The main aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of 'glass ceiling' or under-representation of women in the management of scientific and higher-education institutions such as University of Rijeka, including the analysis of possible causes and mechanisms of discrimination which it is grounded on. In the first part, we briefly register the empirical findings about gender participation in higher positions within the hierarchical structure at the University of Rijeka, which undoubtedly indicate the presence of hidden primary and secondary discrimination. In the second part, we explore possible causes of the 'glass ceiling' effect. In the third part, we consider women’s under-representation in higher positions within the context of the debate about sexual social roles and alleged differences in the male and female nature. Finally, we stress that the phenomenon of 'glass ceiling' or under-representation of women is not only a normative justice issue (ethical and legal) but also a matter of ensuring social and scientific growth.

The essay represents an effort in reading the movie The Matrix (1999, directed by brothers Wachovsky) from the perspective of Cultural studies; more precisely, the perspective is from the theories of the body, a focus of gender studies in the last decade of the 20th century. The analysis looks at how the movie, on the one hand, makes the impression of political correctness in thematizing gender and racial identities and relations and, on the other hand, maintains its basic albeit invisible mysogynic layer. The authors tried not to follow the gender and racial stereotypes characteristic for the major part of the contemporary Hollywood production, but were not consistent in their effort, since, among many »gestures of good will« toward women and Afro-American, a number of remnants of opposed points of view is woven into the movie. However, the level of characterisation is not the layer within which these mysoginic assaults are to be looked for, because they are built into the very fable of the movie, which speaks about the ultimate paranoya of male science-fiction: the paranoya of monstruous female.

Feminism has substantially changed the position of women if we compare it to the status they had in the society before the emergence of the feminist ideology. Feminism has tried to keep the character of emancipation in the three phases it had. In the very first phase women succeeded in entering the public space and fighting for equality with men. But the fact that they got legal equality did not mean that they formally had equality in the real world. It was very difficult to change old social norms and socially constructed gender roles of women. Therefore the second feminist phase has started. Under the influence of deconstruction and postmodernism feminism in the third phase became intertwined with the gender ideology. That brought it further from its primary aim – fight against dominance and for equal access to the public space. Emphasized sexualizing of women in the media shows that the society has not evolved a lot. It is still underestimating and belittling them. The aggressive aspect of such contents states that feminism is a process of constant fight and not a concrete victory.

The author poses the problem of female perspective in science in the framework of the critique of ethnology as a form of intellectual colonization of »primitive peoples« and marginal social groups (youth, minorities, women). Major points of the critique are: 1. There is a distinction between sex as a biological category, and gender as social/cultural category which constitutes women as secondary human beings. 2. Western theoreticians transferred the male bias of their own societies and science to the cultures they studied, leaving women out of their descriptions, or seeing them as subordinated to men the way they are in the West. 3. Male bias in ethnology is also based on the fact that male anthropologists have better access to men’s cognitive models of the culture studied than to women’s. In most societies men dominate the public sphere, and so do their models of reality. Thus, when women enter »the male sphere« and compete with men, many do that on men’s terms by internalizing their models and attitudes. 4. The struggle for female perspective in science occurs as an aspect of struggle for social emancipation of women. An increasing number of ethnological studies form the foundation for anthropology of women, particularly those in the area of ritual and symbolism. Such works do not »complete« the picture of various cultures: they offer a radically different view. »Demasculinization« is decolonization of science.
