Mediální reprezentace zásahu v pražských mešitách a její reflexe muslimy žijícími v ČR

This paper combines two research topics. The first one is an analysis of media representation of the police intervention in Prague mosques on 25 April 2014. Articles published on the online servers Aktualne.cz, denik.cz, iDnes.cz, IhNED.cz, Lidovky.cz, novinky.cz and in the printed newspapers MF Dnes, Právo, Lidové Noviny, hospodářské noviny from April 2014 to December 2014 were analysed in terms of a content analysis and interpretative reading with the goal of determining the key frames in which media referred to the event. The second one focuses on the responses of a specific social group, Muslims living in the Czech Republic, to the media representation of this event. Data collected in half-structured interviews revealed that the majority of the informants perceived it as too shallow which conformed with the official explanation of the event by state representatives. In accordance with hall’s categorization, one can speak of an oppositional reading. The study reveals the stigmatization of Muslims living in the Czech Republic by the media framing of the event.

Gry Imperium z perspektywy czasu. Refleksja nad wybranymi zagadnieniami w kontekście zmian w branży gier ostatniej dekady

This article features an analysis of one of the most prominent books in the development of critical theory on video games: Games of Empire by Nick Dyer-Witheford and Greig de Peuter. Since its publication in 2009, 8 years have already passed. This might seem a short moment from an academic viewpoint, but it is really long if we consider all the changes happening every day in New Media. This poses two questions: is the content of this book still relevant? and did the passage of time proved it correct or wrong? This article tries to answer these questions by comparing the arguments from the book (especially concepts like futuristic accumulation) with the actual state of the game industry in a year 2017 (especially issues concerning microtransactions).

Odpowiedzialność mediów w rękach publiczności Doświadczenia ze Szwecji

The reports on public trust in media are the foundation for the article. While most of the countries struggle with the implosion of media credibility, the indicators of trust in Sweden remain stable. The aim of the article is to seek for mechanisms, that support professional journalism, with special focus on the role of the public. Public complaints to regulation and self-regulation institutions from 2016 are analyzed. The in-depth interviews with the representatives of MPRT and Pressombudsman helped to formulate the conclusions.

Media messages and eating disorders: Taste and price of a message

Eating habits have become increasingly irrational in the last century; a variety of eating disorders have appeared. Obesity seems to be impossible to cure. Nowadays, the impact of media-marketing is the most powerful social influence on eating habits. Media has five main messages on eating and the body: 1. “Be thin!” 2. “Consume and eat!” 3. “Be afraid of food!” 4. “Food will disappear!” 5. “You are not feminine / masculine enough!” Most of these messages and directions are inconsistent with each other: e.g. “Buy and eat more, but remain thin!” The double-bind communication of media-marketing is pathogenic and schizoid. Food-related media messages are multi-layered and contradictory on many levels, so it would be more appropriate to talk about a multiple bind. The paper offers new communication strategies in order to manage the chaotic information on eating and to decrease the inconsistencies on the topic.

From a legal point of view, assignment of a message to any of the journalistic or literary genres does not matter. Journalistic material, whatever genre it is, may expose the writer to criminal or civil liability. Disciplinary liability can’t be forgotten, although enforcing compliance with ethical codes is extremely diffi cult (if not impossible). Journalists should also not forget about the requirements of copyright and to avoid plagiarism. It is important to respect the right to authorize, to protect the honor and dignity of the concerned persons.

This article discusses the management of image crises. There are three key stages in crisis management: crisis prevention; response to crisis situations; preparation the transition to the post-crisis regime and response to the crisis. The article present the actions that have made the negative impact of the crisis. It also looks at important actions that have contributed to a reduction of negative effects related to image crisis.

Specyfika kryzysów wizerunkowych w mediach społecznościowych

The paper aims to discuss image crises in social media. Referring to selected organizations it presents the importance and possible consequences of negative posts on social media. Based on literature review, own experience and case study analysis, it highlights differences between image crises in traditional and social media. Among other things, attention has been paid to the high level of spontaneity and responsiveness of social media users and the resulting high dynamics of social media crises.

Badanie mediów multimodalnych – multimodalne badanie mediów

Koncepcja polifonicznej powieści reportażowej Laboratorium Reportażu wobec teorii Michaiła Bachtina. Polityczny wymiar polifonii

The paper discusses the theoretical relations between Reportage Laboratory (RL) and the vision of polyphony by Mikhail Bakhtin. Although Reportage Laboratory has not yet produced work that could be labelled as polyphonic, it does not mean this is not possible. This paper argues that Marek Miller, RL creator and principle polyphony reportage novel theorist, is right when associating the RL in line with the thoughts of the Russian philosopher. According to Bakhtin the polyphonic novel has its political dimension, understood as a dialogue contraposed to all types of meta-narratives.

Koncentracja kapitału na polskim rynku prasowym. Studium przypadku

This article contains the characteristics of privatization processes in Wrocław’s regional newspaper „Słowo Polskie”. As a case study approach it presents typical transition from a government-owned enterprise, through commercial law company to a media corporation with foreign capital. Through the interviews conducted with the editors-in-chief and CEOs of publishing houses the study raises fundamental questions on the inevitability of media concentration processes and quality of the media. The author’s long cooperation with the newspaper, direct participation in the daily editorial work and transformation of publisher’s ownership, gives the added empirical value for the study.

Yet, the media and journalists are not resistant to unethical practices. These practices might be called the “dark side” of journalism. Society expects from journalists something more than just professional knowledge and technical efficiency. Media and journalists’ involvement in unethical practices, such as corruption, does not serve society.

The study draws on Roland Barthes’ media semiology originated in the book Mythologies. The paper aims at testing Barthes’ method in critical way critically; the goal is also to place it in the media science theory and to evaluate its usefulness for the further research.

The goal of this paper is to investigate different approaches to the definitions of multimedia, cross-media, transmedia, in the light of evolution of values and the development of digital and convergent cultures. The study proposes to define multimedia as ‘one story, one channel, many forms of content’, while – at the same time – сross-media and transmedia are being understood as ‘one story, many forms of content, many channels’ and ‘many stories, many forms of content, many channels, a single thematic universe, created with the active participation of readers (viewers)’ accordingly.

Polskie stacje radiowe w Wielkiej Brytanii w latach 2003–2016. Wstęp do badań

The focus here is on the Polish radio stations in Great Britain broadcast through the terrestrial DAB system and on the Internet between 2003 and 2016. They are presented according to the model developed by Harold Lasswell. The formulation of preliminary conclusions was facilitated by the survey interviews conducted by the author from 2009 to 2016 among 800 Poles living in London, Birmingham and Glasgow, who took part in the scientific conferences and lectures offered by the Polish University Abroad and in the literary events organized by the Association of Polish Writers Abroad.

Wpływ preferencji czytelników na rozwój francuskiego rynku współczesnej prasy codziennej

The character of the French market of the regional and national dailies is the result of concurrence of many factors. One of them are the preferences of readers, though the article pertains only to those readers that make the French newspaper market specific. The article presents traditions of reading in France and the diversity of the daily press market. An important fact for this system is understanding by the readers the role played by the daily press, which contributed to not existing there boulevard dailies. Also the regional press market is being shaped by the readers, since the best sold and read title is “Ouest-France”. The whole system is artificially supported and thus kept alive by the state by means of subsidies treated by the French as a sign of media pluralism.
