Many researches show that pupils prefer learning how to solve the math problems by heart even in learning mathematics. It is necessary to look for ways of teaching mathematics leading to a departure from such a trend. One of the options is the frequent assignment of substitution-related tasks. This method develops pupils’ creativity. Many tasks offer several possible substitutions. Pupils learn to create a substitute expression. The substitution method allows the task to be transformed, thus creat connections between the different areas of mathematics and offer pupils new insights into the use of already acquired knowledge.

Motivational simple experiments in science education

The motivational role of school experiments in science education is still growing. Motivation in education is realized using cognitive motivational teaching techniques. Several cognitive motivational teaching techniques are based on observation and experimentation. From the pedagogical constructivist point of view it is important to develop appropriate school experiments for school practice. Presented cognitive motivational teaching techniques are based on special kinds of simple experiments such as: experiments of everyday life, entertainment-edutainment experiments, problem experiments, experiments supported by ICT etc. All presented simple experiments are developed by a use of design-based research including action research in school practice at primary and lower secondary schools.

An obligatory curriculum document, the Framework Education Program (FEP), is constantly under criticism of the extent to which the level of knowledge, cognition and skills of students in each school is shattered at the same level of education. Although the FEP is upgraded, this situation does not improve. Upgrading leads to extensions of expected outputs and curriculum, but there is no reduction in unnecessary content. Changes in linkages between disciplines if they are, are only minimal. Through a metaresearch survey, we summarize the data that can shed light on the Framework Education Program.

Na cestě k rozvíjení autonomie žáka při výuce anglického jazyka

Autonomie žáka a její rozvíjení patří mezi důležitá témata současné didaktiky cizích jazyků. Nejedná se ovšem o téma úplně nové, neboť počátky zájmu o tuto problematiku sahají až do 60. let 20. století. Větší pozornosti se této problematice dostalo od 80. let 20 století, a to především díky odborníkům jako byl např. Benson (2001), Dam a Legenhausen (1996), Dickinson (1995), Holec (1981), Little (1995) a další. Různí autoři vymezovali autonomii v rámci didaktiky cizích jazyků s mírnými odlišnostmi a také se lišily jejich názory na to, co vše rozvíjení žákovy autonomie zahrnuje. Jak říká Legenhausen (2009), autonomie učícího se jedince nevychází z jednoho teoretického směru a na vzniku tohoto konstruktu se podílely různé filosofické, psychologické a didaktické směry (např. humanistická psychologie, přístup zaměřený na učícího se jedince, kognitivní a konstruktivistické teorie učení).

Účinok tréningu s využitím HRV techniky na zlepšovanie pozornosti detí v školskom veku – prípadové štúdie

The aim of our research was to verify the effectiveness of the training focus using the device HRV in children of school age. In our research, we focused on the qualitative assessment of the abilities of three children with attention deficit disorder. We implemented two measuring cognitive abilities of children - test and retest - before and after completing the training. Within the measurements we used a battery of tests - Raven's Progressive Matrices, Numeric Square, laterality test, Stroop test and B-JEPI. Training was aimed at encouraging the ability to maintain attention and reduce emotional and behavioral problems of children. As part of the training we focused on the inhibition of overall arousal and reactivity children, training modeled behavior and increasing the motivation of cooperation. The re-test, we recorded positive growth of cognitive skills of children, which we confirmed the effectiveness of the training in the re-education of children.

Creating Teaching Units for Student Inquiry

Tasks determine to a large extent how students develop mathematical thinking abilities and become fluent in applying mathematical methods and techniques. As Stein et al. (1996, p. 459) put it: \The mathematical tasks with which students become engaged determine not only what substance they learn but also how they come to think about, develop, use, and make sense of mathematics." They distinguish (p. 466) in mathematical tasks four increasing cognitive demands: (1) memorisation; (2) use of formulas, algorithms, or procedures without attention to concepts, understanding, or meaning; (3) use of formulas, algorithms, or procedures with connection to concepts, contexts, understanding, or meaning; and (4) \doing mathematics," including complex mathematical thinking and reasoning activities such as making and testing conjectures, framing problems, looking for patterns, and so on. Tasks at the highest level of cognitive demand are complex, possibly ill-structured, and require students to make strategic decisions, make connections between concepts and contexts, reason in a mathematical way, and explain their thinking. In other words, student are invited to work as a mathematician or as a professional using mathematics in her/his field.

Teaching Students to Think Mathematically Through Inquiry: The Norwegian Experience

The University of Agder (UiA) is a public university located in the southern part of Norway on two campuses, one in a larger city of Kristiansand where the university administration and most faculties are situated and another in a smaller town of Grimstad, about 45 kilometres distant from the main campus. UiA is one of the youngest universities in Norway, yet its history dates back to 1839 when the Teacher Training School was established at Holt rectory. Being one of the major driving forces for the regional development, UiA is also internationally oriented; it contributes to many international projects in education and research as a leading organisation (as in PLATINUM) or as a partner. The university is the home to about 13,000 students and 890 academic staff. It is organised in six faculties: Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Business and Law and has a Teacher Education Unit.

Emočné schémy a spracovávanie emócií v prístupe Roberta L. Leahyho

People differ in how they conceptualize their emotions and what strategies they employ to cope with them. The aim of our contribution is to bring closer the concept of emotional schemas within the cognitive approach of American psychologist R.L. Leahy, pupil of A.T. Beck. The introduction offers a brief selective view of the benefits of the existing well known theories and models concerning the relationships of cognition and emotion in the context of emotional processing. Furthermore, we describe Leahy´s model of emotional schemas, his understanding of emotional schemas, emotional coping strategies in the framework of emotional schemas and the process of normalization and pathologization of emotions. Finally, we illustrate the dimensions of emotional schemas and their characteristics, and how they are presented by R. L. Leahy.

Predikcia ťažkostí v emočnej regulácii na základe osobnostných a sociálnych zdrojov integrovaného fungovania: úloha všímavosti, vnímanej emočnej inteligencie, sebadeterminácie a dôležitých druhých osôb

The aim of the present research was to investigate the role of mindfulness, perceived emotional intelligence (EI), self-determination and autonomy-supportive interpersonal style of the important others in individual´s difficulties in emotion regulation. Study was conducted on sample of 655 university first-grade students aged 18-23 M=19.6, SD=1.04; 389 females, 266 males) using self-report measures Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS), Global Motivation Scale (GMS-18), Interpersonal Behaviours Scale (IBS) and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Results of correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses supported the importance of mindfulness, perceived EI, self-determination and autonomy-supportive interpersonal style of important others (especially parents) in preventing individuals´ difficulties in emotion regulation. Our findings might be relevant to personality counselling.

The effect of affective valence and anxiety on cognitive flexibility

It has been documented that stressful and anxiety-inducing conditions have detrimental effects on cognitive flexibility during problem solving. This effect is typically attributed to either enhanced sympathetic arousal or possible cognitive interference, both representing a common component of stress response and anxiety state. The present study investigates the impact of experimentally-induced emotional states (anxiety state specifically) on the ability to solve ill-defined verbal problems that require cognitive flexibility (remote associates test). As hypothesized, the group in negative-affect condition showed inferior problem solving ability when compared to the group under positive treatment. Additionally, state anxiety was moderately and inversely associated with post-test cognitive flexibility score while this association remained stable after the pre-test scores (both anxiety and cognitive flexibility) were corrected for. Subsequent mediation analysis yielded evidence that the observed impairment of cognitive flexibility is mediated by the level of post-treatment state anxiety. Therefore, anxiety state may be a crucial parameter responsible for cognitive inflexibility during problem solving.

Modulating effects of acute stress on cognitive flexibility in semantic search paradigms

Both semantic fluency and remote associates test (RAT) are believed to load on cognitive flexibility to some extent. We hypothesized that overall performance on remote associates test (in our study: concept access test – CAT) will be related to switching component of semantic fluency, which is believed to reflect cognitive flexibility, but not to clustering component that represents automatic retrieval of closely related concepts. To further investigate these relationships a between-subject experiment was conducted where we utilized a hybrid stress protocol similar to Trier Social Stress Test with physiological measures of electrodermal activity (EDA) and psychological measures of state anxiety STAI-X1. We didn’t observed significant correlation between switching and CAT. Clustering was weakly related to CAT after controlling for shared variance with EDA. We observed weak negative relationship between overall CAT performance and EDA. Switching component was significantly higher in experimental (stress) group than in controls. Clustering was more effective in control group than i n experimental. R esults s uggest t hat CAT/RAT p erformance might t o some degree depend on relatively automatic search processes with low requirements on cognitive control rather than on willful processes reflected in switching. Distinct types of search strategies in semantic fluency test and RAT paradigms are also discussed with attempts to interpret different modulating effects of acute stress on their performance.

Vplyv kognitívneho vyčerpania na sylogistické usudzovanie

The article is concerned with the effect of induced ego depletion on participants ability to solve syllogistic reasoning tasks. We used incongruent Stroop task to induce ego depletion in half of participants (n = 34). The control group (n = 33) solved similar task, that was not depleting. The results showed, that participant´s ability to solve syllogisms, that only required intuitive reasoning, was not affected by ego depletion. However, in syllogistic tasks, that required deliberate resoning, depleted participants achieved worse scores than control group, although the difference did not reach statistical significance. The results are compared to our previous findings (Šrol & Konrádová, 2015) and conclusions of other studies in the field. In the last section of the article we discuss the potential applications of ego depletion paradigm in the research of intuitive and deliberate reasoning and decision making.

MOŽNOSTI UPLATNĚNÍ MENTÁLNÍCH MAP A ASOCIAČNÍCH ANALÝZ V REGIONÁLNÍCH ANALÝZÁCH

Mental mapping was firstly used by geographers in 1960s’ and 1970s’ as an expression of a perception of a city or to study territory preferences of its citizens. In present time, it is being used in many ways in “regionalistic” tasks, however it has never became integral part of regional analysis, and so it is known as a curiosity or an anomaly in a research of a territory and its problems. With a creation of mental maps is also related processing of association analyses, which haven’t been used in regional analyses and regional development at all. The purpose of the work is to imagine options of use of a mental mapping and an association analysis in regional analyses on example of the outcomes of terrain excursions of students, who study regionalistic subjects, and demonstrate this way possibilities of use of these techniques as a new and complementary element in a research of a current state and a development potential of the territory. Based on practical knowledge, we can call mental maps of “developing” type as a hand drawn “picture” of the mapped location, which contains the most important parts of the area. In terms of a conception we can divide them into “partial” and “holistic” maps, and we can evaluate them with an analysis of a frequency. Association analyses can be concepted as associations geographical or as associations preceptual, eventually as comparative analyses, that compare states of two or more territories.

The cognitive dimension among university students in the area of sexual and reproductive health with an emphasis on the issue of delayed/late pregnancy and parenthood

Background: The shift in women’s fertility and birth rate to the higher age is characterized as the most significant feature of reproductive behaviour over the past decades in the Czech Republic (and in other developed countries). The trend of the so-called delayed or late pregnancy/motherhood/parenthood is determined by polyfactorial influences with possible risk impacts on the biomedical and psychosocial aspects of the health of mothers, fathers, children and society as such. In 2020, the following project was implemented: 50/2020/PPZ/OKD In Time – responsible, erudite, planned and prepared parenthood – The shaping and development of health literacy in the area of reproductive health among young adults (university students). The project was supported by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and the Faculty of Education, Palacký University Olomouc. The outcomes of the project are of both educational and research nature. Method(s): The Research on the cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in the area of early pregnancy/parenthood involving a sample of 844 student respondents from 14 universities in the Czech Republic evaluated the level of knowledge of health literacy with an emphasis on the general area of sexual and reproductive health as well as the specific area of possible risks associated with delayed/late pregnancy/parenthood. The research also focused on the personality and attitude dimensions of young adults in the context of delayed and late pregnancy. Results: In a specific area of sexual and reproductive health, the level of knowledge was problematic, sometimes even insufficient. An alarming fact is the complete lack of knowledge concerning the probability of conception during a single ovulation cycle of a young woman (18–30 years). Surprisingly, the correct answer was identified by less than 2% of female university students. The complete set of results of the research is published in the monograph In Time: The cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in relation to pregnancy and parenthood. Conclusions: The unfavourable level of health literacy concerning early pregnancy/parenthood may have a negative effect on the affective and behavioural dimension of young adults and support the manifestations of possible bio-psycho-social risks and complications resulting from the trends of shifting motherhood/parenthood to higher age bands. It is thus necessary to educate the young generation by means of adequate didactic procedures in order for them to be able to make informed decisions about whether and when to have a child.
