Adequate resources are the most important factors for survival, growth and development of the organization. Scholars increasingly focus on intangible resources. Among others, these include competencies of managers and employees. A large part of them are universal: important for achieving success at all times. However, it can be assumed that due to different characteristics of companies in various stages of their development, the importance of these competencies will change on the organizations’ development paths. This article attempts to identify the key competencies of managers and employees, which determine its competitiveness in specific stages of development. This issue is not new, but the literature on the subject matter is fragmented. As the background considerations, the most recognizable among both scholars and practitioners model of organizational growth and development, L.E. Greiner’s model, was chosen.

This paper describes and makes attempts to explain the role and importance of renewal processes in the implementation of organizational learning mechanisms, with special emphasis on a process approach and standards of writing in the form of tools in the area of business process modeling notation (BPMN). This indicates that the regeneration processes of enterprises form the basis of organizational changes to enable an evolutionary development towards the implementation of enterprise learning mechanisms. In order to describe such a complex issue, the reality is simplified, laminarysating discrete renewal processes and nonlinear processes of organizational learning.

The need to increase the complexity of looking into the problems of business operation and development and related changes in the strategic dimension of business management is a natural consequence of evolving perspectives of defining the company itself. Of course, the indicated changes correspond to the challenges identified in management practice and the solutions used in this respect. Informed vision is one of the basic elements, which in addition to the ability to depicting the kinds of activities to perform and creating space to take them, ensures the consistency of the entire system over time. In a fundamental way, it prevents the risk of collapse of the system allowing its necessary reconfiguration.

Our perception of business is biased and subject to illusion, with the so-called halo effect being the illusion that is most widely spread. There are a few forms of the halo effect. The inclination to assess individual features on the basis of a general perception is one of them. It is difficult for most people to independently evaluate individual features of an object, and consequently the object is evaluated as a whole. The mind creates and sustains a holistic and internally coherent picture of reality, and thus limits cognitive dissonance. The halo effect is not the only illusion that distorts our perception of business. However, it is the basic illusion. It is the “bottleneck” of the evaluation of reality, which is often accompanied by other cognitive errors, limiting the quality of the data obtained as well as the clarity of observation of factors that affect the results of companies and the effectiveness of their operation.

The environment in which organizations characterized by unpredictability, uncertainty and volatility operate today causes that enterprises are forced to seek new sources of competitive advantage. One such a source corresponding to the complex conditions of operation of enterprises seems to be the use of intuition in decision making. It allows to make a decision in the case of both lack and excess of information and to make a choice among the alternatives in the absence of clear selection criteria. The aim of this paper is to present the use of intuition in decision-making as a possible, contemporary source of sustainable competitive advantage. The paper consists of three main parts. In the first one basic concepts of competitive advantage and potential sources of competitive advantage today are analyzed. Then the author presents the nature and the importance of the issue of intuition in decision making. The rest of the paper attempts to present the intuition as a potential source of competitive advantage. For this purpose the competitive cycle proposed by M. Moroz is used.

Skills of key employees in enterprise’s improvement

The skills of key employees are crucial in improving enterprises, which was shown based on the analyses of surveys conducted. They were carried out on 66 key employees of the enterprises considered large enterprises of the Wielkopolska Voivodeship. A sample was of partial nature since the individuals that were to participate in it were selected intentionally (a key employee of the enterprise was appointed by the company chairman). However, the static analysis of the obtained material to be studied makes it possible to state the representative nature of the sample since a sample is representative if all variables that researchers are interested in are present in it. That condition has been met in the study and thus we can state that the sample is representative in a typological manner. A sample is representative if the distribution of variables in the sample corresponds to the distribution of variables in the parent population, as assessed by us. For the study conducted, the sample is representative due to the distribution of most variables. A sample is representative if its dependencies are typical of the dependencies of the whole population being studied. The dependencies shown in the study seem to be typical of the whole population; thus we may conclude that the sample is representative in its nature also in this respect [Kowal 1998]. Following the analysis of the actual status regarding the skills of key employees, it has been shown that the image of a contemporary employee who participates in the process of improving enterprises is diversified.

This paper describes the concept of organization’s immunity. Using the analogy of the natural immune system, the elements of the immune system of the organization (organization boundaries, non-specific immunity and specific immunity) are presented. In particular, the subsystem of specific (acquired) immunity is being described in more detail. The active and passive manner of shaping the specific organization’s immunity is indicated. Two essential elements of the specific immunity subsystem actively shaped by the organization are identified.

Permanently changing environment and increasing customers demands are forcing companies to continuously develop and quest for excellence. It is a never-ending process that must be supported by appropriate organizational culture, which allows to learn organizations, ring the changes or use the full potential of employees. A necessary step that determines the actions taken is the diagnosis of organizational culture that allows to shape the culture, stimulate employees to achieve the organization’s objectives and limit barriers leading to business excellence. It is possible through a variety of methods and tools such as Harrison’s Organizational Culture Survey, the Organizational Culture Profile, Organizational Culture Index, Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument and the Organizational Culture Inventory.The purpose of this article is to present the methods of diagnosing organizational culture and to highlight the role and importance of this process in the pursuit of excellence.

Energy sector is not commonly associated with competition and due practices. However, lately the situation has changed and energy suppliers have to compete to gather the clients: individual as well as organizational. That means it is necessary to look closer into clients’ needs and opinions to be more competitive. The main aim of the paper is to present the situation in the sector and to present the results of the research conducted by the authors. The research concerns individual clients as well as companies. An organization which aim is to build permanent and sustainable competitive advantage has to appreciate the potential of changes which is in its employees. Planned development of personnel competencies as well as directing improvement actions towards making the effectiveness and efficiency of its processes better can be a “virtuous mechanism” of organization improvement. The increase of competence, which results in the increase of personnel engagement in changes’ initiating, can be a permanent element of competitive advantage. The article presents how the use of an approach in the standardized management systems to planning the development of employees competencies can be a base to build a learning organization.
