Various factors of pronatalist social-demographic policy of modern Russia are characterized and the importance of reproductional potential of the family is introduced. The new concepts of exogene and endogen factors of social-demographic policy are introduced. On the materials of sociological research in Yaroslavl region the prevailing of endogen factors is proved and prospects of their account in social-demographic policy are introduced.

This essay explores the experimental nature of Christine Brooke-Rose’s narrative Thru and its attempts to break down the conventions of the genre of the novel. Reflecting on the singularity of this text that refuses to obey the laws of its genre but at the same time insists on forming part of it, the article discusses how this text should be approached and how it may be read. Through a close reading of the first few pages of Thru it links the question of genre with that of gender, and demonstrates how Brooke-Rose’s text exposes and deconstructs the gender hierarchy through its play with language, narrative structures and print conventions. This play creates a multiplicity of meaning that resists any attempt to reduce the novel to one single authoritative reading. Instead, it constantly supplements the many readings it makes possible, always allowing for an ‘other’ meaning, another interpretation.

Variations on Sex and Gender: Behaviour Wittig, and Foucault

If gender is the corporealization of choice, and the acculturation of the corporeal, then what is left of nature, and what has become of sex? If gender is determined in the dialectic between culture and choice, then what role does “sex” serve, and ought we to conclude that the distinction between sex and gender is anachronistic? Has Beauvoir refuted the original meaning of her famous formulation, or was that declaration more nuanced than we originally guessed? To answer, we must reconstruct Beauvoir’s distinction between sex and gender, and consider her theory’s present life in the work of Monique Wittig who considers the distinction anachronistic. We will then turn to Michel Foucault’s rejection of the category of “natural sex,” compare it with Wittig’s position, and attempt a reformulation of gender as a cultural project.

Disciplining Women: Michel Foucault and the Power of Feminist Discourse

In this essay I stage a confrontation between the genealogy of Michel Foucault and the feminist psychoanalytic theory of Dorothy Dinnerstein, Nancy Chodorow, Jane Flax and myself. I am obliged to resort to this artifice because — as far as I am aware — none of the parties to this confrontation has ever before addressed the position of the other: the feminist psychoanalytic theorists have yet to make the discourse of Foucault the object of their critique of masculine discourse as a simultaneous reaction to and denial of the power of the mother, and neither Foucault nor his followers have extended their deconstruction of the disingenuous discourse of “the True” to the discourse of the theorists of “mothering.” This confrontation is by no means arbitrary, however, because we shall see that from a Foucauldian perspective the discourse of the mother looks like a paradigm case of a “disciplinary” True Discourse, while from a feminist psychoanalytic standpoint the Foucauldian deconstruction of True Discourse betrays assumptions that can only be characterized as a classically male flight from maternal foundations. If feminism necessarily embraces these foundations, then a Foucauldian feminism is a contradiction in terms. I shall argue that this opposition between feminism and Foucault can be resolved in favor of feminism and — in part — against Foucault. This argument will entail a demonstration that there are aporias or internal inconsistencies in the Foucauldian position that can only be overcome through a reformulation of this position that would require us (a) to distinguish between libertarian and authoritarian True Discourses and (b) to assign the feminist mothering discourse to the former rather than the latter category. Thus Foucault’s discourse points — against itself — to the power of the very feminist discourse it would undermine.

Feminism and Marx: Integrating Kinship with the Economic

As feminist theory has challenged the assumption of the necessary and analytic distinctiveness of the family and state predominant in a liberal worldview, so also must it challenge the assumption of the analytic distinctiveness of the economic present in both a liberal and marxist worldview. The irony here is that in furthering this project, feminist theory has in Marx both a strong ally and a serious opponent. As we shall see in the following, feminists can employ much of the historical work of Marx and many marxists in comprehending the separation of family, state and economy as an historical and not natural phenomenon, and in comprehending the interaction of these spheres even in the context of their separation, on the other hand, Marx’s philosophical anthropology, by continuing and indeed reinforcing our modern assumptions of the autonomy of the economic, raises serious obstacles for marxism’s understanding of gender.

Feminist Consciousness in the Nineteenth Century: A Pariah Consciousness ?

“Traditional” history had not considered gender relations as a subject of study worthy of interest to researchers. Yet the status and the place of women in the nineteenth century were the subject of conflicts, the object of reflections, a constructed image before ending up as a separation of roles and sexes. Not that the nineteenth century is exceptional in this matter, but as in all fundamental historical periods in the course of which a new society is being formed, gender relations were redefined and the significance of the nineteenth century is to have reinforced considerably the division between public-private divisions: public space became the arena for masculine action, private space limited to the feminine garden. That is why the history of relations between men and women, an antagonistic relationship, is essential if we wish to understand one of the underpinnings of every society.

Social Work and Case Work in Spain during the 20th Century

Social Work did not appear in Spain until the 20th century. This delay was due to the slowness of the industrialization process. The social protection systems that where born at the beginning of the century had a charitable nature and were influenced by both the catholic thought and the European social policies of the moment. (Im-) Possibilities for Case Work in Socialist Bulgaria at the Example of Extramarital Motherhood

The aim of the article is to highlight some problems of the social policies in socialist Bulgaria as regards to extramarital births and motherhood. The possibilities and the impossibilities for case work and social control in this specific field result from the inherent contradiction between pronatalism and the affirmation of marriage. On the one hand, motherhood and child welfare services stood in the center of the socialist paternalistic and pronatalistic policy. Extramarital births also contributed to the intended population growth, but on the other hand, they seemed problematic from the point of view of family stability. Depending on policy priorities official attitudes towards extramarital births and single mothers, therefore, changed.

Family Therapy without the Family (Parallel Family Therapy Technique with a Juvenile Delinquent and his Family)

Author’s experiences as a family therapist show that the success of the re-socialization of young delinquents is achieved only if their family supports them and cares of them even during the period of incarceration. However, this ideal situation is frequently endangered due to stigmatization, shame, and isolation. That is the reason of why therapist should help not only the delinquent, but also his/her family in terms of activating their social and emotional resources.

Care, Monitoring, Control - the First Experimental Practice for Accommodation in Foster Families in Bulgaria (1937-1938)

The main sources for the reconstruction of these first steps of foster care in Bulgaria are the reports and surveys of doctor and visiting nurses of the Child Welfare Station at the Near-East Foundation in Sofia.

Psycho-Social Rehabilitation - First Master's Program in Bulgaria

In 2007 the first Master Program in Psycho-Social Rehabilitation was accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency for the period of 6 years. The Program was developed By the Department of Medical and Social Science at South-West University 'Neophyte Rilsky' Вlagoevgrad, MATRA project in partnership with the Global Initiative in the Community, and with the support of specialists from the Netherlands and Finland. Its implementation will help to promote a new model for equal treatment of people with severe psychiatric disorders. It will be part of the National Action Plan for implementation of Mental Health Policy of Bulgaria for the period 2004-2012.

Adopting Case Work Methods in Bulgaria: the First Steps

The individual method of social work was established in the 1930s by the organization of the female social advisors' service at the Municipality of Sofia. In the same time the case work methods were introduced in the curricula of the Women's Social School at the Bulgarian Women's Union influenced by the German model. Both the Municipality work and the education offered the possibilities for the professionalization of social work and its development as an academic social science.

The paper considers both the divergent opinions and the areas in which the two authors agree.
