Od jednotlivých diel k jednotlivým literatúram (prekladová tvorba pre deti a mládež na Slovensku v rokoch 1876 – 1945)

The study summarizes the results of the author’s previous researches about the entry of literary translations for children and youth to Slovak context. In the intentions of his literary-historical concept, the author examines the presence of individual national literatures in reading fund of the Slovak children and youth and he evaluates their participation in the process of changing a didactic-utilitarian model of literature to the artistic model. He thus brings the knowledge of how the translations from foreign literatures, as well as the specific literary works, more or less positively influenced the formation of the national literature. In the first part of the study, the author examines the process in didactic-utilitarian phase of development of the Slovak literature for children and youth (until 1918), in the second part he examines the process in the period of classical artistic works (1918 – 1945).

Zobrazenie neľahkého osudu Slovákov na Žitnom ostrove v trilógii Ivana Habaja Kolonisti

The paper points to the literary image of the everyday life of Slovaks in southern Slovakia. However, this Rye Island existence is panhuman – even determinative – behind historical events of the turbulent 20th century. In the monumental (up to nine hundred pages) and in an artistically strong way, the trilogy (and hence the paper) describes the complicated (and not always idyllic) coexistence of Slovaks and Hungarians in this space-time: their problems, conflicts, desires and expectations. The metatext also gradually introduces the broader scope of Ivan Habaj’s biobibliography and him as an important author of the ˊSlovak Southˊ in the cross-section of the specifics of his continuous literary work. Emphasis is placed on his ˊemblematicˊ trilogy Kolonisti (Colonists), which provides a cross-section of the time, surroundings and characters of chronotope. It is also mentioned by various literary-critical responses to origins, using both analysis and synthesis. Thanks to the gradually applied interpretative objective- subjective approach to prototexts, the perceptive reader can learn about the troubled fate of Slovak colonists who during the difficult historical periods of 1918, 1938, 1945, 1965... lived (and metaphorically still live) their not easy life in this corner of our homeland.

Folk Tales and Fairy Tales as Transmitters of Cultural Values Acculturation Process Through Bedtime Reading

The article studies the reflection of cultural values in folk tales and fairy tales. Based on the analysis of 20 original Slovak folk tales collected and slightly adapted by Pavol Dobšinský, we compared the values discovered in the texts with a set of values ascribed to the Slovak culture by two external (non-members of the culture) authors. Their insight and evaluation of the most important cultural values were considered as more objective than any local source due to the emotional load associated with any cultural matters. The article presents the variety of protagonists, both heroes and villains whose behaviour clearly exemplifies the appreciated behaviour patterns driven by values in contrast with the most detested ones. Those positive and negative messages help the mind of children to discover the unspoken standards of their culture as part of the acculturation process. Our results show that though the folk tales were created a long time ago they still carry relevant ideas worth transmitting to further generations.

Naratívne postupy v Belových Vedomostiach o Tekovskej stolici

The goal of the paper is to characterize the narrative techniques that Matthias Bel (1684 – 1749) used in his paper Vedomosti o Tekovskej stolici (Knowledge of the Tekov County, 1742), usually considered to be a historiographic work. It tracks the passages where Bel´s commentary overlaps with other genres or scientific branches, and draws attention to the elements that make it possible to classify the work as a chorography. Bel´s aim was not only to systematically collect the accurate facts about the region but, apparently, also to saturate various needs of well-educated readership who finds pleasure in examining the picture of the region through a miscellaneous collection of natural particularities and specific cultural manifestations. Since the commentary on the Tekov county seeks support in quotations from the travelogue Letters from Travels (1700) written by the Dutch traveller Jakob Tollius (1633 – 1696), a reader explores the region as a traveller not only being accompanied by well-educated and sophisticated Bel but also regularly through Tollius´s gripping narrations. Another dominant element of the commentary is a number of etiologic legends, which Bel in the position of a collector of oral folk culture presents as an outstanding narrator. Comparison with other authors who also visited and described the region (F. E. Brückmann, E. Brown) shows that these digressions are a specific feature of Bel´s picture of the Tekov county.

K novým cestám Hlbinovej poézie

The paper deals with the poetry of Pavol Gašparovič Hlbina written in the second half of the 1930s, when the author was one of the most productive Slovak poets, reviewers, translators and literary aestheticians. It traces the causes of changes in his poetics used especially in the collection of poems Dúha (The Rainbow, 1937) and also his relations to his close collaborator Rudolf Dilong (1905 – 1986), mainly in the context of their editorial activities in the magazines associated with Catholic Modernism (Postup a Prameň). It outlines the author´s poetry in the context of Slovak modification of poetism and maps his views on surrealism. When the collection Dúha (The Rainbow, 1937) was published, Hlbina was closely following the rising surrealist tendencies in the Slovak literary environment and writing numerous reflections on them. This collection of poems also represents the modern variant of his poetry. The other variant is religious poetry; this type of poetics was used when cooperating on an extensive project of St Adalbert Association, which was the Unified Catholic Hymnbook published in 1937.

STO ROKOV OD ZALOŽENIA NÁRODNEJ JEDNOTY, PRVÉHO TÝŽDENNÍKA SLOVÁKOV VO VOJVODINE

V historiografii Slovákov vo Vojvodine často bol vyzdvihovaný význam tlače v ich hospodárskom a spoločenskom živote. V období medzi dvoma svetovými vojnami Slováci vo Vojvodine mali vyvinutú vydavateľskú činnosť. Cieľom výskumu bolo zhrnúť doterajšie poznatky o novinách Národná jednota, ako i vypátrať niektoré nové skutočnosti o tomto prvom spoločensko-politickom týždenníku Slovákov vo Vojvodine. Analýzou jednotlivých ročníkov a čísel prichádza sa k uzáveru, že Národná jednota je bohatým, no nedostatočne využitým prameňom na skúmanie rôznych aspektov života juhoslovanských Slovákov v období medzi dvoma vojnami. Zvlášť sú hodnotné poznatky o národno-kultúrnom podnikaní, ale i o ich hospodárskom a politickom živote.

Tvorivá produkcia pre deti a mládež s textami Moniky Kompaníkovej v roku 2019: analyticko-kritická reflexia literárnej, ilustračnej a hudobnej zložky

In contemporary literature for children and young adults, intermedial works are becoming common place. It requires experts from a number of different branches of art to carry out their analysis, interpretation and evaluation. In 2019 Monika Kompaníková, an experienced author with notable awards for her works, published three books for children and young adults: Where is Ester N? (Slovak National Gallery), The end of the world and what is beyond (Artforum) and Toddler Punk: Ťulino’s musical stories (Monokel). Due to the specific children audience, the published books are characterized by a striking visual (illustrative) component, while Toddler Punk is a part of a larger music-book project. The analysis of the above-mentioned texts showed an unequal aesthetic and artistic value in both M. Kompaníková’s scope of work as well as in contemporary artistic works for children and young adults.

Vkročiť či nevkročiť do raja? Niekoľko nástrah, návodov a námetov pre dnešných i budúcich učiteľov – v pozadí románu Petra Andrušku Nevkročíš do raja

The contribution points to the importance of continuous development of society and literature. These two attributes are, of course, interconnected. The social macrospace (region, state) and microspace (especially in school) are characterized from a cultural point of view. The diversity of Slovak literature in the field of school themes is presented by parallels and confrontations with the novel of Peter Andruška. The novel is interpreted in detail, based on motifs that were characteristic for the difficult period in the history of Czechoslovakia (1967 – 1968). This actually combines the individual and with the social, past with present, but always stays valid. It points to various intricacies in the life of a small town, specifically of various human characters. In the background of the prototext, the spirit of this special period is evident, while the metatextcaptures the strange and the unique – even for today’s interesting coordinates of complex (living, moral, working, private) being in our state half a century ago.

Ślad Jerzego Pleśniarowicza pozostawiony w przekładach

This article focuses on the career of Jerzy Pleśniarowicz, the well-known poet of the Jozef Czechowicz group and Polish translator of Slavic literatures, as well as dramatist and theatre director. A discussion of the output of this poet and translator is accompanied by an analysis of his Polish translations of Slovak poetry presented in the 2018 volume Wiersze i przekłady wierszy (Poems and Translated Poems). The article considers Pleśniarowicz’s translation choices, elucidates his translation strategies, and discusses the contemporary significance of this poetry within the Polish sphere of reception.

Andrej Sládkovič v chorvátskej recepcii

The article is a contribution to the research of Slovak-Croatian literary and cultural relations. It focuses at the reception of Andrej Sládkovič (1820 – 1872) in the Croatian context. The second half of the 19th century is investigated through the analysis of contributions to Croatian literary magazines and newspapers such as Danica, Dragoljub, Vienac, Slavonac and Nada. The analysis of the 20th century and contemporary reception looks at texts published in various magazines, books and anthologies which contain translations by Luko Paljetak, Dubravka Dorotić Sesar and others. Since Sládkovič did not have any personal contacts with Croatian intellectuals of the time, the presence of his work in the 19th century Croatian cultural space was scarce. Wider recognition of his oeuvre came much later and in the late 20th century, it was intensified by the establishment of a Slovak studies programme at the University of Zagreb (as part of Czech studies in 1994 and as a separate programme in 1997). While in the 19th century, period magazines and newspapers – albeit sporadically – do mention Sládkovič, but do not contain any translations of his work, nowadays, translations are available, but are usually only known in the narrow academic circles of (mainly) Slavic studies experts.

Literatúra – mesto – Bratislava (po roku 1918): stav výskumu a vybrané kontexty

At the turn of the 21st century, the spatial turn that took place in various fields of humanities and social sciences could also be observed in literary studies. On the international level, research was inspired by topics and theories from such fields as architecture, urban studies, sociology or anthropology. Slovak literary studies, however, has not been significantly inspired by geopoetics and has not devoted systematic attention to the study of urban locations and motives. This article provides a basic overview of existing research into the representations of urban settings in Slovak literature. It maps topics and methodological background of individual research initiatives with a special focus on literary and artistic representations of Bratislava. The paper also outlines new lines of inquiry, such as the relationship between literary representations of the city in the post-socialist Central Europe and the phenomenon of nostalgia. It also suggests the possibilities of comparative research. With regards to the latter, the author argues that juxtaposing literary representations of Bratislava with representations of urban settings in the literatures of other European “small nations” (Miroslav Hroch) offers more fruitful ground for research than searching for similarities in culturally and geographically closer Hungarian or Czech literature. The article also provides a list of selected literature on the problematics of urban representations in Slovak literature and culture.

Subjekt a mesto (a politika): Polstoročie Bratislavy v textoch Janka Alexyho

The article aims at providing a picture of how Bratislava was portrayed in the texts of the Slovak author and painter Janko Alexy (1894 – 1970), written between 1921 and 1968. The paper combines the knowledge of Slovak and Czechoslovak culture and history with biographical and artistic facts about Alexy’s life and work. With regards to the biography of the author, the article drew on his own memoirs, Ján Abelovský’s monograph, texts by Ján Smrek and various period articles. The paper also makes use of the work of O. Mongin, P. Málek and V. Barborík. It provides an insight into the relationship between the city and the subject and reconstructs the complex image of the period circumstances in its background. It outlines several periods that document Alexy’s changing attitude towards the city and the gradual national appropriation of Bratislava. The identity of the current capital of Slovakia was changing from a multi-ethnic town to a city occupied by a single majority ethnic group. These shifts are illustrated on several Alexy’s texts.

Obraz Bratislavy v pamätiach a publicistike Mila Urbana

The article looks at the ways Bratislava is portrayed in Milo Urban’s (1904 – 1982) memoirs and journalistic texts. It starts with the reflection of an essay published in the mid-1930s in Elán magazine and continues with an analysis of the topographic outline of the city presented in the second and third part of Urban’s memoirs. The latter texts provide a look at the city from the point of view of a stranger, newcomer. The descriptions give an insight into the emotional state of the narrator and his view of Bratislava, characterised by his exclusion from the social space of the city. The texts also contain musings on urban imagination. Common attributes of all analysed texts lie in the confrontation of modernisation with Slovak tradition. The article also outlines the possibilities of further research into Urban’s work through the analysis of urban topoi: the formerly unfamiliar Bratislava gradually becomes a known and natural space – although this process is a problematic and not finite one.

Bondyho bratislavská Epizóda

The introductory section of the article reconstructs the arrival of the Czech writer, philosopher and foremost member of underground culture, Egon Bondy (1930 – 2007) to Bratislava in 1993. There he became part of the city’s intellectual and cultural (literary, musical and artistic) life. The novella Epizódaʼ96 [Episode ʼ96] Bondy wrote in Slovak is an important contribution to the literary identity of the city. The article interprets the close relationship between Bondy’s narrator and space and also looks at the central topoi present in Bondy’s portrayal of Bratislava. He presents the city via “emptiness”. Diachronically, this means putting into spotlight some of the key episodes (unknown territories) of the weakened historical memory of the city (life and work of the sculptor F. X. Messerschmidt and the fates of the Jewish community). Synchronically, the author focuses on the structure of the city formed by socialist planning and on the empty spaces as natural spaces that to a great extent determine Bratislava’s genius loci (the Danube, the Little Carpathians).

Povaha a interpretácia slovacík v stredovekých písomnostiach Vatikánskeho tajného (dnes apoštolského) archívu

The study focuses on the scope and significance of research on sources related to Slovak history in the Vatican Apostolic Archive. From the point of view of documenting the Slovak aspect of the Vatican sources, may be possible speak about its several special characteristics. In particular, these are slovaciks that significantly complement the historical dictionary of the Slovak language, and here especially in the onomastic documentation of the historical side of toponyms and anthroponyms. Another group is represented by documents that relate to the Slavic aspect in terms of content. These are: a) data on realities in relation to the territory of Slovakia and its population communities, b) data on the slovakity of the historical and residential area, c) data of a generally Slavic nature in relation to (also cultural-ecclesiastical) the territory of Slovakia. This is illustrated by several examples.

Jazykovedný odbor Matice slovenskej a moderná slovakistika v prvých poprevratových rokoch (1920 – 1930)

After the re-establishment of Matica slovenská national heritage organization in 1919, several new research departments were founded to provide more favorable scientific climate for scholars in Slovakia. The Linguistics Department at Matica slovenská had been of particular importance, since its activities can be considered as a basis of institutionalized research in the field of linguistics. The author for the paper describes in detail all the accomplishments of the department in the first phase of its existence (1920 – 1930), with a special emphasis on the modern Slovak linguistics have also been analyzed in the paper. The language development had been significantly by the state policy on the common “Czecho¬slovak language” as the official language of the republic. The linguistics department had responded to this, inter alia, by preparing a set of Slovak orthography. The paper points out (research is based on the materials from archives, secondary literature, linguistics related activities of scholars etc.) the activity of the Linguistics department.
