Politika istine u „Izvanbrodskom dnevniku” Slobodana Novaka

This paper analyzes the novel Three Journeys (Izvanbrodski dnevnik) by Slobodan Novak, in terms of its narrative structure and literary devices that are being used to disfigure the speech produced by centres of power in both everyday and official communication. As opposed to political allegory, to which the novel has been linked so far, it is argued that a complex narrative structure and stylistically carefully crafted storytelling point to self-referentiality of the novel. The story of Magistar is framed by Magistar’s writing of manipulative techniques used by other characters against him. Writing is a successful resistance practice to manipulation of perception because it exposes the unspoken assumptions of the latter, as well as it reveals mechanisms of emotional abuse. The novel is read as a place of freedom from a one-sided interpretation referencing the political state in former Yugoslavia, demonstrating by its structure that freedom in literature is in fact entitlement of literature to be free of any type of instrumentalization.

Homoseksualnost i rodni identitet u suvremenoj hrvatskoj drami

Homosexuality and gender identity issues, although lately often thematized, are still marginalized in Croatian society. Nonetheless, these topics occur as key concepts within which dramatic conflicts and characters are evolving. The two plays which will be analyzed were awarded with Marin Držić award for the best drama text and were staged in two Croatian theaters – ZKM and Kerempuh. The interpersonal relationships within one family and people close to the family members are on display in Tomislav Zajec’s play Ono što nedostaje. The main focus is on the sixteen-year-old David, who, appart from finding a way to communicate with his parents, has to struggle with his sexuality and the desire to be accepted and loved. In terms of speech and physical act his inner struggle is the greatest dramatic conflict and resolution at the same time, so his homosexuality is not in the focus of the play. The second play Ja od jutra nisam stao by Una Vizek addresses the issue of gender identity in today’s society. The author of the play attributes female characteristics to men by taking into account social prejudices and expectations. Each character is indicated with a number and their replica exchange is the usual form of a female chatter. The aim of this research is to show which strategies are used by authors to show the marginalization of the mentioned social groups, how characters are starting a conversation or losing the right to speak but also how they are entering into a dramatic conflict.

Poetika splitskih rubnih usmenoknjiževnih oblika

The paper presents the overview of peripheral oral forms recorded in Split and its immediate surroundings in the form of written and inscribed graffiti. In contemporary theory of literature, peripheral oral forms are described as a part of the non-fictional literature mostly defining stories from everyday life. What certainly intrigues readers and observers of these forms is their accentuated and dominant humor. Therefore, in the corpus of selected oral texts written in graffiti in the area of Split, we will present the context of the so-called everlasting Mediterranean satire. Through the graffiti, as a part of the literary structure, the poetics of short literary forms will be analyzed as the closest forms in the literary reality of previously determined (modern) proverbs and aphorisms. The aim of the paper is to present, first of all, graffiti located in Split, in the domain of peripheral oral texts, presenting their poetics which includes unusual communication, whereupon the author addresses the target recipient or the group of recipients. Particular attention will be given to a review of the specifics of graffiti in the world of peripheral oral forms in which the recipient is an active participant (Tomašić 2011), who replies to her/his own graffiti text, changing it and often erasing it, thus creating new forms and (re)shaping the recorded everyday life stories.

Mediteran u hrvatskoj književnosti i kulturi. Pogled izvana

Croatian literature and culture belong to the three neighboring civilizational and cultural circles: the Mediterranean, the Central European and the Balkanian. The role of each respective circle and the proportions among them depend on the place and the historical context in question. In both diachronic and synchronic perspectives, Croatian culture is an illustrative example of a polycentric and (cross)border culture whose identity is primarily Mediterranean and Central European. Its uniqueness, originality and unity stem from the richness and diversity of the cultural content of which it is composed. The Mediterranean component as a whole is very diverse and complex. This paper examines the importance of the categories of space and place in the humanities and the role of the Mediterranean in Croatian culture.

Pierwsza wśród nierównych – przypadek Anki Topić

During four decades of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina, economic, social and cultural circumstances had improved, as well as the position of women, who started participating in public life as educational workers, translators and writers. In this article, special attention is drawn to Anka Topić, first Bosnian-Herzegovinian women poet, who in 1909 published an individual collection of poems Lost Star (Izgubljena zvijezda). The analysis focuses on her transformation from a poet altruistically celebrating the transnational brotherhood and unity of all peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the romantic folklore spirit, to a tribune writing occasional poems to Croatian notables in Bosnia and Herzegovina and propagating the idea of a strictly Croatian Bosnia in the realms of the Monarchy.

Sudbina pjesništva na rubu hrvatskoga kulturnoga prostora na primjeru Stipana Bešlina iz Bačke

This paper presents a brief review of the position of poetry written by Šokci Croats in the context of Croatian poetry in the part of Bačka that belongs to Vojvodina. Particular attention is placed upon the poet Stipan Bešlin, who lived in the inter-war period. We analyse the representation of the mentioned poet on Croatian ground during his life till nowadays. In addition, Bešlin’s poetry is thematically reviewed; his poetry, his stylistic and linguistic choices are researched. It is shown that Bešlin’s poetic destiny is marginalised from different aspects. He is marginalised as a šokavian poet from Bačka, and as a poet who is Catholic as well as a poet whose first book of poems was published thirty years after his death, in a politically inconvenient moment. The poems Bešlin wrote short before his early death are considered his best poetic work.

Raz jeszcze o liryce kajkawskiej sprzed odrodzenia narodowego – uwagi o repertuarze gatunkowym

Old Kajkavian literature or, Kajkavian literature before the Croatian National Revival, remains relatively unstudied and poorly integrated into the corpus of Croatian national literature. Its peripheral status is mostly due to the political and national-identity-forming processes occurring since the 1830s where the key role was given to Štokavian literature. When Kajkavian literature was studied, the focus was placed predominantly on the printed books. Unlike pre-Revival Kajkavian prose, where the author was in most cases known and the prose was printed, Kajkavian lyric poetry was chiefly preserved as anonymous and in manuscript form. None of the numerous preserved Kajkavian collections of poems have been published in a critical edition, not even recently. The topic of this paper is Pjesmarica Nikole Šafrana (Nikola Šafran’s Collection of Poems), the largest manuscript collection which, along with several Latin poems, contains more than 180 Kajkavian secular poems. Its large size, a significant number of poems which also appear in other Kajkavian collections, as well as its generic and thematic diversity make this collection representative, and a good subject for a detailed research of both the collection’s generic content and the poetic traits of Kajkavian secular lyric poetry.

Feministički i spisateljski angažman Adele Milčinović na početku 20. stoljeća

Adela Milčinović, a Croatian writer with European and American address, a tireless worker in the struggle for women and children’s rights in Croatia in the first decades of the 20th century, is rarely mentioned in the history of Croatian literature as a self-employed writer, and more often just as the wife of the Croatian writer Andrew Milčinović and a coauthor of a collection of short stories entitled Pod branom (1903). In addition to her writing engagement, especially ignored and unexplored remains her feminist engagement in the time when Croatian female writers were not seriously understood in their intentions and contribution to the modern literature, being placed in its periphery, which can be perceived from the description of “Domaće ognjište,” a magazine in which women writers appeared with their first contributions, as the work of “mostly gentle hearts” (Matoš, 1976: 40). This paper presents Milčinović’s remarkable feminist engagement, reflected in the texts she wrote, which are mostly reviews of the negative critiques of the Croatian writers on “female” writing in Croatia at the turn of the century and in the first decades of the 20th century. Furthermore, we have raised the question whether the feminist engagement of the writer influenced her narrower writing interest, which will be researched by answering the question to what extent Milčinović’s female characters could be a reflection of the time the writer belonged to, which saw the major changes in Croatia both in literary and social terms.

Preispitivanje položaja Marije Jurić Zagorke u hrvatskoj književnosti

The emphasis of the paper is on the linguistic analysis of fragments from the novel Grička vještica written by Marija Jurić Zagorka. The paper objective is to answer how much linguistic craftsmanship defined this novel, and thus the literary work of Zagorka in general. It has been shown how language and literature in Zagorka’s writing intertwine. The language of the novel was analysed by extracting concrete fragments in which the lexics, stylistic figures and additional features of Zagorka’s style of writing were analysed. We researched how much attention was given to the language in building the plot. The arising question is how justified the position of Zagorka outside the literary canon is if her writing style does not differ significantly from the writers who are included in the canon.

Usmena književnost u povijestima hrvatske književnosti

Oral literature exists as long as humankind. Through history, that kind of literature was known as folk, anonymous, folklore, traditional, peasant (during the reign of Croatian Peasant Party). Oral literature is the tradition of written literature. In the past, oral literature was often given more attention than the written, and sometimes it was neglected. A great interest in folk literature emerged in the Renaissance period. Michel de Montaigne was enthusiastic about folk poetry and since his time term folk literature has been in use. The oral literature has reached its peak of popularity during the Romanticism. Approach to the oral literature in Croatian histories of literature is fourfold. Some literary historians barely mention it in their histories. Others speak of it peripherally when dealing with, for example, Petar Hektorović, Ivan Gundulić, Andrija Kačić Miošić, and many others. Some literary historians write about both oral (folk) and written literature in their histories of literature. The final approach is by those authors who have written histories of oral (folk) literature. Some literary historians have written histories of oral literature. Maja Bošković-Stulli in collaboration with Divna Zečević dedicated the first book of 1978 edition Povijest hrvatske književnosti: u sedam knjiga to the oral literature. In that history, the authors wrote about folk literature alongside the oral. In 1990 Tvrtko Čubelić published a monograph Povijest i historija usmene narodne književnosti. Marko Dragić published Poetika i povijest hrvatske usmene književnosti in 2008 and Stipe Botica published Povijest hrvatske usmene književnosti in 2013.

Književno stvaralaštvo manjina u Hrvatskoj – dio hrvatske književnosti ili ne?

There are numerous national minorities in Croatia supported by the state in their maintenance of minority languages, cultures and traditions. And many of these minorities with songs, dance and customs cherish their own literature, meaning poetry, prose, and drama written by their members in minority languages or in Croatian. These works are mostly known among members of the minorities, but sometimes it is difficult to find the way to readers of the majority of the population. An example of such a minority literature with a long tradition is literary creation of the Czech, who have been living in today’s Croatia for over two hundred years. Nowadays regularly or occasionally there are about thirty authors who write mostly in Czech, but to come to the readership, some of them have been translating their work into the Croatian language lately or leaving their mother tongue and starting to create in Croatian. Are Croatia’s minority works known and to what extent? What are the possibilities of writers using minority languages to publish their works? Why are minority literary works important, what can they offer to a broader readership and in what way can they enrich Croatian literature? How could they reach the majority population and could they wake up the interest beyond Croatian borders? And what difficulties do minority writers encounter? In the presentation, we will use the example of Czech minority literary works in Croatia to answer these and other issues related to minority literature emerging in Croatia, but remaining unknown to the Croatian public.

Zum Code-Switching in der Sprache der herzegowinischen Gastarbeiter im Werk Legende o rodijaku Ćipi

During the 1960s many citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina fled from the country because of economical reasons and went to German-speaking regions, such as Austria or Germany. The communication in German of those so-called Gastarbeiters was influenced by the vocabulary of building contractors and the automobile industry. Their language had flaws on the morphological and syntactic level so that it led to intrasententional code-switching between the Croatian and German language (for example Max je Libig bio sredovječni viši knjigovođa u Arbeitsamtu za grad Perlach). This paper presents examples of this contact language phenomenon in the novel Legende o rodijaku Ćipi where the author Petar Miloš tells an authentic, amusing and humorous story about the everyday life of the Gastarbeiters, who in this case come from the northwestern regions of Herzegovina. We analyse code-switching on the morphological and syntactic levels as well as the sociolinguistic motivation that can lead to code-switching (such as the absence of an adequate word, distance from a speech community, identity issues, emphasis of a point, etc.).

Kovačeva priča o izopštavanjima (Životopis Malvine Trfifković)

Since it was first published, Malvina has attracted attention of a wide professional and non-professional readership, primarily as a narrative about Serbian-Croatian hatred and as the first lesbian novel in the South Slavic world. It was not only the choice of narrative forms but also that of the topic that marks Kovač’s text as open to those forms of social life placed on the margins of society and exposed to repression. Kovač builds up ironic outlines of the codes of socio-cultural milieus and of all the forms of social power, providing a parodic image of social morality based on subversive mechanisms and partial truths. The social, political, ideological, religious, ethic, and aesthetic models of the world through which one perceives reality are established in the absence of emancipated action and choice. Prohibitions and limitations, stereotypes, and taboos, and, on the opposite side, transgression (breaking of boundaries) of all the proscriptions, are the object of redescription in this work.

Mirko Kovač - Grad u zrcalu

Mirko Kovač, one of the most famous domestic authors, is an artist who is equally successful in the descriptions of the Montenegrin, Croatian and Serbian cultural milieu, which gives his prose extra-regional and universal attribute. Based on all reliable and proven peculiarities of narrative manners painted by the modern creative process, with a variety of innovative structuring techniques and often naturalistic depicted fragments, his first novels Gubiliste (1962), My Sister Elida (1965) and The Biography of Malina Trifkovic (1971), as well as a collection novels Wounds of Luka Meštrović (1971) announce a new and unusual name on the literary scene of the former Yugoslav territories. In the work Mirko Kovač - A City in a Mirror, author Sofija Kalezić illuminates psychomental and physical portraits of literary characters of heroes who pervade the pages of this novel, from narrator’s mother to his first love and other heroes.

Pripovjedni postupci u tvorbi sjećanja (Mirko Kovač, Grad u zrcalu)

The paper analyses the narrative forming of personal and family memories in the family chronicle The City in the Mirror by Mirko Kovač. The mechanism of writing out memories through the mediation of the characters and spaces (houses, cities) is subverted at the same time, whereby different narrative strategies can be discerned: 1. In his autoreferential notes, the narrator emphasises a lack of equivalence between life and memory and his own subjective will to speak about selected events and in the order established by he himself; 2. His memory is also objectively disrupted by interrupting family and kinship ties and by wars and floods, which change the space and people’s way of life; 3. Family memory which precedes the narrator’s life is mediated by the remembered stories of the focalisers, older family members; 4. The narrator connects the space of childhood and growing up with the destinies of peculiar people who lived in it, so his writing memories means the creation of personal geography too. The titular metaphor of the city in the mirror refers to the city as the main character, identified with people who live in it or reflect about it, and the heterotopic character of memories, fixed in the written text like in the mirror, but deprived of the real geographic space. Thereby memory gains the status of one of the possible interpretations of life.

Kategorije vremena u romanu Grad u zrcalu Mirka Kovača

The organization of story time in the novel: City in the mirror was established thanks to the value attitude and psychological attitude of the main romance hero that is author himself, who is secretly behind both the self and the narrative instance and through which he communicates. From these central subjects of the narrative structure of the novel and their interaction in the narrative text (the replacement of the narrative self and experienced self ) depends also others narrative elements among which stands out time and space as unavoidable elements of fabular, compositional and the size of the novel. The aim of this paper is to explain in more details temporal categories of the narrated and to interpret to readers the most accurate picture of “double temporality” of the atormentioned novel discourse, using Zenet’s theoretical modalities of time. Structural elements of interpretation of the title topic in it’s theoretical and critical context will be focused on the analysis of the following segments: time of story and time of storytelling; order of narrative anarchy; types of prolepsis and analepses; rhythm of storytelling and narrative pace.

PRIPOVJEDAČ IVO ANDRIĆ PRVI DIO: KO TO TAMO GOVORI? (PITANJE “GLASA” U ANDRIĆEVOJ PROZI)

Zanimljivo je da veliko Andrićevo književno djelo u prošlim decenijama gotovo nikad nije bilo predmet sistematičnih naratoloških analiza, iako se već tokom 1970-ih godina upravo naratologija u svijetu bila afirmirala kao najdosljedniji oblik tada predominantnog, strukturalističkog mišljenja. Možda je to bilo zato što se klasična naratologija, u težnji da uspostavi gramatiku narativnog teksta, odlučno ogradila od hermeneutike, koja se, u principu, oduvijek usredsređivala na tumačenje značenja teksta. A upravo je hermeneutički prilaz tekstu bio najuobičajeniji kritički pristup Andrićevom djelu. S rijetkim izuzecima, kritičari su, radije nego Andrićevo narativno umijeće, tumačili njegov “svijet”, i to koliko povijesnu osnovu tog svijeta toliko i njegove metafizičke implikacije. Bez sumnje, takvo kritičko opredjeljenje provocirao je sam Andrićev autorski princip: ne uplitati se u priču, već pustiti da ona sama ponese svoja značenja. A to je onda od kritičara zahtijevalo upravo hermeneutički pristup tekstu, a ne naratološku analizu njegovog tkanja.

Hodnotná literatura, nebo šestákový brak? Narativ v románech Marie Jurićové Zagorky

The paper is focused on literary works of Marie Juricová Zagorka (1873‒1957) in the context of a Croatian novel. Her serial works were immensely popular, yet often considered to be of lesser literary value. Although her narration draws from canonized model of realistic historical fiction her works are branded by institutional critique as popular trash mostly for uneducated (female) readers. My attention is paid to the gender norms in the context of literary fiction, problem of exclusionary apparatus of cultural gender within patriarchy and gendered power relation of binary system. From that point of view Zagorka’s multifaceted non-stereotypical concept of feminized experience and femininity, is considered “threatening”. In the aim for a different, more balanced, view on her literary work we are posing a question if negative assessment of her works, can be perceived as gendered discipline of female that crossed the gender boundaries.
