Assessment of New Terms in the Komi Language

The process of creating of new terms has been going on for the last 15—20 years. It is important that we note that during this process terms were also created for use in school education, which plays a significant role in terms of language development. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that the process should be systematic and respond to the language rules and needs of the audience. The attitude of society to the new terms is significant too. The current article presents an analysis of the results of a sociolinguistic study which was organized at the end of 2014 and dedicated to the assessment of new terms including the school terminological vocabularies published in 2011.

MODERNIZATION AND LINGUSTIC CULTURAL POLICY IN MODERN POLYETHNIC SOCIETY

Our paper focuses on the modernization approach to the relationship and mutual influence of language behavior and language planning in the multi-ethnic society. This relationship is shown as the basic model for the analysis of linguistic situation in the Mari Republic (Russian Federation). Language planning is an important factor in creating favorable conditions for the socialization of small nations into the large society. Language planning is also the factor of regulating ethno-cultural, ethno-national processes in modern multi-ethnic society. Social context allows the authors to analyze this influence in the realization of characteristics of individuals and nations. The relationship of language behavior and language planning is suggested to be the main key factor of national security of the community.

Angielskie dublety leksykalne w polskiej prasie kobiecej – kilka uwag o ocenie innowacji językowych

Article attempts to assess lexical doublets occurring in Polish contemporary feminine press, through the prism of criteria of evaluation of linguistic innovations (criterion of sufficiency language, economy language and aesthetic). Analysis of these anglicisms allowed the statement that the majority of doublets is unnecessary vocabulary in Polish lexical resource. Expansive Americanization of Polish culture and Polish language, however, contribute to the increasing frequency of these doublets in press, though, given their frequent lack of clarity of meaning and communication disturbances, which are the cause, it is clear that the use of this type of language elements should be substantially limited.

We made a selection of language material varying in complexity from collocations to proverbs and, for the most part, the application is made on examples taken from Iuliu Zanne’s Proberbele românilor, but includes alsophrases recorded in other famous lexicographic works.

In the large sphere the speech analysis supposes nowadays and, particularly, the argumentation analysis, considered a branch of the former, the stereotype, together with the topoϊ or the commonplaces, is analyzed as one of the forms of the doxa. This perspective, we adopt in the study, corresponds to the integrative tendency of speech analysis, proposed by Ruth Amossy. This ensemble of beliefs, opinions and representations specific to a community, play in nowadays occasional religious speech, as a coded discursive genre, distinct from other preaching forms, an important part, tracing new perspectives of research both regarding the way the speech architecture is supported, starting from the previous agreement, and concerning how this built doxasticspace reveals what we are going to define in our study as interdiscursive dialogism. The application part of the study will have as a source of analysis the corpus of pareneses which I gathered, transcribed compliant to the conventions, from an audio-video format, published in Luminiţa Hoarţă Cărăuşu, Corpus de limbă română vorbită actuală nedialectală, „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University Publishing House of Iaşi, Iaşi, 2013, p. 60-99.

L’image de marque d’un pays: la Roumanie en tant que destination touristique

The topic of tourism motivations has been debated for decades in various destinations around the world. Romanian’s economy is booming starting with end of 2013 as stated by one of the most powerful voices on the subject – “The Economist”. Furthermore, Bucharest is acknowledged as the cultural, industrial and financial center of Romania. Bucharest is becoming lately more and more popular city destinations in Europe, being also known as a budget friendly destination. People are influenced by many factors in choosing their destination. Country-branding is maintained on a top position when it comes to decision’s influences. The main objective of this paper is to identify the main motivational factors that attract tourists to visit the Romanian capital. The research will look on how the Romanian brand is perceived by foreigners, at how people get information about Bucharest before they travel, how their experience in Bucharest is and which possibility would be to recommend the Romanian capital to others, as a tourist destination.

Quelques réflexions sur des pratiques croisées entre la formation linguistique et l’enseignement disciplinaire au sein des filières francophones dans le contexte de la mondialisation

L’article a pour but de présenter quelques réflexions sur les approches croisées qu’on peut adopter, d’une part, pour le développement et la consolidation des compétenceslangagières des étudiants et, d’autre part, pour l’enseignement des disciplines nonlinguistiquesen français au sein des filières francophones dans le contexte de la mondialisation. Ces réflexions émergent de notre connaissance du domaine à la foisthéorique et pratique dans la mise en place d’enseignements et de formations axés sur le français sur objectifs spécifiques et le français sur objectif universitaire. Le travail fait de la lumière sur le nouveau rôle du professeur de langue, au sein desdites filières, qui est amenédans sa démarche, d’un côté, à surmonter un certain nombre de difficultés linguistiques etsociolinguistiques des apprenants, d’un autre côté, à aider ces derniers à réussir le passageau standard d’enseignement à la française, à faire en sorte qu’ils s’approprient cettenouvelle approche. Cela suppose des liens réguliers entre les enseignants de français et lesenseignants des disciplines de spécialité pour la mise en place d’un dispositif d’aide à lacompréhension des cours universitaires par la création des binômes « enseignant de langue- enseignant de spécialité ».

On the one hand, this article aims at describing the feminine construct appearing in advertisements published in Romanian magazines as compared to the one presented by French magazines previously examined by the author.On the other hand, the author is interested in finding out if these magazines show women in a stereotype and sexist manner.The analysis focuses on the type of product advertised, the advertising image and text, as well as the type of speech contract, subjective terms and the “ethos” (stereotyped construct) resulting from the advertisements.

Femei în arhitectură

From the beginning of history, women played an important role in architecture: at first, they ruled over the interior space of the family house, organizing the space, protecting and embellishing it -even today, they assume this role. Women started acting as professionals in architecture only recently, starting the 19thcentury –access to architecture schools was very difficult, acquiring the diploma and then finding work was not easy –women had to fight every step of the way. We present some women architects and designers and their stories of struggle and success. We discuss some of the realities of the profession, the position women architects have, the ways in which they present themselves and organize in order to protect their interests. Women have an ever growing presence in the profession, their role is getting more recognition; they orient towards people and communities, their innovative spirit is breaking new ground, they are open to cross-disciplinary collaborations. We encourage young girls to embrace this profession –there is a lot to do and create, they will never get bored... We encourage the beneficiaries to choose women architects –their needs will be better understood and met with specific solutions

The Lonely World of Virtual Love: Masculinity between Self-eradication and Neo-Validation in Late-modern Japan

Based on a four-year empiric-phenomenological fieldwork in the slippery domain of virtual interactions as well as in-depth literature research on new media, masculinity studies and entertainment industry with specific focus on Japan, this paper aims at clarifying some of the major –and to a certain extent, central –themes recurrent in the, at times obsessive, radicalized consumption of virtual leisure practices among (Japanese) men: particularly online dating, video games and digital pornography seem to have slowly, steadily, quietly conquered the cyber-space –notably large segments of the male population. Previous academic research on the digital space and its relation to masculinity,particularly the seminal studies of Azuma Hiroki (2000, 2001) and Morikawa Aiichirō(2008), deal mostly with the otaku (“nerd”) phenomenon classically linked to the cyber-industry and digital culture. The current paper analyzes the two additional paradigms of masculinity in Japan framing the otaku social appearance –the salaryman (“corporate samurai”) and the “herbivore men” –in historical-comparative perspective while highlighting the complex gender dynamics in late-modern Japan, in the dialectical interplay of power, (cultural) consumption and state-driven reproduction politics, and suggests some possible measures towards a more social-friendly future of the digital universe and of the challenges masculinity is facing currently, in a global perspective.

The scales have been somewhat adjusted with the publication in 1992 of the first volume of Adio, Europa!, which created quite a stir in the Romanian literary world. The present paper focuses on the main character of the novel, Candid Desiderius, who is an alter ego of the author himself. The question raised by the paper is how representative such a personality is of the Romanian intellectual as presented against the background of a fierce communist regime.

Metadiscourse Markers in Technical Texts

The aim of this research is to analyse metadiscourse marker usage in English texts of various areas (Informatics, Energy and Civil Engineering) in pursuance to reveal the aspects of metadiscourse usage. This research is aimed to determine if metadiscourse markers are a frequent occurence in technical language and what category markers can be found in such texts. This study also pursues to define usage peculiarities of interdisciplinary metadiscourse markers. The usage of markers of interactive and interactional categories is analysed. Employing descriptive and comparative research methods and qualitative calculations it was determined that the usage of interactive category markers dominates in all researched technical areas. It was noted that such texts are characterised by visual means, consequently it explains the usage abundance of endophoric markers and code glosses as the author seeks to ensure that the information provided is properly interpreted. The analysis of interactional category markers indicated that technical texts are not so objective as they were considered to be, i.e. the expression of the author‘s attitude and emphatic evaluation can be envisaged. It was observed that the area of Civil Engineering was the most objective and least personalised, the field of Informatics distinguishes by the abundance of code glosses and hedging markers whereas the sphere of Energy stands out by examples of all categories of metadiscourse markers.

Uczucie świadczące o naszej niedoskonałości, czyli wstyd w definicjach studentów lubelskich

The aim of this paper is to analyse the definitions of the word wstyd ‘shame, embarrassment’ formulated by the students of the Faculty of Humanities at Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin (overall, one hundred and fifty people). Before the analysis is undertaken, the author refers to what is known about this complex and equivocal feeling. Most of the students provided open, cognitive definitions of the word, but some of them also gave closed, structural and ostensive definitions. In the majority of the instances, the notion was defined in negative terms, but in a few cases its positive aspects were mentioned. In such cases, wstyd was described as a regulator of behaviour, as a factor which prevents people from acting in socially unacceptable ways. Hence such terms used in its description as a compass or a brake.

An important literature is attached to the Wolof language. This one is not unknown. Wolof tales published in 1921 in Blaise Cendrars’ Anthology of Negro, in Bàmmeelu Kocc Barma by Bubakar Bóris Jóob (2017), have been the subject of several publications on this literature. Some, especially of an ethnological nature, have made French-speaking readers discover the richness of Wolof literature and culture, while others have revealed the many facets of literary creation in this language. Unfortunately, literary works produced in this language have very rarely interested academic criticism. This article attempts to fill this gap by proposing to study the marks of enunciation in the reported discourses and speeches borrowed from the Romanesque production in the Wolof language.

Symbols and Concepts as Instruments of Metaphorical Meaning in Idiomatic Expressions: the Figurative Value of Honey, Fire and Sand in Different Languages

Idiomatic expressions carry metaphorical meaning, which is achieved by means of stylistic and semantic instruments such as symbols and concepts, that are functionally subordinated to the metaphor. This paper emphasizes the difference between the three notions and illustrates the relationship between them, using idiomatic expressions from different languages as examples. The selected expressions are centered on three entities that acquire figurative value – honey, fire and sand, which are analyzed from a comparative point of view, for the purpose of distinguishing symbolic load and conceptual meaning. Another focus is on achieving a multilingual perspective on the realization and perception of metaphorical meaning in idioms.

The present article reports on a case study that focuses, comparatively, on the extent to which Romania’s Prime Minister Adrian Năstase and UK’s Prime Minister Tony Blair reveal their intentions and thoughts in their investment speeches, by the use of the personal pronouns I and we. The number of occurrences of each of the two first person pronouns and the way in which they are used will be considered in an analysis that is both quantitative and qualitative. The overall aim of the comparative approach is to highlight how democracy is seen in the cases scrutinized, based on the activation by the speakers of the principle of cooperation in oral communication.
