TRANSLATION QUALITY ASSESSMENT AT THE CROSSROADS OF ETHNOLINGUISTICS AND ETHNOGRAPHY: TARAS SHEVCHENKO’S “IRZHAVETS” IN ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS

Ethnographic approaches to understanding a text and its cultural values have been scarcely developed from the viewpoint of linguistic verification in translation criticism. Methods of studying cultural material which focus on the environment and behavior can be borrowed from Ethnography for identifying and assessing cultural values in the texts of an original and a translation. The case study is performed on the key personality in Ukrainian cultural history, the poet, artist and thinker Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) whose poetic texts turned out to be prophetical for constructing the Ukrainian political nation out of ethnic mass and building the future Ukrainian nation-state.

Ідилічний хронотоп у романі «Непрості» Тараса Прохаська

The article focuses on the standard features of different idyllic chronotope associated with the unity of the folklore period. Emphasis is placed on the inseparability of human life from a particular place where ancestors lived and where descendants will live. In Taras Prohasko’s novel “The UnSimple”, great importance is attached to family traditions, according to which children at the age of fifteen were shown places related to family history. M. Bakhtin calls this feature the unity of place. This feature unites generations, blurs the time boundaries between the individual life of each person and different periods of the same life. The rhythmic cycle of time is demonstrated in the novel “The UnSimple” on the example of Sebastian and his Anna, who was the only possible woman in his life. In Taras Prokhasko’s novel, the opinion is affirmed that the home for most people is an idyllic place, the basis of biography and the result of existence. It is a place where a person feels protected and confident. The relationship between man and nature in work is shown idealized. Through an exaggerated image of floriculture, the author offers an alternative world in which a responsible, caring, careful attitude to the world around us prevails. It is proved that in Taras Prohasko’s novel “The UnSimple”, the landscape is both a necessary and sufficient condition for a complete human life. It was found that the most important place in T. Prokhasko’s prose is given to the epic of family places, which are the basis of the idyllic chronotope.

The first lady of the Ukrainian poetry, as she is oft en described, Lesia Ukrainka (1871–1913) left not only a very valuable poetical heritage (poetry, dramaturgy, prose, literary criticism) but also an extremely interesting epistolography, thanks to which researchers can better understand her literary works and extraordinary personality, which can be represented by many images: an image of a woman, a daughter, a friend, a beloved, and a Ukrainian patriot. A letter is a specific literary genre which is now widely studied by researchers. Lesia Ukrainka’s letters are characterised by a unique epistolographic narration in which she presented her life and work. Her letters are very vivid, spontaneous, oft en have the form of polemics or confessions, contain her observations regarding the psychology of creativity as well as some draft s of her upcoming literary works. To some extent, they may serve as the record of the times and the lives that the contemporary Ukrainian intelligence lived. But first and foremost, Lesia Ukrainka’s letters are the source of knowledge about the poetess herself, her numerous roles, and the way her personality was created as a result of many hardships, dilemmas, and struggle. The present paper aims at presenting the selected roles of Lesia Ukrainka in order to draw her psychological portrait, to show her individuality, and to bring closer her image not only of a great poetess, which is quite commonly known, but the image of the woman who lived her own life and destiny.

Парадокси екзистенції у щоденниках Євгена Маланюка

The article discusses the paradoxes of existence as represented in Diaries of Yevhen Malanyuk (1897–1968), one of the most influential Ukrainian poets and intellectuals of the twentieth century. Taking into account Malanyuk’s biography and poetic heritage, three types of the image of “the author” have been distinguished: the internal author (Malanyuk’s voice presented in his personal papers and writings not meant for publication), the external author (Malanyuk’s perception by his contemporaries), and the reflected author (Malanyuk’s voice revealed in his publications). Malanyuk’s Diaries present the image of the internal author, which differs from the image readers are accustomed to encounter in his published works. In Diaries paradoxes are revealed in Malanyuk’s attitude towards his contemporaries, friends, political and historical events.

The article analyzes the autobiographical novel ”In the Kingdom of Wardens” written by the prominent Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Ivasiuk. It substantiates that in his novel the author exposes true Soviet reality and the Stalinist dictatorship; he condemns totalitarianism and the dictatorship of communist power. The main attention is drawn on the psychology of the artist, who under conditions of exile and isolation from his native land managed to preserve the best human qualities, did not lose faith in returning from a long exile and serving for the benefit of the Ukrainian people.

The article engages in an attempt to survey I. Bahrianyi`s novel “The Garden of Gethsemane” on the subject of comic elements. The novel is perceived as a realistic depiction of inhumane Soviet reality, so the question of how risorial culture is blended seamlessly with the text is relevant. The aim of the article is to find out the nature of the comic as an aesthetic category, in particular its varieties: irony, sarcasm, grotesque, and to analyze how the comic functions in the novel, what forms it takes, what functions performs. The descriptive method was used during the work. In I. Bahrianyi`s novel the most frequent manifestation of the comic is irony, which is used on different levels: in journalistic excursus, in depicting the interior, exterior, and most of all – in the dialogues between characters. Humor is also an inalienable part of prisoners’ lives. As a result of processing the material, we came to the following conclusions: the theme of I. Bahrianyi`s novel “The Garden of Gethsemane” envisages a profound pathos, but the comic elements are harmoniously woven into the fabric of the text. With the help of irony and sarcasm the author supports the anti-Soviet ideology and exposes the drawbacks of the Soviet system. The discrepancy between reality and the image, created employing irony draws attention to the issue, foregrounds it. In the dialogues between the two antagonists: the investigator and the prisoner – the irony serves as a means of characterizing the depicted world and the nature of the relationship between them, outlining the author's attitude to what is being said. Irony reduces the significance of Soviet reality as if depriving it of power because it recategorizes everything: now the absurd reality inspires not terror, but disdain. This way of reacting in a borderline situation protects the psyche of prisoners from feelings of doom and persecution. For prisoners irony and humor are one of the available ways of escapism, as well as the ability to preserve the integrity of one's self.

НОВЕЛА ДЕНИСА ЛУКІЯНОВИЧА “БІЛІ НАРЦИЗИ В’ЯЛИ” В АСПЕКТІ ЖАНРУ ТА СТИЛЮ

The article considers Denys Lukiyanovich's short story “White Daffodils Withered” in terms of its genre and style specifics, motives, image system. The purpose of the research is to reveal the significance of the work for understanding the peculiarities of the literary process of the early twentieth century. The urgency of the investigation is due to the fact that the work “White Daffodils Withered” is not studied at all and is not involved in the literary context. This little-known text was first analyzed in terms of the peculiarities of combining in the author's creative style features of several trends, including Impressionism, Expressionism and Naturalism with their inherent stylistic markers, which is a novelty of the study. It is also compared with those samples of Ukrainian prose of the XIX-XX centuries, which have similar artistic features and are close in theme. Research methods. The article is based on the use of a systematic approach to the object of study. This approach involves the use of traditional descriptive method and its key techniques: observation, interpretation and generalization (to clarify the originality of the author's style of D. Lukiyanovich, its connection with the code of contemporary literature). Also, in order to compare D. Lukiyanovych's artistic sample with other materials (scientific and artistic), the method of contextual-interpretive analysis is used: thanks to him the status of D. Lukiyanovych's work is established in relation to other artistic samples, its place in sociocultural context, not to mention author's ideas, motives and goals, general content of questions etc. Conclusions. It is concluded that in terms of genre specifics, this work is close to a short story, namely “mood short story”, it is an original manifestation of the writer's creative style, which in this case is the syncretism of stylistic, genre and generic features.

The purpose of the article is to establish the main positional characteristics of the expression of the nominations of the addressee of speech in the modern Ukrainian literary language. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the positional characteristics of the expression of the nominations of the addressee of the speech have long been of interest to many Ukrainian linguists. The scientific novelty of intelligence is the introduction into scientific circulation of new factual material, clarification of the means of expression of the substantive part of the content of the appeal, development of classification of formal types of expression of nominations of the addressee in modern Ukrainian literary language. The practical significance of the work is that the results of the study can be used to describe identical or similar phenomena in other (primarily Slavic) languages, as well as in teaching courses in lexicology, morphology and syntax of the Ukrainian language. Conclusions. After studying the scientific material, we identified the following cases of using appeals: independent (autonomous), pre -, interand postposition. The main types of interposition of appeals, as evidenced by our factual material, are: position between sub ject and predicate, position between predicate and object, position before subject and predicate, position of appeals after object and predicate, position of appeals after predicate and object, the position of appeals after the subject and predicate. After analyzing the forms of appeal in prepositions, postpositions and interpositions in persuasive, interrogative and narrative sentences, w e came to the conclusion that appeals can be monosyllabic and verbose.

ЛІНГВАЛІЗАЦІЯ НЕВЕРБАЛЬНИХ ЗАСОБІВ КОМУНІКАЦІЇ НА ПОЗНАЧЕННЯ ЕМОЦІЙНОГО СТАНУ МОВЦЯ (НА МАТЕРІАЛІ ХУДОЖНІХ ТЕКСТІВ СУЧАСНИХ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ ПИСЬМЕННИКІВ)

The anthropocentric approach of modern linguistics is focused on the interest of researchers in the problems of verbal and speech expression of emotions, which can be realized through two semiotic areas – verbal, which represents the linguistic expression of emotions, and nonverbal, which is a physiological manifestation of emotions and which is an integral part of communicative act and characterizes not only the emotional state of the speaker, but also his attitude to the listener. The scientific novelty of the research is deepening knowledge of non-verbal components that express the emotional state of the speaker in the communication process; identifying the means of verbalization of non-verbal behavior of the characters in the literary text. The aim of our article is to analyze non-verbal means for identifying the emotional state of the speaker in the literary texts of modern Ukrainian writers (Irena Karpa, Serhiy Zhadan, Yuriy Andrukhovych, Yuriy Izdryk, Ivan Baidak, Andriy Lyubka, Natalia Morikvas). The relevance of scientific research is due to the need for a holistic study of non-verbal components for indication of the speaker’s emotional state in the literary text, analysis of their means of pronunciation, taking into account social and personal characteristics of the speaker in different communicative situations. The following methods and techniques of linguistic analysis are used in the article: system-functional analysis, component method, contextual-interpretive method, method of discursive analysis, method of stylistic analysis. Conclusions. The non-verbal components that were analyzed in the literary text for denotion the emotional state of the speaker accompany both positive and negative emotions of the heroes in the works of modern Ukrainian writers. We notice the prospect of a representative study in the further deepening of knowledge about the pragmatic features of non-verbal means for indication of the speaker’s emotional state taking into account age, gender, social and psychological factors in different communicative situations.

ДО ІСТОРІЇ ПІДГОТОВКИ ВИДАННЯ ТВОРІВ І. ФРАНКА У 20 ТОМАХ

The relevance of the study is motivated by the need to clarify the little-known details of the preparation of Ivan Franko’s works publication in 20 volumes, to introduce information from archival documents into scientific circulation. Elimination of gaps contributes to the development of a holistic concept of the history of multivolume collections of Ivan Franko’s works. The scientific novelty is due to the fact that the textual and source history of this collection hasn’t been the subject of scientific analysis. The purpose of the article is to investigate the time range and circumstances of preparation for the publication of works by Ivan Franko in 20 volumes; to establish the circle of involved persons who in one way or another joined the publication at different times; to outline the difficulties in implementing a new publishing project. Research methods. General scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, comparative, descriptive- chronological) are combined with special methods — source and textual, used in the search, detection, selection of sources, their comprehensive critical study, establishing the reliability and informative value of the source. Conclusions. Preparation of I. Franko's works edition in 20 volumes originates from the previous edition of works in 25 volumes. Its concept was not only discussed at the official level in the post-war period, but also concrete steps were taken towards its implementation. Adverse political circumstances of the second half of 1940s postponed the plans. The result of the conflict was the removal of M. Vozniak from the editorial board, he painfully went through the concealment of the team of Lviv scientists’ merits in the development of Ivan Franko’s legacy. The multivolume book was published during 1950–1956 and presented a large part of little-known material to the mass reader.
