The Features of the Macedonian Standard Language in the Journalistic Sub Style (Columns)

The main function of the language is to serve as the most sophisticated means for mutual understanding among people. It is a phenomenon tightly connected with the society and the culture. As they grow, develop and change, the language also changes in order to satisfy the need of its speakers. The language culture is, in fact, part of every individual’s common culture. It refers to the correct use and implementation of the standard language norm in every sphere of one’s living and functioning, including the articles in the journalistic sub style which should keep and promote this norm. Thus, the aim of the paper is to present the features of the Macedonian standard language in the newspaper columns, and determine whether the language used in them deviates from the already established language features of the journalistic sub style and from the language norm as well. The research has a qualitative paradigm and descriptive design. The sample consists of columns that are published in the Republic of North Macedonia. Analysis, synthesis and comparison are the methods used for processing the data and gaining conclusions. The research reveals that the language features and the deviations from the norm in the columns are identical to the ones already determined in the previous researches of the journalistic sub style. In the same time, the research shows the new language features and deviations from the norm in almost every language area (phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicology).

In this paper, the concept of family in contemporary Serbian language was presented based on the material of all relevant Serbian (Serbo-Croatian) dictionaries: the etymological aspects from the Skok’s etymological dictionary, the historical aspects from the Vuk’s dictionary and the Dictionary of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, modern understanding of this concept from the thesaurus Dictionary of the Serbo-Croatian literary and the folk language Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Dictionary of literary Serbian language, additional linguistic aspects (derivational and associative) from the Semantic-Derivative Dictionary, the Associative and the Reverse Associative Dictionary, the encyclopedic aspects on the definitions of this term from encyclopedias, in addition to the material of texts: folk proverbs, newspaper texts and the texts from the electronic corpus, as well as on the material of the survey, in accordance with the methodological foundations of the Lublin cognitive ethnolinguistics school and the program of the EUROJOS seminar which proposes the development of a volume of the Axiological lexicon of the Slavs and their neighbors devoted to the concept of FAMILY. It has been shown that the family in the language image of the world of the speakers of the Serbian language is conceptualized as a multidimensional dynamic concept that includes psychosocial, (psychological and social), biological / genealogical (existential) and cultural (axiological) dimension, and which in the knowledge of language speakers, occurs in the form of two models: 1) an ideal / idealized family and 2) a real family, which are valued on the basis of their comparison, realized as an ambivalent relation to the basic values of the family.

Partitativni kvantifikatori u engleskom i crnogorskom jeziku

This paper analyzes partitive quantifiers and tries to deepen the linguistic understanding of partitive quantifiers, as well as to draw attention to the significance of the notion of partitive quantifiers for general linguistic theory. CROATIAN AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE IN CANADA

This paper examines some aspects of language contact in a Croatian-English bilingual speech community in Canada. The primary goal of the paper is to better understand language proficiency, language use, and attitudes of second-generation heritage speakers of Croatian. In officially multicultural Canada, the roles of Croatian and English are both complementary and distinct. Indeed, there is an obvious imbalance in the position and use of the two languages. Whereas English functions as a dominant or majority language (one of the two official languages), Croatian is a heritage or minority language. Although many studies have been conducted on different heritage languages, little attention has been paid to Croatian as an immigrant heritage language in Canada. Therefore, a closer examination of heritage language development and practices in this bilingual speech community is necessary. The research presented here is based on data from two sources: the Canadian census data and the data from a sociolinguistic survey conducted in the Croatian community in the greater Toronto area through a questionnaire. In order to describe linguistic practices in the community and create a linguistic profile of the second-generation heritage speaker of Croatian, the study focuses on the following issues: the acquisition of language skills in English and Croatian, the use of the two languages in everyday life, the learning of the heritage language, and attitudes towards maintenance of the heritage language.

Talijanizmi u Kvaderni kapitula lovranskoga

The paper examines the presence of italianisms in documents contained in "Kvaderna kapitula lovranskoga", edited by Damir Viškanić. "Kvaderna" containes entries in Croatian, Italian and Latin, but only Croatian entries will be analysed. The aim is to extract italianisms and to conduct etymological and lexicological analysis. In doing so, the immediate etymology of loanwords (the last donor language) will be determined, and subequently the remote etymology will be attempted. The term of italianism refers to loanwords from Venetian, Triestine, Friulian or Italian.

JEZIK RAŠKOGA RUDARA

With the end of the World War II and the fall of the Independent State of Croatia started a new period in the standardization of the Croatian language, which received a substantial media coverage due to its political engagement. The interest in linguistic issues thus became more widespread in the general population. This paper illustrates the main guidelines of the language policy during the milestone events from the AVNOJ period, the Novi Sad meeting and Novi Sad Orthography, the Declaration on the name and status of the Croatian Literary language and the Croatian Spring, up to the 1990s. Since the language of the media was not free of ideological attitudes, this research will show how the political situation affected the language of Istrian periodicals. The research is focused on the orthographical and linguistic peculiarities of the magazine “Raški rudar“ (Raša Miner), issued intermittently by the workers’ union branch of the Association of Miners and the management of the “Istarski ugljenokopi“ (Istrian collieries) from 1947 to 1990. The aim is to compare them to the then normatively acceptable and orthographical solutions. The analysis of texts written by “ordinary“ people, workers, will shed additional light on the repercussions of the language policy in the socialist period, which will help complete the image of the orthography and language of the time.

PROZODIJSKE OSOBITOSTI GOVORA NISKOGA U DALMATINSKOJ ZAGORI

The paper deals with prosodic features of the local dialect of Nisko in Dalmatian Zagora. The research is conducted on the basis of data excerpted from the corpus of dictaphone recordings. The collected data is compared with existing descriptions of the prosodic features of the local dialects of Dalmatian Zagora and with data collected in neighboring settlements of the Muć-Lećevica area (Gizdavac, Gornje Postinje, Kladnjice, Konjsko) and Zamosorje (Kotlenice). The accent inventory of the local dialect of Nisko is typical NeoŠtokavian, with two falling ( i ) and two rising accents ( ̀ i ́) and well-preserved pretonic length. Rising accents rarely can apper on monosyllabic words, as well as falling accents on the medial sylablles of polysyllabic words. Lenghtening before sonorants occurs in internal syllables before any consonant cluster whose first member is sonorant (-RC-), and in final syllables only before j (-j#). »The Kanovački« accent is attested on the short Protoslavic vowels *e, *o, *ъ i *ь (róda, but jèla) and on the short prefixes in derived nouns with the structure ‘prefix + stem + zero morph’ (prózor, but pònos).

HRVATSKI LINGVIST DALIBOR BROZOVIĆ

The article analyses the linguistic oeuvre of Dalibor Brozović with additional comments on his various scientific interests. What is emphasized is his versatility, his work in sociolinguistics, genetic linguistics and linguistic typology, as well as his various efforts in suitably describing the Croatian language. It is found that Dalibor Brozović has contributed considerably to the modernization of Croatian linguistics, and that he approached the study of Croatian from a new general linguistic framework. An expert in Slavonic Studies and Comparative Linguistics, he was successful in studying other languages as well, contributing on a global level to the field of standard language typology. His oeuvre is marked by a wide area of competence, a modern approach, daring and lucidity in research techniques, and ean laborate and delicate style.

VIDEO U NASTAVI INOJEZIČNOGA HRVATSKOG

Video is finding an increasing use as a medium in education, classroom teaching as well as in e-learning. The thesis of this paper is based on the assumption that the best way of acquiring knowledge is learning by doing and giving a student the main role in teaching. Therefore, this paper examines the possibilities that video offers in teaching foreign languages, especially in teaching Croatian as a second and foreign language (L2) in Croatia. Drawing on theories of empiricism and constructivism, foreign language teaching and target groups are analysed. Teaching outcomes that influence the choice of media and technology are determined by Bloom’s taxonomy. Four possible uses of video in a foreign language teaching are presented, after which positive and negative elements of using this medium are pointed out. This paper contributes to promotion of new technologies which call for a new paradigm in teaching in which the roles of all three actors in teaching process – teacher, student and teaching materials - will be changed.

Примјери развоја алонима у српском језику (прилог српској ономастици)

Their existence is a result of different ways through which the same onomastic unit (through mediator language) is linked to Serbian onomastics. ZAVISNA BROJČANA KVALIFIKACIJA

In this paper, dependant numerical qualification is investigated as a specific type of qualification. Its occurance in languaage is depicted and possibilities of stating quantitative – qualitative meaning through number as numerical linguistic unit are examined. Numerical quantifier is modfier on the basis of which dependant numerical qualification is divided into premodifying and postmodifying qualification. Congruent and incongruent depenant numerical qualification are discussed. The criteria for setting of array of semantic types of postmodifying dependant numerical qualification are determined. We realise tha the parametric size cannot be the only criterion for determination of its semantic types. The paper is based on the analysis of numerical qualification in noun phrases and adjective phrases. The examples in the analysis are not exclusively related to a certaim corpus; instead, they were taken from various sources for the purpose of obtaining data as complete as possible on dependant numerical qualification as semantic language category as well as data on manners of functioning of numerical quantifier in language in general and its status in grammar books.

O INICIJALNIM DISKURSNIM OZNAKAMA U HRVATSKOM I TALIJANSKOM JEZIKU

The topic of this article is to identify some Croatian linguistic elements that can function as initial discourse markers and to compare them to the equivalent elements in the Italian language. The insufficient representation of their discourse usage in Croatian and Italian dictionaries and grammar books is pointed out by the authors. Some of the difficulties which occur when describing discourse markers are indicated: semantic and pragmatic meaning oscillation, possibilities of initial marker usages in various contexts and with different functions, as well as their salient multi-functionality. Since these discourse markers have interactional functions which indicate a relationship towards the interaction process, special attention is paid to the discourse structure rules, conversation forms and mechanisms that control the communication processes in both languages. By comparing Croatian and Italian examples, the authors attempt to recognize the prototypical representatives of the functional category of initial discourse markers and to exemplify some similarities and differences in the usage of each language element which functions as initial discourse marker.

JEZIK PUČKIH PROZA HRVATA U BAČKOJ I SRIJEMU TE U ANDZABEGU

In this paper, the linguistic characteristics of Šokci and Bunjevci Croats in Bačka and Croats in Srijem, as well as Croats in Andzabeg (south of Budapest) are described. The analysis is based upon the brief prose noted by Balint Vujkov, while listening to local storytellers who were born at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. It is determined that, a hundred years ago, the local idioms of Croats in Srijem maintained features of the Slavonian dialect, to which they essentially belong.

ON THE BORDER AREA BETWEEN SEMANTICS AND STYLISTICS (THE ASSOCIATIVE FIELDS OF THE TOKEN BREAD IN STILIAN CHILINGIROV'S NOVEL "OUR DAILY BREAD")

In the article an attempt is made to study the associative fields of the word bread in Stilian Chilingirov's novel "Our Daily Bread" (1926). This experience refers to the boundary area between semantics and stylistics and concerns lexical stylistics. From the very first steps of the development of semantics, the first semantics make attempts to classify the various semantic changes, as the basis for these classifications is different - logical, psychological, sociological. The psychological basis for some of the classifications is the association of ideas, which was later further developed in semiotics. Associations are based on two categories - similarity of ideas, and neighborhood of ideas. Their combination leads to a change in the meaning of the words. In the study we try to use some of these associative fields and their influence on the meaning of the work of art. As a kind of research, it creates certain perspectives in the attempt to make sense of the artistic style.
