The sail has an important place in Russian literature from the XIX and XX centuries, being a literary image, a symbol, a bearer of the author’s message. In the article I have written is being analyzed its history – from its first arrival (1828) in Bestuzhev (Marlinsky)’s poem “Andrey, Knyaz of Pereyaslvl”, followed by Lermontov’s “The Sail”, Bunin’s “Song” (“Pesnya”), Grin’s “Scarlet Sails”, V. Kataev’s “A White Sail Gleams” to the famous “Brigantine”, written by Pavel Kogan. Connected to the water and the air, the sail absorbs the essence of the elements. In this way, it becomes a verbal center for the fictional world of freedom, an illustration of the dream, an expression of yearning for the unfulfillable.

The book "More Afer More. Essays Commemorating the Five-Hundredth Anniversary of Thomas More’s Utopia" is the first volume of Facta Ficta Research Centre’s in Kraków series "Frontiers of Nowhere", published in co-operation with Villa Decius Association as a part of the world-wide research initiative Utopia 500 to celebrate five hundred years since the publication of sir Thomas More’s De Optimo Reipublicæ Statu Deque Nova Insula Utopia Libellus Vere Aureus, Nec Minus Salutaris Quam Festivus in 1516. From the introduction by Gregory Claeys: The twenty-six essays which compose this collection cover a substantial range of both historical and theoretical themes, indicating at the least that the utopian idea thrives today across a number of disciplines as well as in domains (like computer games) which are themselves of recent origin and which indicate that utopia can also be addressed as an aspect of the internal psychic fantasy world. There is some consideration here of the lengthy and complex historical relationship between utopian ideals and religion. There is some effort to reconsider practical efforts to found actual communities which embody utopian ideals. Several authors revisit the emotional substrata of utopian aspiration rendered accessible through music in particular. Literature is here nonetheless the chief focus, in keeping with the form of Thomas More’s original text and that of the tradition which has imitated and satirised it. The themes represented here mirror in literary form the dystopian dri in the external world discussed above. Many of the leading authors of post-totalitarian dystopian fiction are included here, notably (to name but a few) Margaret Atwood, James Graham Ballard, Robert A. Heinlein, David Foster Wallace and, most recently, Michel Houellebecq. Within these treatments, the possibilities are explored that dystopia may emerge from or assume the form of racist regimes, environmental destruction, corporate dictatorship, or religious fundamentalism, or some combination of these factors. Such poten-tial outcomes of modernity need, the authors of this volume also assure us, to be balanced against the utopian promise which bodily remodelling entertains, and the possibility of longevity which scientific and technical advances enca-psulate as the epitome of modern individualist utopianism.

This monograph analyzes and discusses usage o f some traditional motives in Serbian science-fiction literature in relation to socio-cultural milieu since 1970’s until today. The object of analysis covers the works in genre literature published since late 1970’s up to the present. The sources included so-called specialized journals from the given period as well as certain number o f novels published since the late 1980’s until present. The first part o f the analysis covers the whole area o f the former Yugoslavia, especially the published works from 1970’s and 1980’s. However, the focus is on the literary production originated in Serbia since m id 1980’s until the present. The sociocultural milieu o f this period appears as especially interesting: the period is characterized by a process of tradition revival, the usage o f certain traditional elements outside their context, to target various aims. M y primary goal is to analyze a certain genre o f literary production which carries particular pop-culture contents and to determine the potential influences o f the process o f tradition revival. In addition, I will point out to how such literature constitutes a reality per se. By taking into account the literature production until the present, I will point out to not only the usage o f certain traditional motives but also their transformation and modification in regards to the societal reality in which they originated. That is, this particular approach will allow us to determine ways and means used by a culture to represent itself both to the insiders and outsiders.

Bettina von Arnim: "O Polsce"

The second volume in the series Niemiecka Literatura Kobiet [German Women’s Literature] initiated by the Institute of German Philology of the Silesian University furnishes the Polonohile essay entitled “Polenbroschüre” [“O Polsce”; “An essay on Poland”] by a famous German woman writer of the Romantic period Bettina von Arnim – translated for the first time into Polish. The text which was originally published in 1849 continues to amaze the reader with its topicality, constituting at the same time an example of a German (and woman’s) voice (which was heard relatively rare in the history of German literature) which advocated the pursuit of freedom and the rights of the Polish people in such a passionate, uncompromising and committed way. Moreover, the publication contains essays devoted to the life and the literary output of Bettina von Arnim, the political problems discussed in the “Broszura o Polsce”, selected problems of translation and a comprehensive bibliography. The book “O Polsce” is intended primarily for people who are interested in the history of German literature, especially woman’s literature, the history of Polish-German relations and the problems of literary translation.

Interkulturni (kon)tekst bosanskohercegovačke interliterarne zajednice

The interculturality advocated by philosophers from ancient civilizations is gaining even more importance nowadays, because the deletion of borders and striving for global unification require the strengthening of cultural communities and their interaction with others. The cultural communities that went through the unification phase in their past and then the disunion, those that converted from large multicultural communities into less intercultural and interliterary communities are South Slavic literatures. The intercultural study of the South Slavic interdisciplinary community has its foundations in Slovak literary historiography where the concept of intercultural study is offered and elaborated by the Slovak comparativist Dionyz Ďurišin. Looking up to the German cultural and literary practice, Ďurišin introduced the terms intercultural and interliterary in the literary theory and elaborated the interliterary communities, pointing out that one of the forms of literary-historical synthesis of general creations such as the interliterary communities is the study of their individual components under the conditions of their reciprocity. In the central South Slavic interliterary community (especially in Bosnian and Croatian literatures), looking up to some aspects of German and Slovak literature, Zvonko Kovac supports such an approach and emphasizes – Kovac believes that this cultural dialogue, or literary production, has taken place more and more in internationally-dependent societies – in specific interliterary communities – through a specific interliterary process. In this regard, we come up to two possible directions in the diachronic and synchronic study of literature. The first direction leads us to national concepts in which culture (including literature and other arts) closes into its own circle, not allowing to expand and enrich. Contrary to it, the second direction allows interaction that liberates culture and makes it accessible. The first concept in the practice until now has left cultures poor, while the other has been directed towards enrichment and spreading of ideas and cultural values. This book aims at pointing to the common past, which still gives writers the right to opt for double affiliation and even multiple affiliation to certain cultures within the community, especially in Bosnian culture and literature (on the example of writers such as Mesa Selimovic, Ivo Andric, Branko Copic, Skender Kulenovic, Mirko Kovac and Irfan Horozovic).

O miejscach, pamięci i śmierci w Balladach i romansach

The article deals with the mythization of the geographical space of the Nowogródek region in Adam Mickiewicz’s Ballads and Romances. Krzysztof Trybuś introduces into his analysis and interpretation of Mickiewicz’s ballad series the category of memory as being equivalent to imagination, thus pointing to the analogy in William Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads. In his analysis, Trybuś takes into account both the rhetorical tradition of memory (ars) and the epistemological one (vis). He uses the notion of roman- tic memory with the cultural studies reflections of Aleida and Jan Assmann. Writing about places of memory in Mickiewicz’s ballad series, the author of the article also distinguishes kairotic places, marked by catastrophe. Trybuś links the historical context of Lithuania during the Napoleonic wars with the issue of death, which is heavily accentuated in Bal- lads and Romances. In the conclusion, he refers polemically to Maria Żmigrodzka’s well- -established thesis of two faces of early Romanticism in Poland. In doing so, he points out the similarity between Mickiewicz’s ballad cycle and Antoni Malczewski’s Maria in the preferential treatment of the theme of death.
