist movement in the interwar period, is transformed in order to adapt to the market and also due to the acceptance of post-feminist ideology as the dominant ideology of contemporary girls’ culture and mass media (Rosalind Gill, 2007). Finally, I will point out what model of women’s history offers a constant balancing between the feminist background of the genre and the semantic layers of postfeminism, which is the ideology of deradicalization of the women’s movement.
More...The interpretation of poems by Sylvia Plath begins with a photo of allmale poets society with this famous American poetess conspicuously absent in it. Skilfully combining a biographical approach with close reading, this text presents us with combined facts from the life of the poetess and her poems that outline the fate of the writer in men’s literary history. Analysis begins with poems thematically rooted in everyday and personal life, continues on the irresistible tendency for cancelling oneself, and finishes with an antiheroic conquest of freedom. In doing so, Plath shows that recognition of the autobiographical means its destruction.

Starting from the theoretical premises for the ontological dominant of postmodern prose, this text interprets these premises in the novel The Symmetry Teacher by Russian author Andrei Bitov. The interpretation is focused on two levels: first, interpretation of ontological themes and metafictional devices through which these themes are articulated in the Bitov’s novel; secondly, the function of those themes and devices, regarding the illustration of ontological games with the boundaries between the worlds (literature-reality, art-life, fiction-fact), between texts (original and translated texts and meta-texts) and between genres.

The paper analyzes Slavonian habits and customs related to family, marriage and marital relations in the 18th century. The author uses descriptions from travelogue and literary works as well as descriptions from the original archive materials. They are compared to Joseph II’s legal regulation on marital relations and catechism. The author also analyzes the possible existence of interconnection of the Slavonian morals and adopting the marriage edict of the Emperor Joseph II, or in other words if the legal regulation was only a consequence of comprehensive enlightenment reforms.

Several pedagogical considerations come with the transition from traditional to virtual teaching, and it is necessary to provide teachers with a potential approach to teaching and learning. This article gives an overview of the teaching methods Jesus used with a focus on parables, highlights the modern constructivist approach to teaching, and singles out characteristics of constructivism in Jesus’ teaching model. Combined, this presents a basis for practical advice in today’s context of online teaching, respectively in a virtual setting. The article highlights characteristics of Jesus as a teacher which present-day teachers can apply to their contexts and finishes with suggestions for further research.

In the last few decades, various branches of science, especially philology with the analysis of ancient ritual texts, toponomastic research and comparative studies of oral tales in the folklore tradition of different populations, have significantly contributed to the new knowledge of ancient beliefs and gods worshiped throughout Europe, in the period before Christianity was completely established. I have discussed these issues on several occasions, by classifying such remains in Croatia, in the new finds or the monuments that were previously known, but were interpreted differently - both chronologically and iconographically. I relied on several interesting artefacts from Dalmatia: the bronze gilded cross-shaped shackles from the early medieval cemetery in Nin, the four-headed idol from Vaćan and the equestrian relief from Žrnovnica, and, for this occasion, an old find from the area of Ljubuški, now kept in the Museum of Humac. Namely, there is a rustic and almost schematically carved head on the fragment of one pillar, which can be said to be part of the idol of a Slavic deity, with great likelihood, given several artistic analogies. The text also draws attention to the iconographic features of the face, such as the prominent mustache and triangular beard, which have some other characterizations that can be assumed to represent precisely the pre-Christian deities - in our case Perun.

The aim of the article was to present the lexical richness and word-formation potential of the lexeme matka [mother] in the dialects of Ostróda, Warmia and Mazury. The lexemes mother, mama and muter, as well as their derivatives were analyzed. The linguistic material was based on the file of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur [A Dictionary of Dialects of Ostróda, Warmia and Masuria Regions] that is a record of dialect status at the end of the 1950s. The lexeme matka is connected with the creation of 10 derivatives, the lexeme mama – with 7 derivatives, and muter – 2 derivatives. The derivation of the last word is a proof of the adaptation of a German root in the dialects under discussion. The analysis of the material has shown that the derivatives have a modify ing semantic function and they convey positive emotions towards the referent. In this way, hypocoristic formations were created whose suffixes do not differ significantly from the general Polish word-formation system. In addition, it turned out that about 80% of the derivatives come from the dialect literary style, as the second degree suffixes are not functional in the analyzed dialects. In communicating positive feelings towards the designate, simple suffixes were sufficient for the language users. It is not possible to determine isomorphs on the basis of the material collected in the file, as questions about diminutives were attached to the questionnaire at the last stage of the fieldwork.
