Dishes and food products – the way they are made, their complexity, taste and appearance – are all part of culture and tradition that are created by people feasting at the table. While discussing various everyday issues, they also talk about food – they praise it, complain about it and criticize it. Eating meals with friends and family both in everyday situations and on special occasions creates a special mood. It creates an occasion for confessions, advice, jokes, memories and reflections about life. Various sayings and proverbs, which enrich the culture of a given country or region are brought to life on these occasions. Croatia is not an exception in this regard. Many proverbs and sayings connected with local culinary traditions exist in Croatian. Some of them are known widely throughout the country, others only in certain territories. Numerous proverbs are known throughout Croatia, albeit with a slightly changed imagery. The proverbs presented in my article are found in a dictionary by Josip Kekez, a renowned Croatian paremiologist. It is worth noting that they comprise selected material, which does not cover information present in internet dictionaries. Further in the paper I describe regional proverbs and songs, which are an important element presenting the diversity of Croatian dialects. Each Croatian phrase is accompanied by my Polish translation, which clarifies its meaning. Additionally, I quote other language variants like jargonisms and foreign lexis in culinary vocabulary with a view to present the extraordinary abundance and diversity of Croatian culinary lexis.

The paper gives a comparative historical analysis of derivative words with the i / i/y- interfix and a verb as the first component in Serbian, Russian and Polish from the standpoint of contemporary Slavic morphology (derivatology). The aim is to provide their description in terms of semantic variation. The author ascertains that all the three languages feature a derivational model of forming expressive lexis by means of the i / i/y- interfix, predominantly nouns, of mostly humorous and pejorative meaning. A special group is formed by onyms (nicknames turned surnames, but also toponyms, oronyms, hydronyms etc). This type of words first occurred in Serbian and Russian in the thirteenth century (possibly in Serbian in the eleventh century), and in Polish in the fifteenth century. Judging by the available sources, derivatives with the i- interfix appear frequently in historical as well as modern Serbian, Polish and Russian (much more in Serbian and Polish than in Russian). In Serbian and Russian pre-nineteenth-century sources chiefly given names and nicknames-turnedsurnames were noted (in Russian, also some animal and plant names as well as abstract nouns). In Old Polish, words of the discussed kind are zoological and botanical lexemes; from Middle Polish on, the lexemes encompass all semantic categories characteristic of modern Serbian and Russian. It should, however, be stressed that the inaccessibility of the spoken language as well as the limited number of sources introduce considerable uncertainty to observations regarding the time of origin and vocabulary of the first centuries of Slavic languages. This applies especially to expressively marked lexemes, a considerable portion of which is constituted by common nouns of the “A (verb) + -i- / -i/y- + B” model. In contemporary Serbian, Polish and Russian, the lexis formed by means of this derivational model is almost equally developed conceptually and relates predominantly to the same phenomena. Expressive words in all three languages are formed in the processes of metonymisation, metaphorisation, personification, hyperbolization and grotesque, and are characterized by numerous derivational and semantic equivalents.

The development of a new literary language requires elaboration of the system of abstract nouns. The use of abstract lexis, of theological terminology, and a big number of compound words differentiates the Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) literary vocabulary from every Slavic dialect in the 9th century and today. The present study of the abstract nouns formed with suffixes in the Egipetski Paterik sheds light on an early stage of the development of abstract lexis in the Old Bulgarian literary language. Such nouns characterize translator’s style and the challenges he met. This paper discusses the following types of abstract nouns in the Egipetski Paterik: abstract nouns of feminine gender with suffixes -ость, -ъınʜ, -ота/-ета, -тва, -ʜna, -ьва and neuter abstract nouns in -nʜѥ/-тʜѥ, -ʜѥ, -ьство и -ьствʜѥ. The semantics of the lexemes examined is discussed according to the context in which they are used. Further, the use of these lexemes in the Egipetski Paterik is juxtaposed with their use in three types of sources: the so-called classical Old Bulgarian (OCS) corpus from the 10th–11th centuries; texts originating from 10th-century Preslav that survive in later copies; and similar – in style and language – Old Bulgarian translations of paterica.

The article attempts to present the comparison of two translator’s achievements: Zbigniew Dmitroca’s Radio Swoboda and Jerzy Czech’s Wdrapałem się na piedestał. The anthologist’s work is considered here as both the act of translation and revelation — joining the translation of literary texts and their compilation in anthologies with scrutinizing the particular writers and literary phenomena as well as the process of translation itself, and introducing a new, transforming quality to the native poetry. A translator-anthologist can be perceived in that perspective as a link between two literary cultures, and also as an initiator of changes and an independent creator who develops, in his own language and on his own conditions, a certain new Polish canon of Russian poetry

The linguistic phenomena we encounter in teaching Bulgarian as a foreign language are focused not only on the field of psycholinguistics, but also to the vast field of applied linguistics and linguistic pragmatics. Having on mind the genetic proximity between Slavic languages and the specific difficulties in studying them, we focus our attention on a not so typical linguistic interference, namely between very close – Slavic – languages, one of them is a mother, first language. In the proces of teaching of Bulgarian as a foreign language of Slavs even greater role has the comparative and confrontational analysis, because the aim is to highlight the differences between Bulgarian and other closely related languages that can be a prerequisite for any errors, distortions arising from language contacts observed by us in this specific psycholinguistic situation. The text reflects the problems of tranfer and interference between Czech and Bulgarian in the proces of their study. There are some defenitions of the proces of transfer and interference from psycholinguistical point of view and then language material with examples of the interference in the process of translation.

The article discusses the two Old Bulgarian lexemes – рать и реть – on the basis of material from lexicographic reference tools, published sources, and collections of electronic resources from Slavonic written monuments. The study centres on the complex and often extremely conflicting semantics of реть. The emergence of the two words, which are related as regards phonetic structure, is analysed within the context of the theory put forward by Vladimir Georgiev concerning the Protoslavonic vowel system and the results of the liquid consonant metathesis in the Slavonic language, including Old Bulgarian. An explanation is offered regarding the comparatively restricted regional origin of реть, a lexeme that has entered literary Old Bulgarian through texts linked with the Preslav Literary Centre.

Marin Drinov was one of the first Bulgarian scientists that continues and enriches the tradition born during the Bulgarian national revival of developing the Bulgarian literary language by analyzing it on a broad scientific basis and at the level of the philological scientific thought of his time. What impresses in his concept on the Bulgarian literary language was his ability to summarize and analyze vast factual material, and with a brief expression to characterize the multidimensional and complex linguistic phenomena and processes. The scientist and educator in practice took a lot of care and effort to make the correct device of our speech and of unified spelling. The philological studies of Marin Drinov were precious and they were a part of the new Bulgarian language history. They were directly related to those processes and phenomena that led to the realization of the necessity of a unified standardized and codified language system which represented and defined the literary language characteristics of the nation.

The article represents some of the most famous Slavic manuscripts from the collection of the National Library “St. st. Cyril and Methodius”, received in the early twentieth century, acquired from the archive and the personal library of Professor Marin Drinov, leading Bulgarian scientist researching Bulgarian and South Slavic literature, history and culture and one of the leading lecturers in Kharkov University in Bulgarian history and literature. The author also briefly discusses some of M. Drinov’s papers related to various historical and philological projects on original texts of old Bulgarian literature as well as some written by famous Byzantine writers.

The research paper focuses on the question of the typology of functional semantic fields in the contemporary Bulgarian language. In the analysis comments have been made on A. V. Bondarko and I. Kutsarov’s popular classification models of FSF in the Russian and Bulgarian languages, emphasizing on some problematic parts in the points of view of the two authors.The new classification of FSF presented in the exposition is based on several main criteria: 1) a sphere of functioning; 2) presence/ absence of a structural centre (nucleus); 3) structure of the field periphery; 4) a degree of the functional autonomy; 5) semantic scope. There are arguments in favour of the belief that FSF build microfields not only around the marked members of the nucleus – the morphological category, but also around the unmarked members (having both general and main meaning).

The present paper aims at presenting some of the possible approaches to understanding the ingenuity of the various phraseologies when they are introduced in the process of studying Bulgarian as a foreign language.The development of certain skills to use Bulgarian set phrases is considered a process that takes place in three stages, each of which has a specific purpose and requires a specific approach. The study also includes appropriate tasks and exercises suitable for each of these stages, which aim at improving the receptive and productive skills of Bulgarian language learners when mastering the phraseologies.

The article presents the appearance, the historical destiny and the distribution of the Old Bulgarian verbs with semantic ‘to love’. It also analyzes the other meanings come ‘to accustom’ of обикна, ‘to be in good relationships with someone of драговам, ‘to kiss’ of полюбя еtc.

Bulgaria among other countries in the European Union faces the challenges of immigrant integration in society, which is an important, complex and delicate task. Numerous institutions in the country set primarily educational and cultural purposes related to the promotion of the history, language and traditions of the Bulgarians.The paper considers the linguistic and cultural adaptation of migrants, who participate in language courses and cultural integration under international projects and programs. An important factor is the communicative ethnic setting and cultural events of presentation of books, movies, exhibitions, etc. The successful integration and adaptation is a process that develops and implements locally. One of the effective tools of legal migration and accelerated adaptation and integration into the host society is the promotion of immigrants to the study of the Bulgarian language and to the learning about the cultural traditions of the people and about the norms of behavior accepted in Bulgarian society.National educational and cultural policies on migration and integration of migrants are constantly changing, in accordance with the human rights and cultural values.

The article comments on trends in literature education in the high school stage based on an analysis of works by participants in the National Round of the Bulgarian Language and Literature Olympiad. Emphasis is placed on changing the receptive experience of modern students. It is argued that students have difficulties in perceiving things in their procedural relationship and focuses on the problem of misunderstanding literary texts. Attention is paid to problems in the Bulgarian literary science, which are designed in the literature programs in the high school stage and, respectively, in the textbooks of literature.

The work addresses the issue of project-oriented literature education as a mode of forming, developing and maintaining skills, which implies interactive practices and at the same time - convergence of the pro-learning process towards constructing meaning, active learning - through action.The use of Project - oriented learning in literature classes (grades 8 – 12) has led to the increase of students‘ willingness to study (in particular, to form, develop and maintain practical, cognitive, meta-cognitive and interdisciplinary skills), of their ability to do work of significance, and it has also led to their need to be evaluated and engaged in the process of studying information in a way close to the one adults apply to learn and demonstrate their knowledge.
