This study was conducted to identify the effects of the alternative assessment approaches based education during the "Light" unit of Science and Technology class in 7th grade on the academic achievements and attitudes of students. The study conducted in Izmir region during the second semester of 2014-2015 academic years incorporated a total of 53 7th-grade students, of which 25 were in the experiment group and 28 were in the control group. During the survey, the "Light" unit of the curriculum was taught to the students of the experiment group with the use of alternative assessment approaches (concept maps, concept cartoons, semantic features analysis, diagnostic trees, structural communication grid, crossword puzzles, posters and science journals) developed by the researchers to supplement the current curriculum and generally presented as worksheets, while the unit was taught to the students of control group using only current curriculum. "Academic Achievement Test" was implemented in order to evaluate the achievements degree of both experiment and control group students in relation to the Science and Technology class and "Science Attitude Scale" was implemented in terms of pre-test and post-test in order to evaluate the attitude towards the Science and Technology class. In this regard, it can be pointed out that a quasi-experimental research design with a pre-test and post-test control group was implemented during the study. According to the data obtained from the study, statistically significant difference between the post-test results of experiment group and control group students was observed in favor of the experiment group students. In terms of the attitude towards the Science and Technology class, being another variable of this study, a significant difference between the post-test results of both groups was observed in favor of the experiment group students. Based on these conclusions, certain recommendations were made in relation to the use of alternative assessment approaches as a learning tool in science classes.

In the post-Cold War era, with democratic peace theory on the rise, efforts to promote democracy around the world have flourished. Western and Western democratic values-oriented states in particular have acted on the belief that democracy promotion would contribute to world peace. Yet this process is not as utopian as described; it is also highly contingent, with no single prescription for success nor common idea of what the end result should look like. This study elaborates the problematic aspects of democracy promotion by examining the case of US and EU democracy promotion in the Western Balkans. The problems uncovered in this analysis fall into three categories: 1) those stemming from the very nature of democracy promotion as an exercise, 2) those specific to the promoters of democracy and 3) those relating to the particular characteristics or circumstances of the target state or region. Based on the analysis, this study concludes that such problems will continue to arise so long as the promoters of democracy continue to approach the process monolithically, without sensitivity to, and synchronization with, the cultural and political realities on the ground in target states.

Research on art education has been being carried out since 1970s as an academic research field in our country. These studies include different kinds of subjects, methods, problems, and solutions of art education. However, it is observed that generally there is a tendency towards pictorial representations both in the course “Visual Arts” carried out in the primary and secondary education; and research related to the field. From this point of view, this study aims at investigating and objectivizing the proposition stated above over postgraduate dissertations. In this sense, the subjects and methods of the dissertations, written in the master and doctorate programs of higher education institutes which give art education, aimed at three-dimension perceptions in visual arts course in primary and secondary education were investigated. Another aim of this study is comparing the results obtained from the dissertations with the attainments directed to three dimensional works in the Guidebook of Ministry of Education, Visual Arts lesson. Accordingly, this is a descriptive study utilizing survey research method. The samples of the study are the full-text dissertations on the National Dissertation Center Database created by Higher Education Council (HEC). When the explored dissertations were examined, the results of the study showed that quite similar or close subjects were repeated, the problematic situation was revealed with applications tried and discovered less. In the case of methods, it was found that qualitative research method was widely used. When the subjects of the dissertations were compared with the attainments, it was concluded that neither sufficient research was conducted on three-dimensional perception and practice in dissertations nor these attainments found sufficient place among Ministry of Education’s attainments.

In this research, an evaluation was made of “study styles” within the framework of the Weinstein/Mayer learning strategies, which could be applied by students within their personal study periods of the Solfeggio by Emanuel Bach. In recent years, learning strategies have started to become widespread as an important area because they are a guide for students to form and evaluate their own learning situations. Therefore, the evaluation of piano training within musical instrument education will provide a valuable result. The aim of this study was for students to be aware of their own learning paths within their personal study processes and to be a guide at the point of forming ‘study styles’. To achieve this, technical analysis was made of the work, and as a result of this analysis, the work was separated into 5 technical motifs. The study styles produced by the researcher directed to main theme motif were grouped within the framework of Weinstein/Mayer learning strategies. As a result of the research, ‘study styles’ were presented as an option which could be selected by students in their personal piano practice periods according to their own learning status. These study styles can be applied to every work being studied.

Teaching portrait in Art lessons varies according to the methods and techniques, teacher’s profile, working environment and student’s profile. What is aimed is to determine the teaching techniques for portrait, teacher’s movement area, the physical definition of classroom and the dominant teaching method and to associate it with the teacher and student. For the lesson that is determined for research, an observation and research study has been done in a secondary school in Aksu/Antalya. The lesson was recorded and in order to be analyzed, it was observed by Educational Criticism model. In addition, for “Typical Case Sampling”, a teacher and 7th grade students were determined. The data in the research was acquired from the recording of the lesson, visual and written document, the interview with the teacher and and the observation. In this study, Educational Criticism model has been used and the determination of the presentation of teacher and the teaching methods has been aimed. We can see that the teacher was able to spend enough time with every student since the number of students was not many. The art lesson was also chosen as an elective course so the art lessons became a three-hour-lesson instead of only one. We can see that the subject can be thought easily if there is more time. In this study, how teacher profiles and the teaching method effect student’s learning and their attitude towards the lesson can be seen clearly.
