Assuming all teaching activity as a performative act with ethical implications, this article focuses on how traditional points of view about language still appear in handbooks, despite new anthropological as well as semiological theories. Regarding teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, the paper analyses several contemporaries textbooks, in order to conclude that most of them not only show structuralist views, but also a strong link between culture and language, with a biased Hispanocentrism (at least in books printed in Spain). Several of these out-of-date teaching discourses, however, still find their place in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, though some of its key points are communicative competence and the active protagonism of students.

El desarrollo del lenguaje como input lingüístico en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de lenguas en aulas multigrado

The aim is to promote the development of the students’ language abilities in multigrade schools, using the constructivist perspective of the modularity or mold-ability of the mind. This is used in order to promote the development of the languages studied. The methodology practice corresponds to the descriptive research. The study group corresponds to 24 multigrade primary students from the school “Manzanar” in Lumaco-Chile. Interviews with teachers, questionnaires in three languages, and classroom observation were used. The results of this first stage allowed the identification of language proficiency of the students in the three languages studied, and the teaching style of the teachers. Mapudungun had low scores on the comprehension test, while Spanish and English had acceptable levels. Although the communicative approach to the language was similar in the three teachers’ practices, it was observed that there were significant differences in the methodology implemented in the three languages.

The purpose of this article is to present different activities which will aid Polish students who learn Spanish as well as for their teachers who will obtain an efficient tool to test the language abilities of their students. Furthermore, the activities will demonstrate cultural differences based on the student’s ethnographic attitude. All these activities which we offer are focused on the intercultural competence which should be an integral part of the educational process. In addition, the authors of the proposals give consideration to the notion of culture according to Geert Hofstede and his model of dimensions, which they analyse and describe comparing Spanish and Polish languages.

The experts have been interested in the process of the second language acquisition for many years. However, the significant changes appeared in the second decade of the twentieth century. The establishment of the Council of Europe, an ogranization which associates 47 countries, provided new common standards of the evaluation of the language proficiency. The most important aim of the work of the Council of Europe was to promote the multilingualism and multiculturalism to create between the European citizens understanding and openness for other cultures. What is more, common norms facilitated people the mobility because the certificates they were receiving started beeing recognisable in ither countries. The creation of the CEFR and European Language Portfolio was the beginning of the new way of understanding the process of the second language acquisition which, nowadays, has to be transparent for students. Furthermore, students have become more conscious and responsible for their own learning. The possibility of monitoring their learning process gives them opportunity to work out their stategies and patterns of work. Therefore, they are not just an audience but they take an active part in the second languages acquisition.

Corpora and teaching academic writing: Exploring the pedagogical potential of MICUSP

This paper introduces a new corpus resource for teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and for carrying out research into advanced student writing across a range of academic disciplines: MICUSP, the Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers. It exemplifies how MICUSP can be used as a source of materials in the context of data-driven learning in the EAP classroom. The paper also presents selected results from two MICUSP based studies: an analysis of attended and unattended this and a study of the distribution of common phraseological items across student papers. It is argued that these results are of pedagogical relevance and can contribute to an improvement in EAP teaching.

The lexical patterning of light verbs in GRICLE and native corpora: A comparative corpus-based study

This corpus-based study compares the lexical patterns of three English light verbs, make, give and take, in native and non- native student writing. Since these verbs are highly polysemous and form a large number of collocations, they pose problems for foreign language learners. The frequency and variety of collocations with light verbs are examined in the Greek Corpus of Learner English (GRICLE), and in the native corpora LOCNESS and PELCRA. Collocations with take and give feature more frequently in GRICLE than in the native corpora. Give was found to enter into more combinations in the Greek corpus, whereas both make and take are used in a larger variety of collocations in the native corpora. The contribution of these findings to language teaching is discussed.

The article is a review of the teaching of Macedonian as a second language – non-mother tongue or foreign language in the Republic of Macedonia and abroad. It states some facts about the teaching of Macedonian language in the primary and secondary schools, to students whose mother tongue is Albanian, Turkish or Serbian, and are based on the current curriculums and teaching plans, the contents of the appropriate books and my own position on their current and possible realization plans. In the Macedonian linguistic terminology the phrase second language refers to, almost always, the language that is not students’ native or to the one that is widely spoken in the social environment. The actual conditions of the teaching of Macedonian language as a foreign are only briefly mentioned.

My Memories: An Interview about the Early Days of Videoconferencing

In the early days before smart phones, social media, and iPads, TESL teachers at AU were divided into two camps in their ideas of IT in language classes – those who were comfortable with modern technology and those who were concerned cables, cameras and screens would negatively transform the learning/teaching environment. I sat somewhere in‑between but when, shortly after a Diverse Conference (Developing Innovative Visual Educational Resources for Students Everywhere), an enthusiastic teacher at MU asked me if I was interested in bringing our classes together via videoconference, enthusiasm surpassed concern and I became part of the techie group. Both of us agreed lectures and presentations were not something we wanted in our ‘undivided’ (or divided by distance only) classroom. We intended to create a unique environment where students could interact with each other and not use this unique VC environment for Q & As after a presentation or lecture.

This review describes and critically analyses studies concerned with second language acquisition published between the years 2007 and 2017 which focus on developing the language skill of speaking by means of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The broad topic of CALL is further narrowed down by concepts of task-based learning (TBL), simulations, role-playing, features of games and social interaction and their interplay. This review offers not only thorough description but also critical analysis of the research available in this field. Apart from original studies, reviews and meta- analyses are also examined. Furthermore, chosen research papers are categorized and grouped together based on the nature of CALL they implement. The final chapters of this review summarize key findings in individual research articles and points out opportunities for further inquiry in the domain.

ITEM TEST SPECIFICATIONS: HOW TO CREATE RECIPES FOR LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS AND TESTS

Creating tests and assessments for both English language and second language learners has been challenging and has required a lot of theoretical and abstract thought. Conversely, big language testing companies, have shown weaknesses in their production of standardized assessments, especially in the training of test-item-writing. In order to create good language assessments, specifications are needed. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present the fundamental and basic principles to create a recipe or test specifications to create any type of language assessment. The author uses Lynch and Davidson’s five-step model (2002), following the formula derived by James Popham (1978). Further, after having presented the theoretical components of the model, the author proposes practical strategies to the use of this model and provide a sample language item test specification. The idea of this paper is to have teachers visualize and internalize the model to put it into practice in their own testing and assessment contexts.
