This article discusses the work and organization of the archival reading room in renovated building of National archive of Styria in Graz. Reading room is furnished and decorated according to modern archival principles and the principles of a standard program for the organization of the archival reading room. Thanks to this arrangement and organization of the reading room users have fast and easy access to the archival material, good treatment and full protection of the archival material.

The Rosenberg Book, a unique source of the Bohemian land law written in the 14th century, lacked until now a full and comprehensive catalogue of all the extant manuscript copies. As the paper contains a physical and codicological description of 10 of the known 40 manuscripts of the Rosenberg Book, it presents to the readers the first part of the catalogue. In the introduction to the paper the catalogue is supplemented with basic information about the existing records of the Rosenberg Book manuscripts, brief characteristics of its manuscript tradition, and the guidelines for the manuscript description itself.

The catalogue was prepared within the framework of the research project “Court Books of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL): Digitization and Database” realized by Vilnius University Library in 201122014 (VUL, No. LIT–5–19). The paper deals with the previously unexplored Trakai Castle Court Acts of 1660–1661 (F7–MDGs, 1660–1661) from the VUL collection. It presents Part V of the critical catalogue of the manuscripts written in Polish and Old Byelorussian (Ruthenian) languages, also providing short descriptions of documents Nos. 775–822 (pp. 827–877). These documents are important for the research of Lithuanian, Polish and Byelorussian history. Information accumulated in them reflects a broad political, social and cultural panorama of the multilingual GDL society. It enables us to consider them as unique reference books that represent the changing sociolinguistic situation of the GDL.

Ottoman and European relations were not constructed only on wars. It is obvious that there are also cultural relations between the two civilizations. It is natural for the long lasting sovereignty of the Ottoman to create some studies in the West to understand the Ottomans. Hundreds of books written in Turkish are available in many European countries as a consequence of the attempt to understand the Ottomans. Switzerland is one of the countries with an extensive amount of Turkish manuscripts. Turkish, Arabic and Persian manuscripts brought from the Ottoman cultural geography are available in the libraries of Switzerland today. A catalogue was created in 2008 with the name “Arabische, türkische und persische Handschriften” about the handwritings in Zurich Library. However, a catalogue about the manuscripts in Basel University Library has not been created yet. The study aims at least informing the researchers who are interested in studying relevant topics in Turkey, about the manuscripts included in this catalogue.

THE SURVEY OF THE FUNCTIONING OF THE COMPUTER CATALOGUE OF THE JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES COLLECTIONS

This article presents the results of the survey of the functioning of the Computer Catalogue of the JU Libraries Collections, conducted in February 2014 among the users of the catalogue. The survey was anonymous and available online directly from the website of the Computer Catalogue of the JU Libraries Collections. It covered the website of the Computer Catalogue of the JU Libraries Collections, individual functions of the catalogue, as well as the information and instructions for the readers available on the website of the Jagiellonian Library and pertaining the Computer Catalogue of the JU Libraries Collections. It also included the evaluation of the competence and friendliness of the staff of the Library, mainly the Catalogue staff. The survey resulted in calculating the rate of user satisfaction regarding the Computer Catalogue of the JU Libraries Collections as a whole, as well as its individual functions. Thanks to the statistical tool for the frequency of service utilization, it also revealed preferences of the users regarding the choice of individual services.

This article deals with the issues of introducing web resources into subject literary bibliographies. This issue is at first analyzed on the general level as the methodological challenge of online sources systematic introduction into the context of managing current bibliography and then case studies follow targeted on specific problems of internet material bibliography treatment. Firstly one discusses the issues related to bibliographical processing of online documents (web pages, online journals, etc.), which are in complex and variable relations to those available in print. An attention is paid to the methodological issues, in particular providing criteria of web resources selection. The need for archivization of bibliographically processed materials which we assess as the crucial element of any systematic bibliographical processing of Internet materials will be also highlighted. In the following part study presents the preliminarily classification of the new specific genres of internet content: blogs and literary forums. Firstly the Polish literary blogosphere is analysed and preliminarily typology of this document type is introduced. Later a phenomenon of literary forums is taken into consideration. Based on an example of poetry forum Nieszuflada.pl more detailed quantitative analysis of this resource type is given and issues of authorship attribution in the digital environment are discussed.

The notes on books represent an important aspect in the study of the old Romanian books. They are so important because they usually contain information that cannot be found elsewhere. Such is the case of the notes on the book prices and their owners. There are 180 notes on books in the CRV fund of the Romanian Academy Library in Cluj-Napoca. The information contained by such notes reflect the value and the importance of the book for its owner and that time. A brief survey of the notes reveals that the old Romanian books represented since their printing and until nowadays important cultural and material treasures.

Autografy królowych Polski - próba katalogu

The article deals with the way of signing Polish queens and how it has changed over the years, starting with the first registered signature belonging to Zofia Holszańska, wife of Władysław Jagiełło, and ending with Maria Josepha of Austria, wife of August III. The number of surviving autographs is a function of the size of the queen’s handwritten legacy. This, in turn, primarily results from the length of the „reign” of a given ruler on the Polish throne. Women who were Polish queens for a short time left very few autographs or no autographs could be found at all. On the basis of the collected material, it was possible to draw the first conclusions about the topic.

Optimizarea regăsirii informaţiilor prin modelarea matematică

Information Retrieval Systems are software that save and carry out the management of the information contained in documents. Any Information Retrieval System is based on a mathematical model. The main mathematical models on which the Information Retrieval Systems are based on are: the Boolean model, the Vector Space model, the probabilistic model and the linguistic model. In addition to these classical models, in the recent years there have been added the models based on clustering methods, Latent Semantic Indexing and Support Vector Machines. The present article describes the principles underlying these models, the advantages and disadvantages for each model, with a view to clarify the role these models play or may play in the information retrieval process..

Câteva elemente de utilizare a CZU pentru cartea veche şi rară

The cataloging of old and rare books is one of the top activities in a library. This action demands solid librarianship knowledge, as well as good knowledge of the history of books and printing, abilities to decipher and interpret notes, paleography, notions of conservation and also probity and judgement. Therefore, it takes time to shape a specialized librarian. The activity of such a librarian is somehow similar to scientific research.This activity requires much attention and accuracy, the description must give as many details as possible, so there is also a list of useful tools which a librarian can and should use when cataloging old or rare books.

Tentative de diversificare şi modernizare a serviciilor oferite de colecţiile speciale ale bibliotecii

It is well-known that after 1989, libraries have changed their politics concerning the access to special collections - ancient books, manuscripts, maps, images etc. - that became easier to search and study. This could be possible first, because of the attempts of promoting the ancient values, and second, because of the changes that took place in the educational and scientific fields (the growing number of researchers, historians, writers, students etc., whose interest in research and scientific writing has lately increased). According to this bases, there are some directions that might be identified: a) finding of supplementary means of enriching the collections and communicate them to the readers, because it is well known that the quality of information offered to the public depends on the librarian’ s knowledge about the collection he is working with. We must also consider up to date electronic possibilities, that enable us to create digital library (data bases containing digitized documents, images etc.); b) making the most of local patrimony, that requests, first of all, the creation of a data base, containing all the information we may collect about our county: books, articles, maps, images, correspondence, official papers etc.; c) the involving of the readers, that must be determined to come to library and like it; and that requests the laying out of a special place for talking and making the best of our time.

Aspecte metodologice privind procesele de catalogare şi descriere bibliografică a documentelor

Cataloguing is a specific branch of the bibliographical processing documents, that establishes the rules of creating the necessary instruments for finding the documents in a library collection. The use of collocation „management of organizing library’s collection” is due to the complexity of cataloguing - that refers to following of some rigorous rules and it is based on strictly description rules, established both on national and international level. According to effectual standards, each recording is made of three distinctive elements: 1. the properly bibliographical description - that includes the particular elements of each document; 2. the establishing of those specified elements that will be the main entrances: headings for alphabetic catalogues and classification index; 3. topographic quota, that will indicate the place of documents in library’ depository. Thus, one of the most important jobs a librarian that works on processing documents must do refers to the bibliographical description. We have to clarify a very important aspect from the very beginning: there is no synonymy between the two terms: cataloguing and bibliographical description; it is more like subordinate relation, because each bibliographical description is part of a catalographic registration. Cataloguing registrations are more complex, more extensive as compared bibliographical description and they include some supplementary elements, such as: main and secondary headings, books quota and classification index; each element may be used as a criteria for searching and for the bibliographical card organization. The main headings thus become entrance elements for the systematicalphabetic catalogue and also for the intern catalogue, while classification index is used for an easier searching for books, according to their content. But it is obvious that the use of on-line catalogues makes easier the searching, according to many criteria. Each record of a document contains the following documents: a. heading; b. description; c. access elements; d. codification elements. Cataloguing is only a small part of the process that takes place in a library, more precisely at the cataloguing department. But this domain is so vast, that could hardly be comprised in just one study; in fact, we might consider each stage of the cataloguing process may be the subject for an independent study. Our analysis was not intended to identify each methodological stage of cataloguing; our intention was to present some delicate aspects of this process and we have emphased some of them: • bibliographical description of current monographies; • description in automation system. The examples offered by this study have proved that the management of organizing collections, that also includes cataloguing and bibliographical description, is a complex process that must be treated with responsability, because by a proper administration of the documents recently bought by the library, librarians concure to a higher quality of services.

Contribuţii la implementarea tehnicilor moderne de catalogare şi indexare Paşi prin bibliosferă cu dr. Constanţa Dumitrăşconiu

Many specialists in Romanian bibliotheconomy have strived in time to adjust to developing tendencies in information and documentation sciences, keeping up with all news in these fields, both in the national and international area. Constanța Dumitrășconiu worked in the cataloging department of the Central University Library „Carol I” in Bucharest and she made clear her points of view as well as she designed the methodology necessatry to implement, in all Romanian libraries, new and uniform techniques. She also believes that what we need is a new approach in the activity of the librarians in the cataloging departments. Constanța Dumitrășconiu permanently states that it is compulsory a continuous training of this professional category since we are facing a digital revolution which determines significant changes in information and comuunication techniques, this including the public and university libraries, thus affecting the professional future of the cataloging librarians as well as the online catalogues.

Středověká rukopisná knihovna řeholních kanovníků sv. Augustina v Praze na Karlově

The article deals with the medieval manuscript library of the former house of the Canons Regular of St Augustine in Prague-Karlov. The text presents extant sources: apart from the manuscripts themselves, some of which contain ownership and donation records, there is in particular a medieval list of Karlov manuscripts, made by the abbot Procopius in 1380, and a record of the donation of a large number of codices given to the library by Jan, the parish priest of Dobešov and Černovice, in 1395. The article further analyses them and describes the history of this library on their basis. The core of the study is a description of the surviving part of the library, from which twenty-five manuscripts have been identified. It summarises the physical characteristics of the codices, their dating, provenance, and language classification. Most attention is given to a detailed thematic categorization of the library’s contents.

Byzantine seals in the Tunay Demran Collection

The Collection of Tunay Demran, officially registered in the Manisa Archaeological Museum, contains seven seals, six of lead and one of silver, and one blank. Manisa, the Byzantine Magnesia Anelios on Mount Sipylos, with its fertile lowland and strategic location in Western Anatolia, has been home to different civilizations over the centuries, including the Lydian Kingdom, one of the most important ancient civilizations. In the 13th century, it became one of the more important cities of the Nicene Empire (established after the Latin invasion in 1204) and the seat of Ioannes III Doukas Vatatzes, who located an actively working mint there. Later on, the city and its environs came under the rule of the Beylik of Saruhan and the Ottoman Empire. There is a rich archaeological record of civil and religious architecture in Manisa and its surroundings, still awaiting full investigation. The article presents Demran’s collection of seals and explores potential ties with the archaeological remains of historical Magnesia.

The Ukrainian Kyrylytsia, Restored: An Automation Project for Adding the Cyrillic Fields to Ukrainian Records in OCLC WorldCat

This report from the field concerns a collaborative project which resulted in successfully adding the Cyrillic fields to about 30,000 Ukrainian bibliographic records in OCLC WorldCat, the world’s largest online catalogue. Historically, the Ukrainian records in English-speaking libraries were only provided in transliteration according to the Library of Congress Romanization Table. However, the current standards also require the original script, such as the Ukrainian Kyrylytsia. While automating the Cyrillicization of Ukrainian legacy records is theoretically straightforward, in practice it faced more than one challenge, from poor quality of transliteration to the historical changes in Ukrainian orthography. The report presents the OCLC Ukrainian Cyrillicization project and discusses the steps in its implementation as an example of a successful collaboration in the areas of bibliographic automation, Ukrainian philology and culture, Slavic cataloguing, and linguistics.

Biblioteki w dobie pandemii. Przyczynek do badań

This article is an attempt to reflect on the impact of the pandemic on the functioning of modern libraries, their accessibility to the reader, and the relationship between both the traditional and digital spaces in which public institutions operate. The lockdown time has shown how big is the influence of the network and technology on the world of libraries in the era of new challenges. The pandemic has changed the existing rules of using many of their functionalities. First of all, it deprived the opportunity to feel the atmosphere and aura characteristic for these institutions. It has caused many initiatives to be transferred to the Internet. Users do not have so many opportunities to stop and reflect in interestingly arranged and designed interiors. The librarians overnight faced a real challenge, which was to ensure constant contact with readers. Nowadays the question of their future and shape remains opened.
