The article presents some questions connected with the role of image in ritual communication based on the example of polish news bulletins. I focused my analyse on this kind of programme, because of its popularity. The aim of this research is to analyse the usage of visual content of news bulletins and its role in the perception of information. Images are also important from the perspective of ritual communication. They strengthen the verbal message and broaden the control mechanisms over the recipient. There are several question that can be asked here. What pictures are used to convey message? In what context they appear? How the usage of picture changes according to a kind of the presented information? What is the relation between verbal and visual message?

Searching for a nuclear settlement. European Union nuclear settlement with Iran

In the article is analyzed European Union crisis diplomacy with Iran, which finally brought to the final settlements. Beside the nuclear issues, in EU and Iran relations are visible other issues, as such as: human rights, security, energy and trade. In the 90’s and 2000’s EU proposed the formula critical and comprehensive dialogue. Now after nuclear settlement, crisis diplomacy with Iran is essential, due to the problems and challenges related with internal Iranian politics and its regional policy.

The European Union’s cultural policy: the new tasks?

The debate on European cultural policy has only just begun. What is intended to be the object is unknown. Topics taken during the European Culture Congress have the general nature and are only an introduction to critical reflection on what today is the European culture. Even if the answer seems obvious that these cultures of the Member States, we still do not know whether it will be called. “High culture”, remaining in the elite circle of interest, or so. “Pop culture”? Perhaps the answer is indirect, and refers to the culture that we do not know from the media, the internet,billboards and banner ads, but rather that which we know through membership in a particular social group, religious community, and most of all family.

the author explores how the internet and the new media are changing the way that we communicate, act and think, individually and collectively, through the example of the occupy Wall Street Movement. the author claims that the occupy Movement, as a post-narrative project conceived in a digital environment, is less of a political activity, and more a new way of behavior for its members and for the society at large. Its focus on consensus building and its modus operandi are reflecting the principles of the Internet, web-organization and cooperation. therefore, its success is not about achieving any particular political aim, or winning an election, but about the general acceptance of these values and their becoming part of a wider political agenda.

joint effect of 2008 economic crises and continous world-wide present deficite of political legitimacy have in 2011 given birth to global resistance, but also facilitated development of its new strategies and tactics. aldough we are still by large able to understand these contemporary models of collective action with help of new Social Movement theory, today they objectivelly grasp a wider field of meaning, mainly for reason of their demands for radical transformation of both economic and political system. Contemporary social movements are still struggling for re-interpretation of meaning, and identity issues, but not any more for any particular goal. Instead, they seek systemic change. this extremelly important shift of strategic orientation, which makes new movements a bit old – that is classical, remains in our oppinion, undervalued both in academic, and general public for the reasons that we will try to comprehend, in this writing.

Aluzyjny eurosceptycyzm w debatach prezydenckich w 2015 roku

Foreign policy was not a significant part of the presidential campaign. It has been dominated by Russia and the issue of NATO bases in eastern Europe. Although Poles are among the biggest supporters of European integration, as a result of immigration crisis the group of people dissatisfied with European decisions, considered as a violation of sovereignty is growing. Since such persons are not opponents of integration as such, candidates resorted to more or less euro-skeptic speech. Some of them used the allusive Euro-skepticism to speak as supporters of integration and the presence of Polish EU and at the same time indicate the areas in which Poland will not agree to EU regulations.

The Eurasian Economic Union: between co-existence, confrontation and cooperation with the EU

The article analyses integration process in the post-soviet space as well as Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) as a product of Eurasian integration. The EEU as newly created integration structure has a problem of fending the suitable form of interrelations with the European Union– the biggest integration structure ever.The issue of fending common grounds between the EEU and the EU especially important given the fact that the Eurasian Union is a bloc led by Russia – one of the biggest European trade partner and long-standing political counterpart, which within a couple of years is at odds with the EU due to the political problems, connected with the Ukrainian conﬂict as well as the geopolitical tension between Russia and the West.The start of the dialogue between the EU and the EEU, which has the certain potential, seems rather unlike to place in short- and medium-term perspective. In order to start the dialogue both parties have to solve not only economic issues (institutionalization of relationship, harmonization of trade), but also improve political agenda by starting to elaborate a joint agenda.The main point for the time being: the interrelationship between the EEU and the EU could evolve within the co-existence scenario, which envisages maintenance of the current status-quo– non institutionalized relationship. In order to change it as well as to single out the appropriate approach for framing the future relationship with the Eurasian Economic Union the European Union should take into account many factors, putting the special emphasis on the Russia’s role within the EEU as well as conﬂicting nature of Eurasian project, which is only to prove its viability as integration structure.

It is a common opinion that a candidate holding public office finds it easier to win the election. He or she already has some achievements, and the electorate knows them. The candidate can also use the subordinate administrative apparatus in the electoral campaign. The article presents the results of content analysis of the websites of small municipalities during the election campaign in 2014. It attempts to answer the following question: Do websites of local governments promote municipalities, or are they treated instrumentally by mayors in office for self-promotion purposes?

Młodzi wyborcy jako audytorium „dyskursu zmiany” w 2015 roku

This article focuses on the election campaigns in 2015 (both presidential and parliamentary) in the context of the various rhetoric styles applied by the political parties. In times of the mediatization of politics and permanent campaigns political competition is primarily taking place outside formal institutions, having moved into the sphere, first and foremost, of the mass media. This reveals a conflict of two discourses at the level of political rhetoric: on the one hand it is a ‘discourse of change’ (progressive rhetoric) created by the opposition parties and, on the other hand, ‘a discourse of continuity’ (conservative rhetoric), which seems to be the means of political communication used by the ruling parties. The main purpose of the article is an analysis of Polish students’ opinions on important social and political issues and an attempt to define this age group in terms of the ‘electorate of change’. The conclusions should be helpful in explaining the reasons for the high level of support given to opposition parties by young voters in Poland.

Postawy polskich dziennikarzy wobec aktorów politycznych: badania empiryczne

The aim of the paper is to compare the findings of selected surveys conducted among Polish journalists with the findings of a newspaper content analysis. The findings of the surveys showed differences between different generations of journalists. Specifically, those who entered the profession right after the political transition in the early 1990s seem more interested in playing the role of watchdog than those who have recently graduated from universities. Although the youngest generation of Polish journalists believes that the media should monitor political actors, they do not seem very interested in playing that role. The findings of the content analysis showed that Polish journalists pay significant attention to monitoring the policy and performance of political actors. The study supports previous observations on the high level of political parallelism of the Polish media system.

Relacjonowanie prezydenckiej kampanii wyborczej w 2015 roku przez „Wiadomości” TVP1: zrównoważone czy stronnicze?

In contemporary democratic state there is expected the mass media to serve several roles: informing voters about the candidates and their ideas, interpreting actions of candidates and their opponents, controlling those in power and mobilizing voters politically. There is very important relationship between knowledge about candidates, evaluation of candidates, decision about voting and candidate coverage in media. The television is still very important source of political information. 81% of respondents indicated that TV news programs are the main source of political news. The article presents the results of media content analysis of „Wiadomości” TVP1 before presidential election in 2015 in Poland. The purpose of the research was to evaluate if the campaign coverage was balanced or biased. There was visibility of candidates and media’s favorability examined in the analysis of the most watched TV news program.

Although such groups are confronted with many problems (transition from the virtual to the real action, slacktivism), these applications are an interesting phenomenon, and can enrich representative democracy. Titonostalgia w wydaniu tabloidowym. Postać Josipa Broza-Tity na łamach gazety „24 Sata”

The paper is based on the observation of the phenomenon of yugo- and titonostalgia in the Croatian mass culture, which, combined with the policy of infotainments resulted in a highly interesting way of presenting Josip Broz-Tito in the daily newspaper “24 Sata”. The picture of Marshal Tito that is emerging from published articles, is positive in general. One will not find a critical analysis of his achievements or commentaries on the controversial points of his governments, as the tabloid focuses on gossips and anegdotes from his highly interesting life. According to the profile of the newspaper, most of the articles refers to his amorous conquests, love life, luxury and great wealth. A large part of them are also his newly disclosed secrets the public had no clue about, but those also do not apply to the sphere of serious politics, but rather give another sneak-peak into marshal’s private area. This image, although rather positive, sometimes even proud, is really shallow, one-sided, commoditized, and aims to attract a common reader.

Model dziennikarstwa zorientowany na obywateli w perspektywie paradygmatu społecznej odpowiedzialności mediów. Przykład prasy w Polsce

This paper aims to present a theoretically-empirical reflection on the citizen-oriented model of journalism developed from the social responsibility of the media paradigm. The main indicator of that model is the significant attention paid by journalists to the current perspective of the citizens (in terms of their expectations, demands, actions), to educate citizens about their rights and obligations, as well as to encourage people to actively participate in public debate. The study was conducted under the framework of the international comparative project “Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe”, launched and coordinated by C. Mellado and L. Hellmueller from Texas State University, USA (www.journalisticperformance.org). The results of empirical research (an analysis of the contents of four Polish daily newspapers) revealed that Polish journalism insufficiently incorporates the model of civic service, one of whose most rudimentary aims is the support, education and representation of the citizens’ interests.

Krakowskie „Życie” jako forum prezentacji prądów ideowych i koncepcji światopoglądowych Młodej Polski (wybrane zagadnienia)

The paper presents an overview of Kraków’s “Życie” (1897–1900) as a journal that featured the most important ideological and philosophical trends of the late nineteenth century. Examination of journalistic texts on cultural, social and political issue, published in the journal especially when Ludwik Szczepanski and Artur Gorski where editors-in-chief, helped to isolate major fields covered in the periodical. These include: (1) bankruptcy of the ideals of the nineteenth century; (2) antinomy of native and universal values as well as values of other cultures; (3) relationship between tradition and modernity; (4) risks associated with the development of mass culture and the dissemination of the philistine worldview; (5) possibilities of overcoming the decadent and artistic worldview. Analysis of journalistic texts devoted to the issues listed above adds to Kraków’s “Życie” being characterised as a journal showing the complexity or even – in a sense – the dialectic nature of Polish modernism.

Issues of Truth and Correctness vs. Rhetoric in Media Discourse

Following Niklas Luhmann, the author assumes that communication creates social systems. The system therefore influences the nature of communication. The impact of rhetoric on media discourse can be understood as a result of the strategy adopted by the system. What follows from the above assumption is a discussion of the notion of truth which is fundamental to media philosophy. Systems, in their adopted strategies, affect the media and use persuasion in a way that is remote from the treatment of the truth as an idea or as a condition of an ethical nature.

The Persuasiveness of a Message and the Problem of Legitimacy

The author analyses several selected speeches of Italian politicians: the founder of the Forza Italia party, Silvio Berlusconi; the founder and leader of the Five Stars Movement, Beppe Grillo; and the current Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi. The study makes it possible to evaluate whether the conditions for the ideale Sprechsituation (the ideal speech situation) of Jürgen Habermas are fulfilled in analysing the public discourse. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the persuasiveness of the communication and the problem of legitimacy.

The Structure of Ambiguity Phenomena (Based on Cognitive Analyses of the Ways in Which Politicians Communicate)

The paper presents the ambiguity phenomena in terms of cognitive categorization and blending processes. The analyses of politicians’ programme speeches, based on Lakoff’s and Langacker’s semantics and Langacker’s grammar research, result in describing the ambiguity phenomena as sender’s or receiver’s mental concepts rather than relating it to linguistic properties of the message. Moreover, a cognitive point of view in the research on ambiguity reveals its multilevelled structure, which stems from the polysemic nature of mental categories and blends.
