In this article, we compare the basic principles that underlie five complete Russian translations of the Qur’an, made during the 20th century. We reveal that: 1) the translation by I.Yu. Krachkovskii is characterized by philological accuracy and the compliance with the historical epoch, and it has preserved its value up to our days; 2) M.-N.O. Osmanov sought the clarity of the text of the Muslim Holy Book; 3) B.Ya. Shidfar tried to exactly convey not only the factual side of the Qur’an but also its artistic features; 4) the versifications by V.M. Porokhova and T.A. Shumovskii distort the text of the Qur’an from all points of view. In conclusion we present five translations of Surah 101 “Al-Qari'a”.

The article studies derived words with stems being in suppletive relations with the stem of the productive word. In the history of Russian word-formation, these cases are qualified as suppletive word-formation. This is substantiated by the categories of historical word-formation as well as by the facts of suppletive word-formation synonymy. At the same time, this paper presents a critical assessment of the synchronic view on suppletivism in word formation.

The paper investigates oxymoron collocations based on lexical antonymy of their components and compares them with antithesis. As a result of the analysis of a new factual material, we reveal the following peculiarities of an oxymoron collocation: the relatedness of opposite qualities to one denotatum, the creation of a new quality by synthesizing the incompatible, the subordinate connection between the collocation’s components, and the required presence of quality words. We make a conclusion that oxymoron collocations selectively reflect the reality, and their purpose is to express emotions and assessments with respect to the denominated.

The article discusses the issue of the vocabulary of Baltic origin which functions in contemporary mixed Belarusian-Russian dialects. It contains analysis of the vocabulary of dialects functioning in the southern part of Pskov region – in the area of Sebezh and Nevel which once were part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The material basis was the author’s own recordings collected during a dialectological expedition carried out as a part of the TriMCo (Triangulation Approach for Modelling Convergence with a High Zoom-In Factor) project in 2014 as well as volumes of the Pskov regional dictionary (Псковский областной словарь). The southern part of Pskov region has been the place of contact of various languages and dialects (Russian, Belarusian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Yiddish). The Baltic vocabulary is connected mainly with the oldest layer of the lexis and concerns the traditional agriculture, farming, nature or features of people’s character and appearance. The material showed that the Belarusian dialect (now a mixture of Belarusian and Russian) helped to preserve words of Baltic origin. The number of words of Baltic origin is scant in those villages where there are Russian-speaking inhabitants and only few Belarusian language features. Interlocutors often highlight that they know a certain word only from their childhood and no-one describes things in that way.

The author compares key word entries of three translational dictionaries: Russian- German, Russian-Polish, and Russian-Lithuanian. These are moderately-sized dictionaries published about 1930. For their respective authors (a German, a Pole, and a Lithuanian), Russian was not their native language, and yet they each mastered it wonderfully, having spent part of their lives in the Russian Empire and in the USSR. The dictionaries studied were compiled in a period of unprecedented growth in new Russian lexis. Lexical resources expanded rapidly due to violent socio-political changes and the new phenomena they brought about that needed to be named, as well as the concomitant, equally dynamic scientific and technical advances, which also caused a substantial increase in new lexis. The level of difficulty in constructing a list of key words was increased by the lack of current Russian definition dictionaries at the time. The author has shown that the editors of the Russian-German and the Russian- Polish dictionaries, that appeared in Moscow, included abundant neologisms: the most variegated Sovietisms (e.g., агитпункт, cоциал-предатель), scientific and technical vocabulary (авиация, автомобиль), acronyms (нэп, Главрепертком), as well as borrowings from the national languages of the USSR (арык, аул). At the same time, the Russian-Lithuanian dictionary published in Kovno (Kaunas) does not include a single Sovieticism, no acronyms, no “Soviet” orientalism, even a suprisingly modest showing of scientific and technical lexis (merely a few percent of the resources included in the Moscow dictionaries). This dictionary includes numerous archaic and regional vocabulary units (e.g., чаемый, чапыжник), omitted in the remaining dictionaries.

Specialised dictionaries fulfil a plethora of linguistic and cognitive functions in specialised communication. In particular, such reference works help introduce, harmonise and standardise national terminologies, thus playing an indispensable role in disseminating high quality specialised knowledge. An even more important role may be attributed to bilingual and multilingual specialised dictionaries, whose primary goal is to facilitate the flow of scientific and technical information at an international level. This function has come to the fore in today’s multinational and interconnected professional world. In light of the developing and ever stronger cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, an attempt is being made to evaluate bilingual and multilingual terminographic works containing Polish and Ukrainian which have been published in Poland to date. The aim is to assess the positive developments and to identify the gaps in Polish-Ukrainian terminography. It is hoped that the findings presented in this paper will be applied by terminographers in order to compile terminological dictionaries of higher quality, which satisfy the needs of specific users and follow terminographic principles.

This article deals with the problems of semantic equivalence that authors of various types of dictionaries, including bilingual ones, are faced with. Words and phraseological units of common Polish and Ukrainian origin separately developed their systems of meanings in both languages, making it difficult to identify analogues that adequately reflect the semantic structure of linguistic units.
