The article is dedicated to the media images of the Spanish Bourbon monarchy, especially the King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia, accompanied with an analysis of their role as (super) heroes or antiheroes of the nation. The author presents the problem of their standing in the public opinion in the face of participation of the royal family members in numerous political, sex and financial scandals, but also general crisis of the monarchy in Spain. Additional factors which make the King’s role of a superhero infeasible is a high level of contestation of the national idea in the society and augmenting secessionist tendencies, especially in Catalonia. In the atmosphere of probable disintegration of the Spanish state the monarch is unable to take substantial measures but remains obliged to make reference to them in his ceremonial public statements. The article is dedicated to the media images of the Spanish Bourbon monarchy, especially the King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia, accompanied with an analysis of their role as (super) heroes or antiheroes of the nation. This paper analyzes language policies in three journals published by members of the Bosniak diaspora in Germany and Austria. The goal of media in diaspora is usually to inform members of the community, but they also serve to build a sense of unity within the community or, in some cases, within more communities. They also promote certain social values, such as integration into the host country’s society and the preservation of their identity and connections with the country of origin (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The language policies implemented by these media are connected with these goals. Language policy is not only an explicit engagement in the routing of language development and its use, planning, making decisions and resolutions, but it can also be reflected in attitudes, beliefs and practices, or in language choices made by language users. This paper investigates the first issue of the Bulletin of the Islamic Cultural Center of Bosniaks in Berlin (Bilten Islamskog kulturnog centra Bošnjaka u Berlinu), the first issue of the Austrian magazine Oaza, and the first issue of the Pangea magazine, published in Germany. There are no explicit language programs or plans in these journals, but important attitudes and beliefs are noticed. Language is presented as a significant component of identity and culture and a vital connection with homeland and relatives. It is also indicated that multilingualism is a key resource and that the mothertongue of immigrants in Germany and Austria is not less worth than German. In terms of language choices, the following features have been explored: the choice of scripts, the yat substitution, nomination of the language, the functions performed by certain languages in the analyzed media, the presence of foreign-origin words and the choice of orthographic solutions. All of these magazines are written in the Latin alphabet and have an ijekavian yat substitution. In Pangea and Bulletin of the Islamic Cultural Center of Bosniaks in Berlin language is called Bosnian, but in Oaza a combined name Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or b/h/s is used. In these magazines, there are a few orthographic phenomena that could be considered as specific indicators of a particular language policy.

This paper deals with linguistic means that characterize women’s speech in a specific type of media discourse – confrontational television interview, their meanings and social implications. The aim of this research is to examine whether linguistic patterns of women’s language in media discourse comprise the basic features of women’s language and which ones, as well as to identify their functions and social implications. The methodological framework draws on Critical Discourse Analysis and the three-dimensional model which analyses the corpus as (1) text, (2) discursive practice, and (3) social practice. The research starts with the assumption that, if the relationship between discourse and society is dialectical, i.e. discourse constitutes society, and is itself influenced by society, changes in the former inevitably cause changes in the latter. Consequently, if women’s social position is reflected in their language, and vice versa, we assume that changes in the social position of women are also reflected in the language they use. Also, by generating changes in the discourse, women can improve their position in society. The results obtained from the analysis largely confirm the initial assumption.

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (hereafter TRRC) was set up to investigate and establish an impartial historical record of the atrocities and human rights violations committed during former President Yahya Jammeh’s ruling in The Gambia between July 1994 and January 2017. As more Gambians are gaining access to smartphones, most of them receive information on the TRRC’s activities and ongoing procedure through social media. Therefore, the TRRC may arguably be the most accessible truth commission in history, whilst at the same time it has been successful in remaining a Gambian-led process. This essay seeks to examine how social media is being used by the TRRC and the general public, for its outreach activities, its hearings and the promotion of non-reoccurrence of Jammeh’s events. The TRRC is arriving at the end of one of its two-year mandate and though there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that social media has influenced the activities of the TRRC, no thorough study has been conducted to explore the extent to which social media could influence the TRRC in its outreach missions, public engagements, its hearings and the decisions on who would be recommended for prosecutions or amnesties.

The online media brought a new trend not only in the form of an immediate response to emerging situations, but also offered a two-way response to emerging situations through discussions. The researched sources showed that content analysis is often based on qualitative analysis, which, however, can be a problem in the form of inefficiency and distortion of results. This situation can be reversed through quantitative keyword analysis through the collection of quantitative data. At the same time, the visualization of the collected data is important, thanks to which percipients can capture the data more efficiently and cleanly. The aim of the paper is to prepare a methodological procedure for creating the system and verify its functionality based on the theoretical basis and available methods for data collection and visualization. The contribution of the paper is precisely in the uniqueness of the system for visualization of keywords in a wide range of online media coverage.

The study is concerned with a new communication format, that is currently used more and more, in Slovakia. Podcasts are starting to be a regular part of broadcasting as well as communication of Slovak media. In this study, we have focused specifically on radios, narrowing our interest to private radios only. We used audience surveys to decide which radios to examine. We tried to address the radios, in Slovakia, with the highest number of listeners. In selected radio stations, we addressed people responsible for the development of new media and thus podcasts. In the form of semi-structured interviews, we found out how and for what purposes they use podcasts on their radio, how and when they started to produce podcasts and what is their strategy for producing or deploying podcasts in the future. We were also interested in the content structure of the podcasts, as well as the extent to which it corresponded to the broadcasting structure of the radio. The aim of this study is to point out the strategies used in creating podcasts on the most listened radio stations in Slovakia. We analyzed the obtained data, using methods such as comparison, generalization, induction, or deduction.

The groundswell is a phenomenon of the last decade. Since the emergence of social media, the power of consumers and potential customers has also been transformed thanks to digital development. It is important to monitor not only the activities in the offline environment, but also the activity of the online environment. Because it is the groundswell that can affect a business entity to some extent. One of the elements that is quantitatively measurable within the groundswell is sentiment. Each post in the discussion may have some sentiment. If we correctly analyze the given discussion within the sentiment, we can conclude by explaining how the groundswell reacts and whether the groundswell has a positive or negative effect on the business entity. It is also important for simple perception and data reading to visualize sentiment. The aim of the paper is to clarify the possibilities of data visualization and to analyze practical examples of tools for sentiment analysis and visualization. Thanks to the clarification, a closer examination of the groundswell will be possible.

This article aims to gain understanding of the use of the visual communication behind, or rather beside hoax messages spread around social media and internet. Misinformation circulating around our newsfeeds are often accompanied by pictures, some taken out of context, some manipulated by graphic software, but always with the same ambition as the written content that they escort, such as fearmongering, hate spreading or furthering various political intents. By interpretation of the pictorial content and its subsequent categorization, we can better understand the notion behind the less explored parts of a hoax message and gain more convenient position to push against misinformation. We will investigate the most shared hoaxes and what portion of them is accompanied by pictorial complements, increasing the potency of perceived misinformation. Further, by dividing those pictures into distinct categories, we can find different ways to unveil possible threat hidden behind picture or behind the whole hoax.

The study examines communication from the perspective of different approaches - psychology, sociology and the mass media. Although it may seem there is only one way of defining the communication at first glance and one point of view of which we look at it, this is not quite the case in science or in a practice. On the one hand, the authors of the study aim to identify different approaches of scientific disciplines to the study of the communication process. On the other hand, authors define common intersections of approaches of scientific disciplines to the communication practices. Based on a comparative analysis and an inductive procedure, it is possible to confirm the predicted premises about the specific approaches of individual scientific disciplines in relation to the study of the communication process. The objective of the study is to point out a relatively high degree of interdisciplinarity and common denominators in research of communication practices.

The paper sums up the results of piloting a tailor-made Critical Media Literacy (CML) course developed under Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module “European Media Standards and Values for Independent Journalism in the PostTruth Era” and taught to a group of 20 students enrolled for Journalism training program at Zaporizhzhia National University (Ukraine) in 2020-2021 academic year. With low CML level still a challenge for young democracies like Ukraine, the relevance of this study is further determined by an urgent demand for raising Journalism training programs quality. Grasping a scope of topics from fact-checking techniques to conflictsensitive writing, the course combined innovative methodologies (peer-to-peer learning, project-based learning, learning-by-doing) with flexible, cross-discursive module structure thus enabling a multi-focal approach to the topic and ensuring a more comprehensive, holistic vision of CML not only as a set of skills but as a valuecharged practice deeply incorporated into journalism ethics and standards.

Using image communication on the web has become a part of everyday life. Voice communication in conjunction with image communication has become more authentic. The image in communication makes the subject’s presence felt. The image of the respondents enhances their communicative mutuality and can to some extent serve as a substitute for a meeting in real life. But what is the difference between real communication and audio-visual communication? To what extent is the quality of visual means of expression useful in web communication and when does that quality disrupt that communication or even have considerable negative impact on the perception of sound? Our study focuses on image artefacts that influence communication in front of the webcam. We will examine the compositional visual elements characteristic of this visual depiction, the technical aspects for communication cameras. We will attempt to give recommendations based on technical arguments not only for users of web communication, but also for developers and designers of camera technology for this type of communication. For our study we have analysed more than 250 self-depictions of respondents.

Informational websites make a perfect example of new electronic media. They are very vulnerable to external factors and to changes in writing style over time, which stems from the dynamics of expression and their general accessibility. As a result, the texts which appear on such websites are varied, depending on the time of their publication. They also deviate from standards and strict rules followed in traditional media. All these characteristics are reflected in reviews and articles published on Filmawka, a website created in mid-2018. During this short time, Filmawka has achieved an important position in the Polish Internet world and can certainly be identified as part of the mainstream media. This article presents the key characteristics of new electronic media on the example of websites and examines changes in language and its features observed in reviews and articles published on Filmawka.
