Although lacking elements of the poetics of drama, Magdalena Tulli’s prose draws extensively from the traditional Medieval morality play. The key figure here is allegory, which is often used in accordance with the convention of the morality play. This connection is referred to by the author of the following essay as the modality of the morality play, assuming the understanding of the category of modality after Włodzimierz Bolecki. In Tulli’s prose it manifests itself in that the plot is set beyond historic time and usually beyond specified space; the boundaries of the world are ultimately set by the distances between actors and props. Tulli’s writing refers the reader to universal issues present nunc et semper. She readily uses the concept of en ronde scene as a sole place of action (for instance the municipal square in “Skaza”). Before the eyes of a viewer – reader, she develops a plot told by allegoric characters; she does not give up moralizing but avoids exaggerated didacticism. The morality mode in Tulli’s writing is realized through the philosophical thesis of constantly emphasized inevitability of wander from birth to death.

The present work is devoted to the problem of reception of the Sicilian literature in the Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s oeuvre. The article is an analysis of the Herling-Grudziński’s essay on “The Leopard” published in 1959 in “Kultura”. Herling in his work analyzes the crucial problem of the sicilianity (sicilianità) and the obsession with death. In the “Journal Written at Night” and in the essay about Lampedusa Grudziński “rewrites” the vision of Sicily and diagnoses the problem of insularity (insularità).

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean, whose population approximates to that of Warsaw. Since its discovery, the island was ruled by several governments: Dutch, French, and English, before it finally became independent in 1968. On this piece of land of about 2,000 m2 live direct descendants of the inhabitants of three continents: Europe, Africa and Asia. The history of the island and the Mauritian people create its specificity. Undoubtedly, the fact that Mauritius is an island largely influences the Mauritian society. In my article, I will study how this impacts on the society, including its writers. I will seek to define the nature of their relationships. I will try to describe the various representations of the island in Franco-Mauritian literary fiction at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since this topos is in dichotomy of good and evil, I will consider the island as a synonym of a half-paradise and a half-prison. Subsequently, I will analyse it as a character of its own. Finally, I will argue that Mauritius can be seen as a reflection of the world, a miniature model. In summary, after examining the various images of Mauritius, I will try to demonstrate its special status in the Mauritian society, especially in literature.

The article deals with a number of important factors: author – publisher – reader – translator, etc., which determine the state and peculiarities of the entry of modern post-colonial Ukrainian literature into the global processes of cultural dialogue. It has been noted that the rapprochement and mutual enrichment of different cultures will be productive only when it is based on mutual interest, on the acceptance of another culture, that is, on conscious mutual enrichment. A number of problems that complicate the entry of post- totalitarian literature into the global cultural environment is also identifi ed. Thus, for example, it is emphasized that such a relevant issue for national European literatures in a globalized world as the preservation of identity is much more difficult for post-colonial literature, in which the processes of overcoming the complexes imposed by the colonizer, demythologizing stereotypes, as well as finding and affirming one’s own identity are taking place.

The article analyses two trends in the discourse of illness and death present in the Ukrainian popular novel "Anemona’s Villa" by Halyna Petrosaniak (2021). The first trend medicalizes illness and death and is associated with practices of marginalization and exclusion of terminally ill people, while the second one postulates humanistic ideas resulting from the assumptions of the hospice movement and palliative care, putting emphasis on the importance of co-presence with a dying person and their right not to isolate themselves from society.

Certain literary scholars prefer the term “totalitarian structures” to more precisely describe the structures in Thomas Mann’s novella “The Law.” The application of this term in literary theory highlights the connection between the novella and the events of the time it was written, as well as the recognition of fascist and Nazi methods. Crafted in America in 1943 during Mann’s exile since 1938, the novella was compared to the German totalitarian regime, and Mann’s methods were closely tied to the rampant war events of the time. This paper explores whether the controversial terms “totalitarian structures” and “totalitarian humanity” are appropriate for a meaningful understanding of Thomas Mann’s novella “The Law.” Additionally, these terms are related to the concept of humanity that Mann formulated after Hitler’s rise to power. This paper also examines Mann’s essays that address democracy and its threats by the emergence of fascist regimes in Europe. The paper also explores relevant literary criticism studies that engage with the novella “The Law.” The main aim is to analyze the political essays of that time and compare Thomas Mann’s essays and his novella “The Law.” These analyses aim to provide a deeper understanding of his worldview and the idea of humanity of that time. To gain a deeper insight into Mann’s intentions during his work on the novella, the paper will also explore his understanding of the concepts of democracy, spirit, and freedom.

Using the methods of statistical and content analysis, the article characterizes the development of ancient images in the poems published by the journal Notes of the Fatherland (Otechestvennye zapiski) under the editorship of N. A. Nekrasov. The novelty and relevance of the study are due to a complete and systematic description of the role and place of ancient images in the poems that were published in this social and publicistic journal during the period of activity of one particular editor. Poetic works constituted a relatively small part of the journal’s publications, but had a significant influence on the development of its program. Antique images are present in both original and translated poems, mainly of a satirical nature, which corresponds to its range of themes and subjects. With the help of ancient images, the authors paint a picture of reality, responding to the most significant social problems. This functioning of ancient images continues the traditions of the satire of classicism. However, ancient images also appear in poems with philosophical, historical and cultural reflections or descriptions of the fullness and joy of human life, originating in the Anacreontic tradition.

Vesna Parun’s poetry collection Vjetar Trakije was published in 1964. It is related to the Bulgarian part of Parun’s civil and creative biography. It abounds in longer poems and miniatures united by Parun’s poetics of Mediterraneanism and neosymbolism. As one of the stylistic markers of poetic speech in the poems’ formation, we singled out the imaginative reflection that shapes parts, and sometimes entire poems. It is one of the points of poetic discourse, i.e. its content and style. In this paper, we will analyze reflection as an expression that is not as such represented in traditional theories of literature, but is derived from philosophy (Cassirer) and individual literary theoretical analyses (Freidenberg, Stamać). Its imaginative performance rests on pictorial syntax and semantics, and its meaning is based on the mental presentation of the subject world in the poem. We divide it by subject fields and content, and analyze it using literary stylistic procedures.

The sources that talk about the life and creativity of the scribecalligraphers of Azerbaijan, who lived and created in the Middle Ages, are of great importance. Tazkiras have a special place among these sources. In addition to giving information about the life and creativity of the individual persons – poets, writers, saints, murshids, scientists, various artists, etc., according to their themes, the tazkiras are also the carriers of precious information and facts about the historical, social-political, economic, religious-ideological conditions, the science, literature and culture of the relevant period. Tazkiras are the embryos of the textual studies. One of the tazkiras, which talks about the life and creativity of the scribes and calligraphers who lived and created in the Eastern world, including the historical territory of Azerbaijan, is "The Book of the Examination of Scholars" by the 19th -century Iranian author Mirza Sanglakh. This work is mainly known as "Tazkiratul-khattatin" – "The tazkira about the calligraphers".
