The present paper is an introduction to and analysis of the article “Literary criticism must be scientific”, presented here for the first time in English translation. The original was published by Lotman in 1967 in the journal Voprosy Literatury. The article by Lotman is a part of a wider debate, started in 1963, that saw structuralists and their opponents dispute the validity and heuristic value of structuralist methodology in literary criticism. The aim of the introduction is to explore Lotman’s engagements with his intellectual context as they emerge in his 1967 article. The first part of the paper discusses the wider context of the debate, and explores the positions of the opponents of structuralism and the ways in which Lotman relates to them. The second part of the paper analyses how Lotman and his structuralist colleagues related to the official Soviet ideology, the diamat. In both cases, it will be seen how Lotman engaged certain aspects of his opponents’ ideas, as well as the official ideology, in order to further his goal of reconciling structuralism and historicism.

The paper by V. Kozhinov “Is structural poetics possible?” (1965) is not the first that opponents of structuralism dedicate to that question. Since the beginning of the debate, the tone and character of the charges presented to those authors that implement statistical and structural methodologies in humanistic sciences underwent a significant evolution. L. Timofeev was the first to open the discussion, introducing structuralism as suddenly revived ‘formalism’, as the repetition of an outdated stage of science. Clearly, such arguments do not even deserve a reply: it was enough to remind the forgetful colleagues that the whole matter “has already been condemned”.

Full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, habilitated doctor Yuri Stepanova, whose list of scientific works includes both large-scale books and shorter articles on general linguistics, semiotics, culture and Indo-European studies, Romance studies and Baltic studies, is one of the most famous people in Moscow ( more precisely, apparently, it should be said — a representative of the Russian) linguistic school. He knows very well the traditions of the famous Russian philology of this school established in the 19th and 20th centuries, he himself has been fruitfully expanding and renewing them for several decades, not to mention the ones that are very dear to us - from the time of Filip Fortunatos until now, the unbroken tradition of devoting space to the Lithuanian language in his research . J. Stepanov's very diverse interests as a scientist formed his theoretical observation system, which, based on specific observations of the structure and functioning of language, is based on "idea filiation (receptivity)* and "idea metamorphism™. The ``new realism'' direction of language philosophy, which has gained clear contours in Russia relatively recently, is most closely related to the name of its founder, J. Stepanov.

This study attempts a semiotic analysis of David Cameron’s photograph taken during the Brexit campaign. The aim is to help viewers decode and evaluate a photograph from the media by providing a few strategies as guidance. The approach adopted for this analytical research is inspired by Kress and van Leeuwen’s Reading Images-The Grammar of Visual Design (2006). Firstly, the photograph functions in the same way as a sentence with the reader, in other words, it sends a message to the viewer. Secondly, the meaning of a photograph needs to be decoded by paying attention to the objects from the image and the connection between them. The conclusion is intended to help viewers understand that the relationship between objects is not at random but a meaningful one.

The first strategies to ensure the efficiency of communication process were based on linear, unidirectional processes, over time including feedback into strategies. The representatives of this process approach to communication attributed the decisive role in the success of the communication process to the sender of information. The results of the studies of semiotic and linguistic pragmatics have shown that the recipient of the information has an equally important role to play, as he or she not only receives the information but also interprets its content. Proponents of the semiotic approach to communication have shown that meaning is not only determined by verbal means, and that it is therefore appropriate to examine the conditions necessary for the formation of meaning: relationships (e.g., the relationship between the addresser and the addressee), and contexts (e.g., culture, motivation, values, communication skills, creativity). Moreover, it was found that not only the role of perception or cognitive abilities, but also primary sensory experience (intuition) and emotional intelligence are important in the communication process.

The communication of science, in the current era - especially after the COVID-19 pandemic -, becomes a driving force of development, hence the role of journalistic authorities in the encouragement and popularization of scientific research. The journalist is thus led to mobilize all his discursive skills in order to convey scientific statements in the common language of the general public. This contribution is interested in the way in which the journalist dresses up articles relating to the health field with a popularizing intention. It should be noted that we will focus only on paratextual elements as a means of popularizing scientific data. Our choice is justified by the fact that these processes are considered to be both scriptural elements aimed at appealing to the reader's intelligence and arousing his or her curiosity, and substantial in the language practices of the media. This might be the reason for which the journalist takes care to use meticulously eye-catching paratexts in order to solicit the intention of the readership and to make the reception of the statement attractive.

Despite all scientific efforts to elucidate the mystery surrounding medieval builders, a complete analysis of what they represented and their cultural contribution to the West has not yet been achieved. The methods of converting the ritual text into the cultural discourse were successful by building the cathedral as a form of sacralization of the social dimension. This metamorphosis from a conceptual dimension into reality can be identified through critical discourse analysis. Language is functional within a contextualised frame, manifesting itself as social semiotics.

Body language, which defines the communicative and behavioral sphere of action of individuals, is an important indicator of identity. Emotional reactions that make important body language tools such as gestures and facial expressions meaningful as a form of expression in social life also shape the subject of interaction. One of the important environments in which body language is used effectively is sports struggles. Among the sports branches, football has the highest level of participation and interaction in the world. In football, the elements Deciphering clubs include songs, choreographies, mascots and symbolized stadiums. In addition to their physical structures, football abilities and achievements, football players can increase their brand values through their body language. The highest emotional moments of football are shaped by goals. There is a meaningful interaction between the joy experienced by the fans at the time of the goal and the Decency of the players. The goal joys of football players can sometimes get in the way of goals. The fact that football players have different emotional and cultural structures can also reveal different joy rituals. Joy rituals that provide motivation and relaxation on the audience can make important contributions to the brand and patent values of football players, as well as other areas such as advertising and sponsorship. Rituals are turning from a micro sociological field into interactive narratives at the level of personal brand management and side meaning. In this study, iconic photographs reflecting the joy rituals of football players are examined through semiotic analysis.

This study shows that the four major trends that shape the field of modern stylistics have the particularity of being mutations that differ from each other. This singularity does not prevent the detection of theoretical and practical affinities and distancings. From the theoretical point of view, despite some points of encounter in terms of stylistic training, the object of study, the tools of analysis and the approach of analysis, it appears that these different stylistic tendencies often differ from one another. Following this confrontation, stylistics remains, despite a few divergences, a united body, and the different tendencies that animate it are part of a scientific game of a dynamic and evolutionary stylistics.

This study is a theoretical and practical assessment of corporeality and its characteristics. The article presents corporeality and somatic vocabulary through the prism of phenomenology as well as their linguistic and stylistic representation in the text. Corporeality is a phenomenological category based on the notion of the “corps sensible.” Its four characteristics are: constancy, reversibility, affectivity and kinesthesis. The study analyses peculiarities of these four characteristics and pays close attention to the phenomenon of kinesthesis. We considered this philosophical concept in the novel Dans le labyrinthe by Alain Robbe-Grillet, representative of the New Novel, who was notably influenced by phenomenology. The analysis of this novel has shown a body of somatic lexicon as one of the linguistic means of representing corporeality. The study has also analyzed the textual realization of the four characteristics of corporeality.

Our contribution offers a semiotic analysis of the advertisements in which Roger Federer, a sports legend, appears. The material also includes a swot analysis and one of the consumer market that the Swiss player has a beneficial influence on. The personal brand is always a current problem, and the name Federer is enough to provide a complete and astonishing flowering even after the end of the actual career.

The paper focuses on the semiotic salience of the main hieratic markers of Judaism in the form of the Menorah and Magen David. They are necessarily cast against other Judaic symbolism, as for example the semiotic presence of Hamsa, which is not however a hieratic marker. The analysis is based on two (illusory) contrastive forces that have also been widely used to analyze linguistic phenomena: the centrifugal and centripetal. Framing them as implicational preferences operating on the investigated areas of the semiosphere, I accordingly propose several functional and structural categorizations of the investigated signs. The analytic corpus for a bottom-up study was collected in various European countries and Morocco in the years 2010‒2022 and consists of hundreds of tokens of digital documentation of encountered Judaica and concatenations of Judaism symbols in pragmatic contexts. The discussion is also indexed by a cultural dyad of the sacred/profane. The analysis brings to light some synchronic processes which that type of signage undergoes, e.g. the process of fortition of the Magen David (centrifugal direction - diffusive, dividing, with a concomitant lenition of the menorah (centripetal position – confusive, binding) and postulates the Shield of David as a floating semiotactic prime.

Taking its cue from Juri Lotman’s essay “Pravo na biografiyu”, this paper re-formulates the categories proposed by Lotman in relation to the two models of the saint and the modern intellectual, the former exemplifying the perfect realization of the norm and the latter the rejection of the norm in the name of an individual rule. These two models are considered with reference to two case studies from contemporary culture, respectively provided by the Catholic saints and by intellectuals – especially semioticians. The argument in the former case, which also takes into consideration other fundamental essays by Lotman, shows that contemporary Catholic culture challenges the identification of sanctity with the ideal of perfect adhesion to the norm. This notion is apparently applicable only to hagiographies seen as part of a mechanism of stabilization by which the dominating religious culture tames the explosive potential of the saintly figure. In the latter case, reflection on the theoretical and autobiographical production of several authors related to the field of semiotics shows that a third model can be added to the two identified by Lotman. This third model consists in acquiring the right to biography and carrying out autobiography not in contrast with the norm, as the modern writers studied by Lotman did, nor by dissolving oneself into the norm, but rather by dissolving oneself into the Other, that is, by opening one’s mind so as to allow the Other to become an integral part of oneself. This model is exemplified by the work by Julia Kristeva, in particular Teresa, My Love (2008), in that it overcomes the distinction between biography and autobiography and describes an intellectual and a saint who become “roommates”.

This study presents an analysis of the pattern of communication between developers of socially engaged browser games with political themes and their players. This pattern involves a multilevel disruption of the message carried by the game medium and its construct. The solution is being used by the creators to show and comment on the causes and manifestations of negative processes related to politicians and politics and also having a negative impact on social, economic and cultural issues in their countries. In the course of the analysis, its author considers 141 browser games, originating from 23 countries around the world. Their creators made them between 2000 and 2022, and placed them in publicly accessible portals, offering access to online games via a web browser.

In this preliminary note, the editor justifies the publication of this special issue of “Acta Universitatis Danubius. Communicatio” devoted to Eugenio Coseriu’s commemoration, 20 years after his death. At the same time, he presents the content of the texts written or translated on this very occasion, texts which deal with matters concerning semiotics, text linguistics and hermeneutics from a Coserian perspective. Moreover, mention must be made that two of the selected texts belong to Coseriu himself and are published here for the first time in a Romanian version.
