The two perhaps most controversial thinkers of today’s French philosophico-theoretical scene, Alain Badiou and François Laruelle agree in their devotedness to the Project of re-claiming the Thought of the Radical, in spite of the critical difference between the two respective theories, consisting of the fact that the first invokes the radically philosophical (subscribing to a certain metaphysical tradition, i.e., Platonism), while the latter attempts to radically subvert any possibility for a philosophy.

Varga Béla, a filozófus

This study is aimed at throwing light on two major areas of Béla Varga’s philosophy, a prominent member of the Kolozsvár school of thought, philosopher-theologist. On the one hand his answers regarding existence, meaning and values are sought. In this respect emphasis is put on the cognitive activities of the spirit. On the other hand it is also examined how the covert general connections mentioned above are concretised in the interpretation of individuality, soul and belief. Comparison with other contemporary theories (Sándor Tavaszy, Sándor Makkai) concerning beliefs and Christian fate are also distinctly emphasised.

Charakterystyczne rysy filozofii polityki Mieczysława A. Krąpca

Prof. Mieczysław A. Krąpiec (1921–2008) — one of the most eminent Polish philosophers, the main creator of the Lublin School of Philosophy. His conception of politics is presented in such publications as: ‘Toward a Human Politics’ (also issued under the title ‘Man and Politics’), ‘Sovereignty — Whose?’, ‘Person and Natural Law’, ‘Human Freedom and Its Limits’. Therein, he indicates that what gives meaning to and constitutes the ultimate purpose of one’s engagement in politics is the focus on the human being. The scope of this article is defined by four issues determining the uniqueness of Krąpiec’s political philosophy. First, his classical conception of philosophy, due to which Krąpiec does not confine himself to studying political phenomena, but embarks on a quest for the underlying determinants of the complex political reality. Second, his notion of the human being as a creature oriented at their own personal development and therefore inevitably connected to the community. In this respect Krąpiec is critical of Hobbesian anthropology which ignores the potentiality-actuality dichotomy of human nature and considers man a perfect, autonomous and autotelic being. Third, his conceptualization of the common good as personal development of each and every member of a political community. It is this development that the state, with all its organizational elements, including the material means as well as the legal and institutional structure, should serve. And fourth, his respect for the close relationship between politics and the sphere of moral functioning of the human being, which constitutes the basis for an analysis of Machiavelli’s mistake.

Juoko Teorijos Juok(Ingum)As: Pro Et Contra Henri Bergson

The article deals with the classical tractate “On Laughter” by Henry Bergson (1900) and, more precisely, with the problem that a critical analysis of the tractate reveals: is it possible to have a theory of laughter, is laughter susceptible to rational scrutiny, or what if the basic formal assumptions of classical essentialistic philosophy are the very ones that hinder us from understanding our experience of the phenomenon in question? The article shows that Bergson’s approach on laughter is inconsistent with his explicit aims and general intuitivism, context-blind and has very limited explicative scope. Finaly, in contrast, the article claims that laughter is better understood by defining it rather negatively.

Taylor's aim is both to point out the negative symptoms of modernity and to diagnose the underlying disease and propose treatment.

On the Contemporary Practice of Philosophy of Mathematics

In this paper I propose to reflect on contemporary philosophy of mathematics. I argue that the impartiality to methodology that is present in the current practice of philosophy of mathematics is an intellectual vice of our research community because it leaves our philosophical methods to engage with mathematics implicit. This hides difficulties our research community faces, difficulties our students can reasonably expect to learn about and which we need to engage with to overcome them. To be virtuously open-minded about methodology is not to be impartial about methodology but rather to critically assess the proposals on offer in a public debate.

Purpose of the article: to investigate the phenomenon of genius on the example of the work of the poet-futurist Mikhail Semenko, taking as the basis the theory about the genius developed by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Methodology. The methodology of the study is to apply comparative-historical, biographical and psychological methods. Scientific Novelty. In work, for the first time, the assumption is made that the creative work of the Ukrainian poet-futurist Mikhail Semenko is acknowledged as a genius, that is, having: signs of the highest degree of manifestation of creative abilities of the author; influence on changes in the cultural and artistic environment; overtime. Conclusions. The works of the founder of Ukrainian futurism, Mikhail Semenko, are original in the own way, have become exemplary for a large number of contemporary poets, created the prerequisites for the development of a new cultural and artistic direction in the history of the twentieth century. (socialist realism), and are such as to reflect events that are ahead of the time of the writing of works, and therefore correspond to all the signs of the theory of genius, developed by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant.

Naslov u iščekivanju svoga opravdanja sabire niz poteškoća. Najveća među njima sa sobom, čini se, iznosi pitanje mogućnosti oblikovanja i opravdanosti jedne takve teme. Stoga je istom potrebno zacrtati da tema koju isporučuje naslov ove razrade ne upućuje toliko na dugovječni problem podrijetla filozofije koliko na sam izvor filozofijskog mišljenja. Naime, riječ je o potrebi da stvari promislimo drukčije od toga kako ih uobičajeno vidimo, ali to u čemu se sastoji drukčije viđenje stvari izostajat će nam sve dok samo mišljenje kao viđenje ostaje ovakvo kakvo jest. Mišljenje se, prema Heideggeru, udaljuje od svoje biti što se više pokazuje kao računajuće mjerljivo, matematičko, u svojoj osnovi kao ono tehničko. Na koncu, takva vrsta misaonosti nije ništa drugo nego volja da se stvar kao predmet dovede pod svoju vlast.

Habermasova kritika Rawlsove teorije pravednosti

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate Habermas' critique of Rawls' theory of justice as fairness by reviewing Habermas’ study published in 1995 in The Journal of Philosophy, titled "Reconciliation through the Public Use of Reason: Remarks on John Rawls’ Political Liberalism". The primary goal in reviewing this critique was to point out the fact that the different theories developed by these authors share a common ground. Furthermore, another goal was to show the relationship between these theories understood precisely through the prism of Habermas' critique. This paper uses an analytical model approach to philosophical text, and, through that, provides direct insight into the Habermas' study.

The article deals with the main ideas expounded in P. Trawny`s book “Heidegger`s Fragments“ and his evaluation of Heidegger. P. Trawney shows Heidegger`s attempts to raise objections to the ideas of straightforward understandability and transparency of language, being practised by a large number of philosophers of the day. Heidegger`s thought is aimed at preservation of a certain kind of freedom by way of linguistic efforts. “I have forgotten the thought that makes for the upheaval of life” – the author of the book writes in order to characterise the situation when Heidegger engaged in philosophy in the twenties of the 20th century. Heidegger`s texts demonstrate his attempts to obtain or to re-gain the thought “that makes for the upheaval of life”. What was the historical background for these attempts? Is it possible to use these texts (and the nascent thought about the upheaval of life) also for the present time?

This study deals with Adrian Marino’s hermeneutical work developed in the 1970s – a pioneer of Romanian culture, given the intellectual climate of that age –, based on his writings on Mircea Eliade’s hermeneutics and the hermeneutics of literature. This hermeneutical achievement is examined from two aspects: first, we try to follow the justification of Marino’s basic hypothesis that Mircea Eliade’s aims to unfold the meanings of the different historical forms in the universal religious mythology and system of symbols, are in fact not only studies of the history of religion, anthropology or phenomenology, but in fact evolve as a universal hermeneutical theory of Gadamerian proportions. On the other hand, we attempt to show the insufficiencies and limitations of Marino’s hermeneutical outlook, which are inherent to his structuralist approach and his commitment to an epistemological-methodological view. Confronting Marino’s problems with Eliade’s remarks and the related thoughts of Gadamer and Ricoeur, this study concludes that Marino’s specific misapprehensions on the hermeneutical conception emerge precisely from the hermeneutical situation that is the medium of his research, and that these misapprehensions are in fact hermeneutically prolific.

Structural Realism in Biology: A (Sympathetic) Critique

Structural realism holds that ontological commitments induced by successful scientific theories should focus on the structures rather than the objects posited by the theories. Thus structural realism goes beyond the empirical adequacy criterion of traditional (or constructive) empiricism. It also attempts to avoid the problems scientific realism faces in contexts of radical theory change accompanied by discordant shifts in posited theoretical objects. Structural realism emerged in the context of attempts to interpret developments in twentieth-century physics. In a biological context, Stanford (2006) provided pre-emptive criticism. French (2011, 2012) has since attempted to answer those criticisms and extend structural realism to the biological realm. This paper argues that, though Stanford’s criticism may be misplaced, and structural realism fares much better than traditional scientific realism in biological contexts, it remains a promissory note. The promise is based on shifting the focus of the debate from the status of biological laws to that of biological organization, an issue that remains a live debate within biology.
