The life story of another remarkable woman, St. Macrina (327–380), has been preserved for us by her brother, St. Gregory of Nyssa (approx. 335 – after 394). She spent all her life in a very prosy environment, in the house of her parents. Her story, however, is far from boring. For not only did she attain the highest level of human perfection, but she was also able – by her love for God and her neighbours – to change this ordinary place into extraordinary. Her spiritual development and the changing human relationships are the main themes of this charming literary work.

In a letter written between the solar eclipses of November 1331 and the one of May 1333 Nikephoros Gregoras (ca. 1292/1295–1358/1361) described his involvement in an on-going ‘debate’ on astronomical matters and more precisely, on the accuracy of the calculation of the solar eclipses’ date. Gregoras described the relations between him and his adversaries in the following way: Therefore, having made those people aware that there will be another eclipse of the sun, after that one, whose date and hour, and measure it is necessary to determine, then, I continued being dedicated to silence for a whole one year, up to the present day. By announcing such news, I seemed to those similar, as it were, to someone who had thrown a precious stone into the deep sea. Thus I imposed on them, diving into the sea, to search for the place in the abyss, at the bottom of the sea, where the thrown stone lies. But such a task is not at all similar; on the contrary it is to such extend easier as it is for a small child to take up in its hands a bundle of stalks.

The idea of the university arose in a situation of crisis and was the answer to that crisis. It was the a crisis especially of the institution of learning which had to face an enormous increase of new informations and mere facts, a paradigm shift in understanding the sciences, a confrontation with conflicting models of scientific explanations and beliefs and their impact on society, and finally a meeting of cultures in a more globalized world around the Mediterranean Sea, crossing even the boarders of that Mediterranean world. I am speaking of the 12th and 13th century and I have chosen the perspective of the Latin West, where in fact in Bologna and Paris the idea of the university arose. In 1200 the founding charter of the university of Paris was issued.

I would like to show with the help of the hermeneutic tool, which I examine – the philosophical concept boundary – the Byzantine thinkers' solution in the face of Maximus the Confessor of the well-known problem with the symbolical interpretation of the sacraments and the Church in The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy by Pseudo-Dionysius the Aeropagite. By Maximus is to be found one very specific for the Byzantine thinking dynamic asymmetry of the participation and of the indwelling of the energies, based on the unmeasurable difference between the intensity ant the purity of Gods essential energies and the energies of every created nature. Therefore we may say, that the perichoresis acts as a negative boundary, insofar it actually leads to the indefinable dynamic limit of essential energetic interacting between the finite and the infinite nature, without forming any conceptional understanding of the Communion. This prevents the interpretation of the sacraments purely symbolic. The dynamic of the anagogical symbolism of Dionysius is as mach strong as by Maximus, but it always presupposes the distinctive thinking, which has to separate the material part of the symbol and the several sense levels of the invisible part of the boundary symbolic integrity.

The veritable challenge of Husserl’s phenomenology has always been the understanding of the relation between transcendence and the constituting ego. Indeed, since transcendence is the correlate of the transcendental subject, every phenomenological question has to start with a clarification of the mundane being. Yet, phenomenology is non-vocational and non-presumptive, pointing not to claims about real being/non-being or actuality/non-actuality, but to questions regarding the constitution of this being. The transition from manners of being to manners of givenness determines the question of worldconstitution and unveils complex difficulties, which translate the effort of a long epistemological tradition. Namely, how is it possible to constitute transcendence as such without falling pray to either a reductive idealism, a dogmatic realism, or to a metaphysical scepticism? The “riddle of transcendence” is therefore a deep problematic that requires a careful investigation of the manner in which the world exposes itself as phenomenal transcendence.

The paper adresses Foucaults definition of the term biopolitics, which is the key to understanding Foucaults political philosophy, but is, at the same time, a category it is also the category which opens a new perspective in understanding many of the questions raised in political philosophy today. Further on, the paper explores relations between the concept of biopolitics with the terms of dispositive/discourse, power, biopower and liberalism. Key point of this paper is that the very concept of biopolitics instituted the possibility of abstract and apodictic power as forms of state governance. Mutual influences of these terms reproduce at least three relevant determinations: a) correlation of the concept of discourse with the terms of power, biopower, biopolitics, b) correlation of the term biopolitics to the tie power/knowledge and their relevance for the concept of life, c) correlation of tie power/knowledge- biopower, biopolitics to the concept of governmentality, i.e. the state and sovereignty.

In the 1930s, Italy saw a stronger influence of works by foreign authors which contributed to a crisis of conscience among Italian artists. This is how the first phase of Italian cultural and literary revival started. In the period preceding World War II, writers needed to be particularly cautious, which is why they chose the novella as the ideal form of expression that would create a bond between the author and the reader. The novel, however, appeared in its full splendor only after World War II and was characterized by a search for the validity of facts, an unforced search conducted in a moderate and accurate manner. The truth became an absolute inner imperative present in every word. It had to be presented with an utmost faithfulness, keeping its shape and authenticity, which is why the authors chose the adequate language and techniques, using everyday language and spontaneous dialog. These works of art promised not to distance themselves from everyday life, to show relentless calamities of an ordinary man, ceaselessly looking for the truth that would make the very same man act and give meaning to his own life. These aspirations gave rise to the phenomenon of Neo-Realism, whose precepts, norms and principles developed spontaneously and were not products of any particular school.

One cannot have beliefs unless one can understand their propositional content. This idea, combined with the claim that in order to understand a proposition one must know what its truth conditions are, entails that a creature has beliefs only if it understands that they can be true or false. And since such an understanding requires the possession of the concepts of belief and objective truth, only creatures that have these concepts can have beliefs and understand each other at all. But, triangulation is required to create the space for error and to allow for the acquisition of the concept of objective truth. The possibility of error is only indication of the existence of such objectivity. We all possess the concept of objectivity only if we are aware of the possibility of error.
