However, whatever the period, a common feature of migration is that the spaces subject to human mobility remain in perpetual motion and that those who move transform the life experiences in the places they arrive while at the same time gaining a new dimension to their own experiences. As migrants and hosts interact their once-existing lives will mutually change and irreversibly transform each other.

Furthermore, a significant number of foreigners live in Turkey not only for work, pleasure, or education but also for personal reasons. Hence, the article focuses on a particular group of migrants – ‘love' migrants – men and women from several European countries, who settled in Istanbul due to their emotional ties with Turkish citizens and established families with them. The key questions of the article are: a) how foreign parents perceive family relations, a concept of a good mother and child-rearing practices in the Turkish society; and b) how on the basis of perceived differences, the foreign parents create symbolic boundaries specifically toward their Turkish in-laws, perceived typical Turkish “mothers”, and Turkish society as a whole.

The Fear of "What They Say": How Gossip Regulates Sexual Exploration among Migrants in Europe

Extant literature on gossip is vast. Since the earlier days of discussion on the topic, which divided anthropologists over functionalist and methodological individualist camps (Gluckman, 1963; Paine, 1967; Gilmore, 1978), there have been calls for clarification of the term. In this paper, we operationalize gossip as “the fear of what they say”. Our approach to gossip reflects communal dynamics among the populations we study, Turks in Amsterdam and Strasbourg, where the fear of what other people might say (“elalem ne der?”) constitutes a reality that shapes how one acts. As we take gossip as an effective controlling mechanism that works through fear, we also delve into the larger anxieties that are argued to threaten the communities in which we conduct our ethnographic fieldwork. One such anxiety emanates from the possibilities of sexual exploration that life in Amsterdam and Strasbourg brings. In both cities, the fear of young (and sometimes old and married) men and women “fooling around” puts the youth under the spotlight as potential candidates for misdemeanor. In both contexts, we witnessed a growing anxiety over second and third generation Turks’ engagement with extra and pre marital affairs. The fear of becoming gossip material, which could not only tarnish one’s reputation, but in some cases lead to more dire consequences, is a reality that our informants do not overlook. Both in Amsterdam and Strasbourg, the young Turkish women and men we talked to are well aware of moral boundaries that determine the do’s and don’ts of communal life. However, rather than reorienting their actions in line with cultural norms, our informants invent tactics (de Certeau 1984) to navigate intra-community surveillance. How they continue to live their lives amidst surveillance is a topic that we look further into in this paper.

Bu analiz yönteminde metinde geçen anahtar sözcükler türlerine göre saptanarak kullanım sıklıkları ve birbirleri ile olan ilişkileri ortaya çıkartılmaktadır. Metin madenciliği, açık uçlu anket soruları ve mülakat başta olmak üzere nitel araştırmaların esas alındığı birçok çalışmada kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Koichi Higuchi tarafından geliştirilen ve ücretsiz olarak erişim sağlanabilen Kh-Coder adlı yazılım kullanılarak, yazar tarafından gerçekleştirilen “İdeal Japonca Öğretmeni Algısı” adlı nitel araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlar tanıtılmıştır. Söz konusu araştırmada, Hiroshima Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi’nde öğrenim gören sekiz Japon öğrenciye “Gelecekte nasıl bir Japonca öğretmeni olmak istiyorsunuz?” sorusu yöneltilmiştir. Elde edilen yanıtlar metin madenciliği yöntemi ile yorumlanırken, söz konusu analiz yönteminin özellikleri değerlendirilmiştir.

Japonca Eğitiminde Modern Senryūların Ders Malzemesi Olarak Kullanımı

In Japanese society, honne (one's true feelings) and tatemae (the feelings of real emotions concealed, one's feelings accepted by society) are regarded as two important concepts. Although these two concepts exist in all societies, they are more common in Japanese society. Japanese people express their true feelings (honne) which they avoid from presenting in daily life through senryūs. Senryū is a Japanese short poem which is written 5-7-5 in total 17 morae. In these poems, various subjects related to human and society are conveyed critically or in a sense of humor (satire, humor, black humor etc.). In this study, it was aimed to inform Japanese language learners about the senryūs which is a literal enrichment in Japanese culture and to increase awareness of the learners on word games, cultural elements and linguistic usages in modern senryū. Also, this study highlighted to keep the attention of the Japanese language learners generally having reading on literary texts such as stories, novels etc. on Japanese poetry and to inform them about senryū culture.

Abbasi Bağdat’ının Kuruluşunda Göçün Rolü

Hz. Muhammed’in Medine’ye hicretten sonra orada kurduğu İslam devleti Dört halife döneminden sonra Emeviler hanedanının idaresine geçmişti. Emevilere karşı başlayan hoşnutsuzluğu yönetme başarısını gösteren Hz. Muhammed’in amcası Abbas’ın soyundan gelenler iktidarı devraldılar. Emevi iktidarına karşı olan ancak farklı beklentilere sahip çok sayıda hizbi aynı hedefe odaklamak Abbasileri bekleyen en önemli görevdi. Bu yüzden de es-Seffah’tan sonra gelen ikinci Abbasi Halifesi Ebû Cafer el-Mansûr’u bekleyen en önemli görev kendi amaçları için harekete katılan farklı çıkar gruplarının uzlaştırılmasıydı. İlk Abbasi halifelerinin kendilerini bütün gruplar nezdinde meşrulaştırmak için seçtikleri yol, imparatorluk ideolojisini İran unsurlarının kaygılarını giderecek şekilde genişletmekti. Bu yüzden bir yandan Sünni ve Şiî Müslüman kitleyi hoşnut etmek için Hz. Muhammed’in soyundan olduklarını ifade ederken öte yandan Babillilerden Sasanilere kadar Irak ve İran’daki eski imparatorlukların varisleri olduklarını ilan ettiler. Böylelikle Sasani kültürünü Abbasi potasına katabildiler. Bu politikanın mimarı da el-Mansûr’du (Gutas, 2015: 38-39). Söz konusu politikanın en iyi yansımalarından biri de yeni başkentin kurulmasıdır. Bağdat’ın yerinin seçiminden dairevi planına, hatta buraya yerleştirilen gruplara kadar yeni devletin kurucu ideolojisinin etkileri gözlenebilmektedir. Merkezinde halifenin Sarayı ile devlet dairelerinin bulunduğu dairevi planda devletin bütün gruplara eşit mesafede olduğunu göstermeyi amaçlamıştır. Mansûr, şehrin inşası için de ülkenin dört bir yanından meslek ve sanat erbabının getirilmesini sağlamıştı. Sayılarının yüz bini bulduğu rivayet edilen bu meslek ve sanat erbabı arasında Haccac b. Ertat ve Ebu Hanife Numan b. Sabit de bulunmaktaydı (Taberi, IV: 459; Bağdadi, I: 66-67; Hamevi, I: 458). Bu yüz bin işçinin önemli kısmının inşaattan sonra Bağdat’ta kalmayı seçtiği düşünüldüğünde, Abbasi başkentinin ülkenin dört bir yanından göç alarak kurulduğu anlaşılır.

The impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Indigenous People of Tamilnadu – A Medical Anthropological Perspective

The Indigenous people are culturally unique and they are into many ethno-medicinal practices. There are about 36 indigenous people (Scheduled Tribes) are living in the State of Tamilnadu, India. These people were also seasonally migrating to various places for the jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a great impact on their livelihoods and also on their health. These communities are more vulnerable and the impact of COVID-19 on these communities is under-addressed. The Indigenous communities require a prime attention and more need for awareness on the COVID-19 pandemic. The Elderly population of the Indigenous communities are having traditional knowledge systems and healing practices. The practice of herbal medicine, naturopathy and spiritual healing are preferred by them. Lack of emotional content and belief in public healthcare system continues to distance them from modern medicinal systems. The indigenous communities are generally suffering from diseases like tuberculosis, hyper tension, diabetes mellitus, cardio vascular diseases and sickle cell anemia. These conditions are weakening their immune system and increase their vulnerability towards COVID-19. The prevalence of anemia and malnutrition makes the women and children also lower the resistance towards the COVID-19. The study trying to identify the special strategies to safe guard the Indigenous communities from a medial anthropological perspective through case studies using grounded theory method.
