- Summary/Abstract:In the article the author presents basic objectives and assumptions of the Critical Disability Theory. This approach has been totally absent in Polish sociology up till the present moment. Appealing to a critical perspective the author presents a disability concept adopted in interdisciplinary disability studies. The article deals with the questions that are fundamental from the perspective of CDT: psychosocial disability model, multidimensionality and diversity of the phenomenon of disability, human-rights based approach, the influence of language on shaping the image of persons with disabilities and the necessity to develop policies leading to a social change. According to the author such an approach to disability creates new possibilities for explaining the disability phenomenon and for solving social problems associated with this phenomenon.

- Summary/Abstract:Sport of the disabled has been developing dynamically for more than fifty years, and activity of people, who practice it has become more professional. Although interest in sport of the disabled is increasing around the world, this is still a rather unknown and non-appreciated activity in Poland. Therefore, the article aims at drawing attention to physical activity and sport practicing by the disabled, as one of the social life spheres of this category of our country’s citizens, where phenomena of social exclusion and marginalization are still observed. There are qualitative data used in the research, collected through a technique of an in-depth free interview and observations, conducted among the disabled who play sports. Analysis and interpretation of the research material was performed in accordance with procedures of the grounded theory.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper focuses on the nature of imperfection of the structure of the course of life of a disabled individual, determined not only by the phenomenon of deficits and limitations caused by the consequences of diseases and random incidents. It has been indicated that the content of the course of every human’s life consists of both the general state of the condition of the psychophysical development of a human being, his or her being prepared properly for performing social roles as well as the universally expected level of competence, a skill of knowing how to behave in difficult situations, a sense of stabilization during puberty and while acquiring important skills and important social and professional competences. What should be regarded as an especially essential element in building a perspective structure of the course of life is an individual contribution from the early school period and adolescence because every person included in a specific circle (e.g. the family, teachers, friends) has an opportunity to enable its own chance at the stage of developing an available strategy of functioning and, by the agency of it, in interpreting personal individual ideas, solu¬tions, observations, feelings, hopes, desires, becoming identified with the surrounding world, overcoming adversities consistently and patiently. Disabled individuals’ activity and consequently a determined collection of individual achievements and accomplishments should be treated as superiorly extraordinary in relation to the everyday reality because in every instance it is an unusually important and measurable factor in learning about the world, communicating with it, self-development and passing on their own achievements (products).

- Summary/Abstract:Although young disabled people are in a special situation in the labour market due to their young age and disability, rarely were they target group of projects and other activation measures. The aim of the article is to show the increased interest in the problems of young people in the labour market and extending the scope of labour market activation policies available for young disabled people. The article describes activation measures for young disabled people before 2014 and the increase of interest in supporting this group following the introduction of the “Youth Guarantee” programme and raising the upper age limit for defining youth. Moreover, the paper examines ways to implement the “Youth Guarantee” in Poland, i.e. projects co-financed under the Operational Programme “Knowledge Education Development” and the support offered by the Voluntary Labour Corps. The article also discusses the determinants of the effectiveness of projects activating young disabled people. The discussion is based on the results of qualitative research conducted by the author on the situation of young disabled people in the labour market.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is based on research results from 2011 and 2015 conducted in Stalowa Wola jointly with the Students’ of Sociology Scientific Circle “Societas” on three aspects of perception of phenomenon of disability: architectural barriers in the lives of people with mobility disabilities, actions undertaken by those people to eliminate them, and also perception of disabled people by students. The research results showed that architectural barriers still are the major obstacle to the functioning of people with disabilities. Those people undertake little activity in taking of various actions due to improve of their living situation. While the research results from 2015 show that students have little knowledge about the functioning of people with disabilities and do not have much of experience in relationships with those people. In addition, the statistical data of the District Center for Family Support in Stalowa Wola show that in the town in recent years the positive changes in public buildings have been observed in terms of facilities for people with disabilities. However, not everywhere they were introduced.

- Summary/Abstract:The physically disabled students are a growing academic community, though in view of the social needs, and professional requirements of the contemporary world they are not very numerous in relation to all students. A mobility dysfunction also creates additional barriers to the educational process that provides opportunities for a further and effective development in the social and occupational life. Students with mobility disabilities have the need not only to accomplish the didactic process, they also increasingly emphasize the need to participate socially in the academic world, to integrate with the regular course of social life that shows no signs of stigmatization and exclusion from the efficient members of society. This paper presents the results of a pilot study on students with mobility disabilities at the University of Lodz, which aimed at exploring the needs and expectations on social participation, with regard to the possibilities of their implementation.

- Summary/Abstract:Modern societies change under the influence of new technologies. This affects the situation of people with disabilities. For this environment, modern media and IT solutions can be a chance to be fully mainstreamed in social life. This requires the use of potential in these technologies by people with disabilities. Their absence from the Internet is due to the lack of access to new technologies or the ability to use them, causing the area to become another area of social exclusion of this social category. - Summary/Abstract:The expansion of reflection on the position of people with disabilities outside of Western culture is of particular importance today. As a result of processes taking place in today’s world, our society is changing ethnically and begins to diversify in terms of culture and religion (migration processes, refugees, etc.). In this sense, it is important to recreate ways of defining disabilities shaped under separate civilizational and cultural conditions so that people with disabilities can receive effective help. - Summary/Abstract:The article is the first attempt in Poland to fully discuss the problem of disabled gamers. This is an important issue, linked to the increasing role of digitized play in the free time of today’s people living in digital society. According to the ICF classification, games can stimulate people with disabilities to become more social active. Nowadays, many forms of traditional play have been digitalized. Modern video games allow forming social relationships and participating in the local communities. It turns out that wide access to video games can affect the quality of life of people with disabilities. Studies show that such people are eager to use electronic games, but unfortunately, the problem is that the medium is not adapted to the needs of the disabled. That is why a lot of space has been devoted to discuss the issue of video games’ accessibility. Also, a general characteristic of the gaming culture of people with disabilities was presented as well as the development of movements for disabled gamers. The purpose of the article is to initiate a scientific discussion on the situation of disabled players in Poland, which fits in the processes of emancipation and improvement of the quality of life of disabled Poles as well as the rapid growth of the domestic video game industry. The processes of social and technological development opens the possibilities to expand the scope of disabled people activities and paying attention to it increases the probability of taking advantage of this opportunity.
