Drama, Music and Media in heritage Language Learning

This paper discusses the role that drama, music and media can play in heritage language learning. The authors will present findings from a pro-ject that took place in a community Greek school in London and explore how creative approaches can enhance students’ heritage language learn-ing, by bringing together different disciplines as well as different envi-ronments such as school, home and community. The project was part of Critical Connections: Multilingual Digital Storytelling Project, a collabora-tion between Goldsmiths, University of London and different community and mainstream schools in four countries.

Morfološko označavanje živosti: različito označavanje objekta u usvajanju hrvatskoga jezika

Language acquisition is a topic that has preoccupied researchers for years. Acquisition of morphology is very demanding for children, so they may use different strategies for simplifying complex segments of language morphology. The most frequent strategy is overregularization. The main goal of this research was to explain the acquisition of differential object marking (DOM) in Croatian. DOM in Croatian refers to the different marking of the accusative case regarding the animacy status of the object. Acquisition of DOM has been observed through three idioms: child language, child directed speech and adult to adult speech. It was expected that overregularizations will be formed by adding the morpheme –a in accusative case of inanimate masculine nouns. The study is based on the data from the Croatian corpus of child language (Kova~evi}, 2002) and the Croatian corpus of spoken language (Kuva~ Kraljevi}, Hr`ica, in preparation). Overregularizations were found in all three idioms. In child language, overregularizations are evidence of language acquisition strategies. In child directed speech, they might represent one of the strategies that adults use to aid the child in acquiring language. Overregularizations found in adult speech are sparse and restricted to the Kajkavian dialect.

The effect of transparency on a three-cycle model of manipulative discourse

It is assumed that manipulative discourse can carry various types of messages on the continuum of sincerity, such as: truth, persuasion (argumentation), deception and manipulation. These different intended meanings can cause variations within the ‘transparency factor’. The transparency factor is controlled by specific social and pragmatic factors. Generally speaking, manipulative discourse is far away from transparency because it entails the use of implicit strategies and processes to achieve a final goal. The highly transparent type of discourse is the testimony where the speaker’s intention is to present truth that is supported by explicit strategies and processes. Within this continuum, there is the persuasion where the speaker’s intention is to convince the addressee without exerting any power upon the receiver. Other types, such as coercion and deception, may show a lower degree of transparency because they are used to mislead the hearer with or without the use of the social effect such as ‘power’. Accordingly, a theoretical framework which treats manipulation as a three-cycle of the meaning-making process is proposed. It is assumed that this model helps in classifying manipulative texts into different types based on the transparency factors. The aim of this study is to provide a theoretical framework that can be adopted by researchers to analyze types of discourse in terms of transparency taking into consideration the speaker, the text itself and the hearer. All these factors in the three-cycle model help in shaping the degree of transparency that a text may show.

The aim of the paper is to introduce the basic information related to teaching Slovak languagein the Republic of Serbia, specifically in primary education. Slovak language is being taught as a minority language in Serbian Vojvodina. Slovak schools and teaching Slovak language have had a long tradition and ever intense presence in Vojvodina. The first part of the paper briefly describes the basic facts concerning the life of Slovaks and Slovak school system in Serbia. The second part of the paper focuses on teaching Slovak language in primary education and on the preliminary comparison.

Запоминание синтаксических структур при изучении французского языка как иностранного

Introduction. The principle objective of this study is to indicate the role of constructing a procedural model which would give a specific form to a more complex syntactic structure while facilitating its memorization at an advanced level of language studies, even at a university. Materials and Methods. The study is based on modeling the educational process at the university level. Results. The study reveals some difficulties in using certain French syntactic structures for Albanian learners. The authors provide the characteristics of an advanced language learner. Learning is considered as having two stages: the first stage consists of general procedures producing syntactic structures in order to construct a model or strategy of memorization (initial procedural rule); the second stage teaches this model through repetitive exercises. The analysis of such difficulties in grammar and the proposal of a strategy facilitating learning of FLE will allow Albanian learners to express themselves in French and become well-qualified teachers.Our goal is to offer students some tools they need to find out rules by themselves, acquire the ability to make forms or syntax turns to apply them and put them into practice. Conclusions. The authors intend to help students understand solid foundations of linguistic analysis, to familiarize them with syntactic structures of the most difficult expressions in the French grammar applying its fundamental rules and translating them in a precise and pleasant way to hear.

Lingvistický výskum vývinu reči slovensky hovoriacich detí

The article reacts on several anniversaries connected with the child language research in Slovakia. It has been 20 years from the publishing of the first book on child directed speech in Slovakia and 30 years since the first attempts into this research have been made. Moreover, Desať štúdií o detskej reči (2018) was published ten years after the publishing of the monograph Štúdie o detskej reči (Studies on child language, 2008), which put the basis of Slovak developmental psycholinguistics. The article can be taken as a commented bibliography of the works on language acquisition by Slovak-speaking toddlers and pre-schoolers. It points out the main milestones in the basic research and its application, mainly in the field of speech and language pathology.

THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE DRILLS IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL)

Decades ago, foreign language learning was a habit-forming procedure which was developed through extensive repetition drills; learners were exposed to imitation and memorization of linguistic utterances in the target language. Learners practiced these patterns until they became automatic. Criticism of this style of instruction resulted in language drills being substituted by more interactive, creative cognitive activities which learners could utilize in meaningful communication. However, words, phrases and sentences still needed to be mastered before interactive communication in creative activities could take place; this is where the role of communicative language drills becomes crucial.

L'Expression du temps relatif en kirundi (bantou, JD62)

In Kirundi, as in other languages of the world, the relative tense is expressed through a subordinate clause and concerns simultaneity, anteriority and posteriority. The purpose of this article is to show that in Kirundi, these possibilities of expressing of the relative tense depend on several factors, such as grammatical mode, time, aspect and lexical meaning of the verb of the main sentence, as well as the type of subordination conjunction. The description of the relative tense in Kirundi was made on the basis of subordinate clauses (temporal circumstantial or non-circumstantial) in conjunctive, relative, subjunctive, and subsequent mode. Taking into account the main verb, the application of the different factors in different sentence constructions shows that the modes considered in the subordinate clause do not all allow the same possibilities of expressing of the relative time.

Utilizarea stimulării orofaciale în cazul diplegiei spastice– studiu de caz

The aim of this paper is to present an intervention program for a child with Spastic Diplegia as a form of CerebralPalsy. This diagnosis is associated with prematurity and low birth weight. Most of the children affected by thisdisease have periventricular leukoma, which means an impairment of the white matter of the brain. Frequently thesechildren have visual and / or hearing impairment, swallowing and chewing disorders as well as communication andlanguage disorders and 2/3 of them have intellectual delay. Expressive language in children with spastic diplegia,as in other cases of cerebral palsy, is affected by problems of breathing, resonance and the limitation of the possibilityof articulation associated with poor motor control and muscle weakness. The case study present an interventionprogram based on orofacial stimulation (the Morales technique), considering their neuromotor impairment, togetherwith the classic speech therapy intervention, the purpose being the development of phonoarticulation and the verbalcommunication. There were positive results after one year of intervention. The program has to continue with higherfrequency for developing speech and communication

Steady as she goes? A bibliometric analysis of L2 vocabulary research in 1987

This paper uses a co-citation analysis to examine the research on L2 vocabulary acquisition that was published in 1987. This year is surprisingly volatile compared with the previous year, 1986, with a very large number of new sources appearing in the maps, and many sources identified in previous years losing their influence in the research papers that make up the 1987 data set. The paper also reports a larger analysis of all the work that appeared in a five year window from 1983–1987. This larger data set is not quite as volatile as the smaller 1987 data set, but it suggests that some sources who dominated the co-citation maps in earlier years are losing their influence.

Gramatika príbehu v rozprávaní detí predškolského veku

The study describes the analysis of grammar stories based on Slovak adaptation of the LITMUS MAIN instrument. The sample consists of 103 pre-school aged Slovak speaking children from 3 to 6-years old. The data statistically proved to raise of macrostructure elements production along with the age of children. The attempt and the outcome were the most often expressed by children in the story. In opposite, the setting appeared only in the oldest group of 5-years-old children.

The paper draws on the theory of linguistic picture of the world, and concentrates especially on its key concept – language stereotype. This established concept is based on the assumption that studying language stereotypes is a way that leads towards discovering the conceptualisation processes of children. These processes are changing in relation to the cognitive development of a child; they reflect his or her current experiences and the emotional aspects in particular. Discovering children’s language stereotypes provides evidence of the sharing of connotations within a children’s group, and it is very valuable for understanding the world of children. This paper aims to draw attention to the significance of this knowledge for teachers of the mother tongue.

The subject of this paper is the legislative-legal substyle of the administrative functional style in the Macedonian language, in parallel with the parallels in the Albanian language, through which we give a kind of presentation of the lexical elements that are widely frequented in the administrative functional style, thus capturing the similarities and the differences of this style in both languages. Administrative style covers the use of language within the activities of state institutions (within the state and in relations with other states). Legislative-legal sub-style is one of the sub-styles of administrative functional style, which is realized through laws, statutes, orders, etc. With the comparative approach and the use of the deductive research method, we will try to give our own review of the lexicon of the administrative functional style in the use in the public institutions in Macedonia. The aim is to give an institutional lexical overview of the functional style that is the subject of work in this paper, precisely because of the relevance of such language issues and policies nowadays, and related to the bilingualism of documents in inter-institutional correspondence.

Učenje francuskog jezika (L2) i međujezik – studija slučaja

During the L2 learning process, students create a system of abstract language rules that allow them to understand and produce L2. Those rules are considered mental grammar (Elis 1997, 33) as well as interlanguage (Interlanguage) (Selinker 1972; 1975). Interlanguage is a stage in the L2 learning process that helps students mentally conceive new knowledge, shapes and structures. The language used by students is not just a result of the difference between the languages they already know and the languages they are learning, but also of the complete language system that has its own rules. Structures which occur within the interlanguage are not arbitrary. The aim of this paper is to describe the characteristics of French spoken by first year students and final year students of French language and literature, to explain what this says about the nature of their knowledge and how their interlanguage differs from the norm of standard French. This is achieved through a study of how the students develop the ability to produce certain grammatical structures. I will describe the mistakes students make and evaluate them through the methodology of L2 Theory of Adoption - SLA (Elis 1997, 16–23). The results of the research are based on the elements that characterize interlanguage of first year and fourth year students and will be used to redefine teaching goals and activities.
