Based on the example of the peculiar structure of the type choć ty siadłszy płacz, theauthor presents problems that emerged while working on a formalised descriptionof Northern Borderland phrasematics extracted from press and book publications issued in Vilnius in 1949–1985. He also presents a sample of his research concernedwith this very structure. The article lists the difficulties such as North-Eastern Bor-derland phrasematics being of no interest to researchers, which makes it impossibleto confront other viewpoints, on one hand, but also contributes to substantial gaps inthe material database on the other. These gaps make it impossible to draw necessarycomparisons, determine boundaries of given phrasemes, precisely establish theirstructural and semantic form, as well as chronology, geographical distribution andcircle of users. The researcher has to bridge those gaps on their own, which signifi-cantly delays the process of obtaining results. Yet another obstacle is the fact that thelist of East Slavic and Lithuanian phrasemes remains incomplete. Applying the rulesof the formalised description to the unit choć ty siadłszy płacz made it possible toestablish that it is just one of many textual realisations of the structure _i, choć_j. Theanalysis indicates that this formal stucture is shared by numerous phrasemes. Theauthor’s records contain 31 such units. Each of them has been analysed and present-ed in the form of a separate entry belonging to the appropriate group. As discussedin the study, all of them are based on East Slavic patterns, some also on Lithuanian, and are the result of calquing. In terms of their semantics, phrasemes of the type_i, choć_j can be classified into three groups, and the units in question can be viewedas representations of three distinct “archphrasemes”: _i, choć1_j, _i, choć _j2 and_i, choć3_j.
