This article thematizes rethinking the recent past of Bulgaria in the literature with the following main points: the world of spirituality as an escape from socialist realism, the friendship between the peoples of Eastern Bloc, class enemy, collectivism and individualism ascent in the social hierarchy, talking and thinking as parallel worlds, respect to the historical past, homeland and identity.

The present article studies Sibylle Lewitscharoffs interpretation of own and foreign. The attitude of criticism of the novel resembles the literary works of the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhardt, not in style, melody or linguistic structures, but in intensity and power of literary provocation towards the readers. The art of exaggeration (Ubertreibungskunst), in which Bernhardt excels, is not an end in itself in Lewitscharoffs novel. Both authors use the drastic hyperbole in order to twist (zur Kenntlichkeit entstellen) the poverty of spirit imposed by the myths, maybe in an attempt to make it...surmountable, until it becomes recognizable.

Das mannigfaltige Prag in Werken von Hašek und Konstantinov

Big cities with their ethnically mixed populations have always been a playground for the development of human characters. This paper presents Prague as a stage, on which episodes from the lives of literary figures of two Slavic authors are acted out. The Czech Jaroslav Hašek and the Bulgarian Aleko Konstantinov were socially and politically engaged and expressed their ideological and political positions through their (anti)heroes. They deliberately ignored the cultural traditions, the history and the sights of the city in order to focus, with satirical power, on the life philosophy of the ‘little’ people suffering injustices. The big city typifies and individualizes the presented characters and plays a role in the action.

The article analyzes of mnemotopos of liberty present in the Bulgarian and Polish literary traditions. In both the literatures a lot of motifs, topics, figures and places expressing liberty and drawing inspiration mainly from national history can be found. The symbolic liberation repertoire consolidated by literary texts constitutes a significant tribute to Bulgarian and Polish cultural memory. In 2018 a bilingual Bulgarian and Polish volume of verse Sofia Berlin by Plamen Doynov was published, it introduces deliberations on the origin, realization and critical valuation of liberty based on specific memory figures recognized by Bulgarian-Polish readers. They help to understand the significance of Central and East-European processes of (post) transformation, transculturation, migration, globalization on which traumatic experiences of the (Nazi and communist) past are superimposed.

The paper deals with ’A Dark Hero’ - a representative text from Vazov’s social prose. Its social-psychological problematics has been interpreted through the prism of the books ’Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View’and ‘The Lucifer Effect. Understanding How Good People Turn Evil’ by Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo. It analyses how Nenko –the main character – overcomes the ordeal forced on him by the social situation and the authority of the powers that be. These observations lead to the conclusion that the disobedience to authority, through which Nenko preserves his moral purity, is a result of his Christian morality and his ability to balance the acceptance of time and not to fall into the trap of living only for the present.

Radev tended to exploit in different moments throughout his early period, and to propose the possibility of reading the Slavic discourse as a metadiscursive bind, related to the impermanence and inconceivability of discursive categories.

The end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was a time of complete and final secularization of culture in Europe and in the Slavic world. Anthropocentrism replaced theocentrism. Literature was perceived as a kind of religion; writing - as a sacred act, and the writer - as a chosen and holy person - a moral and spiritual (in the figurative sense of the word) leader of society. The most popular idea about Kiril Hristov is that he is "sick of life", that his poetry is hedonistic, that he is a singer of love, but this is true only to some extent. There are only a few "hedonistic" lyrical works by Kiril Hristov. The more important problem in his poetry is the poet's dramatic impossibility to identify with the society, which is in spiritual and moral decay, the broken ties and conflict with it, and the drama of the chosen one in the ‘dead’ world of the others.

Българската литература по време на войните 1912 – 1918: между фикцията и действителността

Following an almost century-long tradition, Bulgarian literature written during the period 1912 – 1918 has always been considered feeble, nondescript, and unproductive, even a “dead strip” after a popular metaphor by Georgi Bakalov. This paper (which is part of a larger study on the same topic) argues against the easy popularity of this opinion, based on a research on the literature, literary criticism and journalism of the period in question. It provides reasons for a deviation from tradition interpretation. Besides, it poses two new questions never debated so far: which are the exact temporal boundaries of the period, and is it possible to perceive it as a homogenous entity? In the light of literary history, the paper is focused on the early years of 1912 – 1918 period: from the fall of 1912 to the fall of 1913 when the two Balkan wars took place.

Майчината любов в прозата на Георги Райчев – идентичност и проблематичност

The text interprets the concepts of faith, reason, love and madness in the context of several stories written by Georgy Raychev. At the same time, the author draws attention to the intertextual connections that Raychev`s prose builds in order to explain the problematic side of motherhood. Although the emphasis is on the story “Mother`s Faith”, the study goes beyond it to seek an explanation for the dramatic conflicts that the mother`s soul goes through while standing on the verge of madness.

The present research focuses on Yordan Valchev’s collection of stories about the Second World War called ‘Fights’ (‘Boeve’). The problem of guilt is analyzed in the context of otherness. The main thesis in the discussion is the lack of stereotyping of the other – the Germans, Hungarians, Serbians, Russians are just like the Bulgarians, similar in their fate, thoughts, actions, sacrifices, and not blaming the enemy for their failures and misfortunes.

„Прометеята“ на Смирненски – един компаративистичен казус и неговите методологически импликации

The paper is part of a largescale research on the interpretations and the utilizations of the Prometheus myth in Twentieth century literature. It is focused on the thematizations of the figure of the Titan in Hristo Smirnenski’s poetry, analyzed in different contextual frames – the Bulgarian reception of the myth, the European “Prometheus paradigm”, stabilized during the Enlightenment and the Romanticism, as well as in the context of certain appropriations of the myth for the purposes of political propaganda. An attempt is made for the rationalization of the methodological implications that are inherent in the respective comparativistic case.

Архетипни образи на жената в българския модернизъм и иконографията на сецесиона – образът на Саломе

The present text takes an interest in the archetypal images of the Woman in the modernistic discourse – the melancholic woman, the heavenly woman, the sinful woman. It studies the way the Biblical character of Salome functions in the decorative stylizations of symbolism (The Town by N. Rainov, Salome’s Shadow by T. Trayanov, Salomeya by Emanuil Popdimitrov, and Salome by Al. Balabanov) and also the iconography of Secession (paintings by Gustav Klimt, Franz von Stuck, Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations of Salome by Oscar Wilde). We search the practical usages of European cultural dialogues: the modern interpretation of the character of Salome in the context of the idea for the synthesis of arts and at the same time the author interprets the processes in juxtaposition with an accent on dance, excess and floral motifs.

In this text authoress makes an attempt to demonstrate how the specific mechanisms of triangulation and coupling framed Bulgarian literary history. It is this combination of triangles and intellectual couples that preserved male domination in the face of the claims made by women's writing. The authoress shows that two women-poets had particular importance in subverting those mechanisms through a number of strategies.

Старобългарски химнографски творби в Краковския печатен октоих (1491 г.)

Based on the inhomogeneity of the texts in the first printed Octoechos (Schweipolt Fiol, Krakow 1491), the study focuses on the text's most archaic layer, which contains Old Bulgarian works by Cyrillo-Methodian disciples and was written in Bulgaria at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century. The article examines three original (non-translated) canons that form parts of the Sunday and weekday Octoechos offices. Two of them are considered to have been written by St. Clement of Ohrid: Canon to St John the Baptist (Tuesday, 2nd Tone) and Canon to Theotokos (Wednesday, 3rd Tone), both of which were very common until the 14th century in Slavic manuscripts of various origins. The third one, Canon to the Holy Trinity (Midnight Office for Sunday, 2nd Tone), is anonymous and has so far only been discovered in a single Serbian Octoechos, Gilf. 26, the National Library of Russia (14th century), while in Eastern Slavic literature it is only found in the codex under review. The specificities in the texts of Fiol’s Octoechos as well as its particular position in the written tradition of these hymnographic works are described in comparison to copies of various origins. Textological data are interpreted mostly in search of the protograph of the printed version. The collation of the texts shows that the archaic layer of the Krakow incunabulum is most probably based on at least two protographs (or antigraphs) which are indirectly related to the earliest core of the Old Bulgarian Octoechos. One was used for the Tuesday and Wednesday offices (probably through an Eastern Slavic medium), and the other (of possible South Slavic origin) was used as the source of the canon to the Holy Trinity (2nd Tone) in the Sunday office.
